The Premier League needs a lot more wins over La Liga competition before they can start claiming to be the best. If it takes mammoth comebacks like these just to barely progress it would stand to reason, logically, that La Liga are still the chased not the chasers. Real Madrid is not going to sit on its laurels for long either.

It was a great win for Liverpool, but the Premier League has a long way to go. Especially teams that are not named Manchester City or Liverpool.

And even City has been a massive disappointment in Europe even with their resurgence domestically this past decade.
I do think there has been something special about that league for a while. You just wouldn't want to look away and miss the action. I have watched plenty of it, even back when Liverpool were dominating. And I do like it. The mentioned intensity is an attraction on its own, even for me who prefers to see quality technique. Current Liverpool are where they are because they have mastered both though, not just the former.

To sum up, I am just not on board with the constant superlative praise towards that league. And now I regret not exaggerating the quality of La Liga back when I had a better chance. Like when Bilbao came to Old Trafford and outplayed the hosts in front of Sir Alex himself. Or all those recent times when Barcelona defeated the English sides, with Leo actually scoring more goals against those top teams than the EPL conqueror Cristiano himself did in all his time there. Yet I never called those moments a reality check for the Englishmen. Maybe I should have, but I guess it's because I never looked at it primarily as comparison and competition between the leagues. After all, the other best representative of Spanish football is the club I wouldn't cheer for even if you offered me the current players' wages.

I have also spent nearly a couple of years in this place reporting our and some other La Liga games, sometimes in detail, week in week out, but nobody cares, mi joven amigo Alexander being the exception. Which is why I am done trying. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the explanation for Liverpool going out tonight because we threw it away, but I am definitely looking forward to that the next time Barcelona succeed in the Champions League, whenever that will be...

La Liga has won the last 5 UCL championships. Premier League still has not secured this one yet. It's going to take more than the results up to this point to convince me Premier League is the best league.

The gap is closing, it would seem. The gap closing to being the best league is quite a large jump, however.

The old powerhouses are going to go strong in the summer spending money though and us too

So we don't know if it's the start of the PL era in Europe

There's a lot more than just La Liga that Premier League teams will have to contend with. Teams like Juventus/PSG will remain a threat. And obviously from La Liga side I do not expect Real Madrid to be down for long.

Long way to go yet for English sides. The tide is finally turning in the other direction. But the last 10 percent or so will be the hardest 10 percent to get.

And like I mentioned up above, teams like Atletico and Sevilla knocking out Premier League teams in the biggest competition. If one wants to argue Premier League has more parity, go ahead. If one wants to argue La Liga is a two headed league, I think you should also probably look at PL as a two headed league as well then...the quality massively drops after Liverpool/City.

Barcelona won 1-0 3-0 3-0 against Premier League teams these past few months. Their 1 loss was just really really bad, and yes did sour their entire season unfortunately.

Play this tie again next week it'll be hotly contested again. So I fail to see how Barcelona is overrated. Like I said after their leg 1 win, if that is overrated sign me up as a United fan. Man I'd love to be overrated making it to the deep stages of Champions league every year and winning my league and other trophies a ton. Sign me up

I could have said salty salty to a Liverpool supporter when they complained after a loss to Real Madrid in the final.

But then again I think I have set my priorities straight. If any Red Devils manage to find some positives in seeing City winning the league again and Liverpool having double amount of CL titles while they are miles away from winning either, then kudos on looking at a glass water drop full I guess...*

I would have loved to reach the CL semis , I wouldn't care at all what the other fans will call us even if we lose like that. 4-3 is competitive

And a 4-0 hammering in that fashion, when it mattered, with 4 key players not being available.. counts as tight? It's strange how these people who were supposedly putting Liverpool on a pedestal and tearing Barcelona down before the tie.. actually ended up being correct  just a coincidence, i'm guessing!

As for Real Madrid smacking Liverpool last season. No. Liverpool came very close and were more than equal to the great Real Madrid side. Karius made two howlers in the final. The Premier League also had 5 teams in the last 16 and were unlucky to have City and Liverpool meet in the quarters, they could well of had half the representatives in the semi finals if one of them didn't have to lose.

I said at the start of the Champions League two years ago that I could sense the tide was turning and the Premier League resurgence was starting. It's been a long road back and there have been milestones on that path, like the 5 teams in the last 16 last season, Liverpool v City in the quarters, a team making the final, City v Spurs this season (it looked like they were playing a different game to the other quarter finalists, with Ajax being an honourable exception), Liverpool now beating Barcelona in the way people said they would, possibly an all English final again tomorrow. Maybe an all English final in the Europa League too.

It's not a knee jerk reaction, it's been coming. All this "extrapolating one result" crap shows is you haven't been paying attention. Didn't see it coming, then when it happened it's still not sinking in.

