Real narrowly avoided defeat at home against Brugge, after trailing by two goals at halftime. Shame, would have been nice seeing them panic this early in the season. Though I imagine they will play well in domestic games. Zidane always valued La Liga highly.

Bayern really didn't hold back today. Seven goals in London. :oops:

Positive news. Leo is included in the squad for tomorrow's game against Inter. It's still unknown if he will start or not, but it's good to have him back among the options. About time the team starts playing quicker and more smoothly again. And on an individual milestone note, that Pele record goal tally for a single club must fall soon... :p

So much for England catching up to the rest of the world lol. Only reason Tottenham made it so far last year was a cushy draw and constant escape thanks to away goals rule.

Liverpool can take anyone on but that’s it. City always capitulate in UCL.

Get over the away goals rule already, it wasn't invented this year. :D I am more upset that even VAR didn't spot one of their handball goals at Etihad. And they had Dortmund, City and Ajax, not exactly what I would call cushy.

I can see a few players jumping ship from this Tottenham project if they finish outside Top 4 and sack Poch. I would love to have Son , But that’s very unlikely

Dortmund and Ajax compared to PSG Barca Real Madrid of years past and Bayern is not as difficult. City is also not as scary in UCL as they are in England plus they were heavily injured at the time. Dortmund pretty routinely gets smacked up by teams at or above their level. Ajax was pretty good but choked nonetheless.

Away goals rule is just built in to help the underdog. Memechester doesn’t beat PSG without it. It’s just a lame rule. It not being new doesn’t make it any less lame. All it encourages is paltry defensive play hoping that 2 or 3 counter attacks in 90 minutes yield a goal. Yawn it’s like watching Mou’s Chelsea again.

Look at how Tottenham fared once they had to play in a game they actually had to score in without overweighted goals :-D . Couldn’t score once in the final.

One can certainly argue over whether the rule should be there or not but can’t argue whether or not Tottenham directly benefitted from it - advanced to the final on two ties being tied on aggregate. I highly doubt without that rule they beat City or Ajax in extra time.

Does anyone actually think they were the 2nd best team in the world last year? No. And usually Champions League does a good job of showing who the best teams are in spite of the underdog rule boost.

Last year to me was a bit of an anomaly - as I feel will be proven this year. It’s Liverpool and City carrying England. No different from the years Barca and Real carried Spain. The teams below those two are good to mediocre to downright atrocious relative to the rest of the world.

The only improvement England has seen is Liverpool ascension. Tottenham was punching above its weight class last year.

Yeah I saw that , It was pretty funny. Reminds me of the times Nadal got his Richard Mille stolen. The kid did a stupid mistake , Now he’s going to Paris FC who plays in the 2nd division and collapsed this season and it’s heading to the 3rd. Meanwhile Nize has a project going on to reach CL and contest for the title at some point with their new owner the richest guy in Britain

Yes, but how often someone went through such teams in succession to get to the final? Real last year, ourselves in 2015... We were likely to get something fresh this year the way the CL went with Real, PSG and Juve going out a bit earlier than expected. Then Barca put the cherry on top with that shocking collapse. And these campaigns with surprise contestants going far used to be far more regular back in the day.

The rule used to be there back when it was a very even playing field across leagues, as well as the European Cup, when in plenty of situations teams didn't use to be favorites at any ground except their own. When anybody could beat anybody at their stadium. Exaggerating a bit but you get what I am saying. Which is why even scoring as a guest was a big deal. And the away goals rule encouraged going for it. If anything, the finals can become even more dull cautious contests because any mistakes are far more costly.

It helps the underdog... If the underdog scores more away goals. :D Manchester did that against Paris, but plenty of ties happened where the favorite got through that way. Both them and the underdogs have the same amount of time to get more away goals in case of having to break an even tie (which is why I wouldn't mind the away goals being removed in extra time). Anyway, I don't see why would that even be a bad thing "helping" the underdog. Especially in today's modern football where the top teams have established themselves there a while ago. And whenever the underdogs punch above their weight, the big boys go buying from them. Do they need even more favors? I don't think they do.

Well that was my main point. If those teams don’t go out that early I’m not convinced Tottenham makes final. Credit to them for making it it’s a good achievement but I certainly never saw them as a top 2 or even 4 team in the world last year. I need to see much more from England to say they’ve caught up. Embarrassing losses like today certainly don’t help.

I also find it a bit weird it goes two game ties to a one game final. You play by the away goals rule in every game except the biggest one. Idk the rules have always been bizarre to me.

I’ll never be a fan of the away goals rule but I know plenty like it.

As far as parity goes I think that ship has long sailed. Money is the name of the game and small clubs will continue to be gutted by teams with big bank accounts. So yeah.. maybe an underdog rule is good. Who knows. To me it feels unnatural but that’s just my opinion.

Leagues give a bigger picture since there are so many more games. Champions League is about timing of form. Real got away with it recently, even when they were 3rd in Spain a couple of times, they were officially the best in Europe. I don't think England are top of the world like they used to be a while ago either, I remember all of them narrowly got through to the European finals. But they are definitely in a better state now than 3-5 years ago.

There is that one competition where every round is a one game. Though I imagine that helps the guppies underdogs even more.

I think it's all the potential drama and thrill of it changing from one team's favor to another with just one goal. Like a buzzer beater when you are a point down in basketball. Without the away goals there has to be a dead even score before swinging the tie in your favor. Plus my first European Cup memories featured a few ties that Barca won on away goals. Most notably the season when the club won it the first time, when in one of the knockout rounds, we scored a last minute away goal to go through. Still one of my all time favorites, Bakero against Kaiserslautern. Without it, the story of The Dream Team may have never happened in all its glory.


So while I try to see the positives of it from a neutral point of view, I definitely have my personal motives defending that particular rule.

Good for Lyon +3. Sad for Lille losing against Chelsea , I think they should have been able to draw , But it is what it is. Sad for Salzburg too , But there's still a chance to pass to the next round

Really liked watching Lille, they've got some seriously good young talent. Between Lille, Chelsea and Ajax, it's probably the most entertaining group for any neutrals.

Chelsea thoroughly deserved the win though imo, an excellent away performance in Europe. The key was Lampard's tactics, Lille took 30 minutes to get to grips with the 3-4-2-1 formation in the first half. Then the switch to 4-4-2 midway through the second half had Chelsea in control for the last 30 minutes.

It's crazy seeing the improvements from game to game. Tomori is starting to look like a young Rio Ferdinand, Lampard is growing with every game, James as a 19 year old looks like the strongest player on the pitch, 18 year old CHO, threw the Lille defender to the floor mid-dribble before crossing for the Willian winner.

There are still things to work on, stop the 2-3 silly little mistakes every game. Get to grips with set-pieces etc.. It will come though.

The team was in danger of facing the same pressure like Real Madrid after two group games. But El Pistolero delivered tonight!

Fun game, with Inter showing how much they have progressed under Conte in a short period of time. Better team in the first half, with such organized defending while applying occasional high pressure throughout the whole match. Not the main contenders yet probably, but they are going in the right direction right now.

Still annoyed as usual that many really up their aggression against Barca while the refs allow that on a regular basis. Of the three yellow cards they received, two weren't even on the pitch. Alexis and Conte were talking too much. Meanwhile Pique got booked for a clean challenge on the ball. Even as a guy who hates diving I have started reacting negatively towards the ref after Suarez's signature falls. Can't draw attention to their awful and double standards anymore. Signore Collina, football misses you badly.

Griezmann had a quiet night and is still adapting, and it doesn't help that he is mostly on the left wing these days. Dembele made the game more lively after replacing him. And so did Vidal with his exceptional work rate after replacing Busquets, who sadly is not even a shadow of the best defensive midfielder he used to be. Leo didn't have many opportunities but that was also down to him dropping to a playmaker role. He had some good passes and magical dribbles as usual, most notably escaping Asamoah in the build up to the winning goal.

Suarez's goals tonight were football art, just like so many of the 400+ he has scored over the years. Volley outside the area for the equalizer, and a late winning goal was even better. Amazing first touch got him away from Godin and placed him one on one with Handanovic, with other two defenders desperately trying to close him down, but that one touch was too good for anyone to intervene in time. One of the best and most entertaining footballers the club has witnessed, and with consistency thrown in there, it's no wonder that he is only three goals away from becoming Barcelona's fourth best goalscorer, just under five years since making his debut.

Simple finish sealed a 2-1 victory, and it's now much easier to breathe regarding the group standings. Two games with Slavia Prague coming up while Inter and Dortmund will clash between themselves a couple of times, it presents a good opportunity to seal progress to the knockouts.

Good luck to Inter on Sunday in Derby d'Italia. I hope they win it and make this Calcio season interesting.

As for us, we have a big La Liga game coming on the same day. Playing Sevilla at Camp Nou before the international break. Pique, who was decent against Inter, will be most likely accompanied by Todibo in defense since Lenglet is suspended while Umtiti is still out. However there is a positive of Messi finally playing a full game this season, looking ready to lead the Blaugrana again. Hopefully Sunday will see the team get a third straight win in La Liga and Leo getting off the mark for the season playing against his favorite opponents, kick starting better days for Barcelona...

Lampard’s tacticts were on point , I think Lille’s coach Galtier didn’t do bad with his approach to the game from the start to the end. I agree Lille has some good young players , I wouldn’t be surprised if you see some of them becoming world class in the future. Your youth has been so well , I imagine you’re quite proud of that:laughing: , Pulisic fans are complaining about the lack of playtime including saying stuff like Chelsea doesn’t know how to develop talent , But that’s wrong , Almost half of your squad today were young players from the academy.

Oh I’ve no doubt they will, Abraham has rightly had a lot of praise, but the Lille striker looks just as good. Same for the forward who got injured an hour in, I believe he’s already played for France? He looks quality.

Yes it’s quite strange seeing the improvement from game to game. Obviously that won’t continue forever, but it’s so rewarding to witness both young player and young manager improving measurably on such short timescales.