September 27th 2017

I will add you took my extrapolation comment a bit too literally. All I meant by it is it's one result. There have been other results to help legitimize the claim that the Premier League is on its way to becoming the best, but there need to be more. That's all I'm saying. We can't jump the shark and put them at #1. Not yet. That to me is just too disrespectful to the mass amount of accomplishments La Liga sides have been earning for quite a long time now. It's not about being blind or not expecting it. It's about wanting to see more results than the ones up to this point. There has been a long period of time where La Liga teams have routinely and easily beaten English sides. For them to claim the title of best, they need to start doing that to La Liga sides. Consistently.

Thanks to Federer and Del Potro, and my congratulations to all the fans of the Reds and my commiserations to Tiki - Taka and the Barca fans but the Klopp team has shown a strength of immeasurable character, a privileged physical state and have shown once again that in football there are no impossible.

The way you can tell where the game has shifted is to see where Real Madrid go to try and bridge the gap. When Germany had two sides in the final? Sign Khedira, Ozil and Kroos.

When English sides were on top in the late 2000’s? Get Robben, Modric, Alonso, Ronaldo.

Who are they after now? Pogba, Mane and Hazard.

I love reading your recaps! Extended highlights are the best we get over here. They’re pretty good, they don’t manage to convey the same message though. Feels like I’m sitting in Parc Guell with a cafe bombon reading the morning edition of Sport ;)

I think tonight will be good for Barcelona, personally. I said they would be shocked, and you could see on their faces they were. They’ve had it relatively easy, but today they met a buzz saw and got chewed up. They’ve been here before though, the first meeting with Chelsea in 04 springs to mind. They found a way to get their heads around it though. Last year against Roma was disappointing, but this year they just weren’t prepared for the onslaught, it’s not that they aren’t good enough.

Taking a dump on Barcelona? As I said, people really haven't been paying attention..

Liverpool were the better side in the first half last week and they destroyed Barcelona tonight, whilst missing 3 key players and had Robertson kicked out of the game.. in exactly the way it was pretty obvious they would. Harried, pressed, couldn't handle the pace of the game etc..

It's not a knock on Barcelona, i'm pretty sure they would be as good/if not better than Liverpool if they had to play against Premier League sides every week. The point I made in the quarters was Barcelona or Juventus wouldn't be able to cope with the English sides. We didn't get to see Juventus, but the 180 minutes of the Liverpool/Barcelona semi showed that to be the case.
I just didn't approve your general tone. Had Liverpool ran over Barcelona in both legs and won convincingly like you said before the tie began, I would have said well done.

However, saying "shocked by this result?" when Liverpool needed a miracle comeback to go through and saying they handled Barcelona convincingly over the two legs when, again, they needed a miracle comeback to go through... It just came across as a bit smug. I know you're not that way, but it's not how I saw the tie myself. Personally, I don't think they were well head and shoulders above Barcelona when all 180 minutes are considered. But, they definitely deserve a place in the final.

Also one last thing @Feña14 that I should clarify- when I said taking a dump on Barcelona I didn't mean you. I meant the general sporting public (social media), and a couple of comments in this thread calling Barcelona overrated. And the constant attacks I see on La Liga. If that is how some people are defining overrated, I quickly wish United would elevate themselves to that standard. Barcelona was categorically dreadful today, and deserve to be criticized for it. But I also think it will be prone to overreaction as well. It was, after all, still just one creative Barcelona play and finish away from them still progressing. So in that sense, it was a hotly contested tie.

Wanted to reiterate that.

I was shocked by today. And that's a credit to Barcelona and the aura they have created for themselves. So If I am a footballing dolt for being shocked by today, then I am a footballing dolt. I cannot pretend today did not stun me.

I feel like on this message board, it's easy for all of us (not singling anyone out) to get enamored with our predictions, especially if they are bold ones that turn out to be correct. I've fallen victim to it myself.

But would anyone here have bet significant money on a Liverpool progression into the final, given the 0-3 deficit? I'd be willing to bet no, they wouldn't have. Our opinions on here are free so we are allowed to be bold.

Oh yeah, not knocking Barcelona at all. They just weren’t equipped to handle Liverpool. They’ll be better off for it down the line, they’ve experienced what they’re up against now. They’ve been through it before and it ended with them going on to win multiple Champions League titles. It was just pretty obvious to me that they’ve not faced a side who plays like Chelsea did when they struggled against them, coupled with highly skilled players like Salah, Mane, Firmino etc.. it was a recipe for disaster for Barcelona, that’s all.

As for betting? After the first leg I’d still of bet good money on Liverpool doing it. When there was no Firmino, Salah or Keita I wouldn’t of bet on it though. Turns out I needn’t of worried.

Btw Reliable sources from Madrid say Hazard will be announced after the CL Final and the transfer sum will be 130m

I can believe that, it’s the worst kept secret in football at this stage. I don’t think the price will be that high. I’d guess around the £90 Million mark.

It’ll be his last game at Stamford Bridge tomorrow night, so I’m sure he’ll get a great send off. Whatever the result.

That and clean sheeting Barca seemed like too big of an ask, even for them at home. But they did it. Credit to them. Now we see if they can finish the job. I think he should go, already wasn't thrilled when he extended the contract for another year a few months back.

I'd say last season was forgivable, as it was his first with a European giant, and we didn't have as much depth as this year so a spring burnout was at least a bit understandable.

Now, the conditions for more success were clearly better but it ended up being an even bigger failure. Not saying Liverpool are worse than Roma, quite the opposite, but having won by the same margin while protecting the net at home too, and also generally playing better than last season, this result was even worse. The team used to be better, but it's his set up that has distanced us from those desired performances as well. Some of the past managers wouldn't have allowed that.

Leo's effort and contribution this season has been absolutely incredible, yet it didn't result in anything when it comes to Europe. The club really need to make the most of this period while he is still capable of playing at his current level.

So Dembele wasn't injury prone at Rennes or Dortmund until his 120m move to Barcelona. Neymar has lost more games due to injury in his 2 seasons with us than in his 4 seasons at Barcelona , He costed us 222m only transfer. Coutinho has proved to not be useful enough for Barcelona despite costing 140m. Mbappé has been good and not injury prone , Definitely the most succesful Big signing of the 2017/18 season. I think there will be some sort of surprise. Not saying Liverpool will win it though, they could be the one who drops points. Wolves are a good side, hard to beat, Liverpool have injuries, maybe a hangover from today etc.. or maybe it’s City who will slip up, they’ve been winning ugly of late. Maybe their luck runs out?

After the crazy season we’ve had, something tells me both sides winning and everything going as it should doesn’t quite feel right.

Sucks that we don't get the Spanish football any more. That and tennis being off sky is lame. Trying to find streams for tennis tournaments. Don't mean to be all anti lady but a lot of the wta tournaments are on bt sports.

But who will replace Valverde?

Always enjoy reading about LaLiga and Barcelona from you.
Well, Xavi is retiring and intends to start managing straight away... :p

Maybe I'd call Koeman if he is not attached long term to the Dutch national team... I have no clue. If we ever get linked to Mourinho though, I will protect Valverde. :X3:
Haha, he did indeed! If I didn’t check the thread for a day I’d have 5 pages to read through :p but yes, don’t think your recaps aren’t read or appreciated. You don’t have to do them for every game if you don’t want to, but it’s good to check in with how they’re getting on. If they stop completely my only Barcelona fan reaction will be limited to screaming 13 year olds from Nottingham on FIFA 19.. not quite the same ;)
I will stick around but since I won't be going to games often anymore, the frequency of the recaps will drop too.

You have my support regarding the Fifa games against that bunch. ;)

Yeah all the La Liga games here are outside of my standard cable package. I have to find streams even for El Clasico. So that sucks.

I read all the recaps even if I don't respond.

And I want to apologize for some of my behaviour tonight. It sucks when blood sugar is heading low and I'm on the computer like a maniac. No way to control myself.

I don't class Tiki-Taka as salty. One of the best posters I've ever posted with.

Do you need some of my sweetarts? They only had the chewy kind. Massive disappointment

Better to ignore rather than apologise to a guy who is drinking while in poor mood. :pIt's all good.

Our league's YouTube channel also used to upload better content. The resumen(highlights) nowadays are very short. Like what the tennis Slams' official channels are doing now. You don't see much, you don't know if you missed much.

Yeah, not sure what their fascination with WTA is. Even tonight I put BT Sport 1 on for Liverpool v Barcelona and they were showing WTA! They relegated the Champions League semi to BT Sport 2

I tried to watch some ATP on Amazon, but it was quite laggy and fast forward kept crashing the app so I gave up. I think there is some La Liga occasionally on ITV 4, but it’s usually last minute and not really advertised. I think a decent highlights show would be enough, personally. Like Revista on Sky or Football Italia, Channel 4 in the 90’s style!

Oh and go get yourself a Snickers, you’re not yourself when you’re hungry ;)

I am a big Real Madrid fan. On a day like this, I would typically go on a forum and troll a little bit any Barcelona supporters. But not this day.

It really is a sad for Barcelona supporters. And Messi. Too bad CL finished like this for him because he had a phenomenal year and I am not sure how many years of this high performance we can expect from him.

I've been thinking this for ages but UEFAlona have been straight trash in UCL away games ever since Ronaldinho left.

Farcelona were garbage defensively but didn't pay for if in the first leg but they sure did yesterday.

That's what you get for playing defenders who move like cows and can't read the game at CB and wingers/midfielders as fullbacks.

But I'm not complaining.
