Sampras is 12yrs macs junior here and good enough to be a pro still, and flat out beating Mac ....and To think that some young fanboys consider Mac to be 'not in the same class' given his vintage? Zero doubt, 1984 Mac would defeat Sampras from any phase in his career.

Both men playing their best tennis Mcenroe has zero chance of winning. Sampras had the best serve of all time, huge forehand, better backhand and was quicker around the court. Sampras would simply over power him like he did everyone else he played in his era which was a much higher level than the early 80's.

Stratisfied Yet mac has beaten Sampras on the senior tour being 12years older lol. You see, your statement doesn't make sense. The problem with the Sampras legacy is that he defeated complete mediocrity in most...10 or 11 of his slam wins. Sampras won his slams by defeating Cedric Pioline, Todd Martin, Goran Ivanisevic, Michael Chang, Carlos Moyà, Cedric Pioline again, Goran Ivanisivec again, Patric Rafter, Jim Courier. The only players of note that Sampras beat in GS finals were Agassi and Becker who was past his best. Sampras was thrashed in US open finals by second rate players such as Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin. Edberg also hammered Sampras. Don't tell me mac couldn't handle Sampras lol!!! Sampras wins 3-4 slams in Mac's era.

LOL! Lets see fanboys refute this proof of the weak era of the 90s!

I see no proof. I only see a youtube clown being a wikipedia warrior.

I see no refutation!

The point is clear. Sampras was in a generation of clowns, bozos, and claycourters making hard and grass court finals. He was taken for a walk by teenagers who were Rogi's puppies in their primes.

LOL!!!

I like to set a baseline that every era is just as good as another- that it's not the rest of the field that got weak, but rather that one player rose above the rest. More or less, of course, since there are fluctuations. But as a baseline, we should assume that the ATP 10-100 all have about the same skill. From there, my own system is long winded and I fear I'd lose you.

To simplify, let's use numbers.

McEnroe career: 19-33 (14 years), 81.55% win rate in slams. 81.55% win rate overall.
Sampras: 17-31 (14 years), 84% win rate in slams. 77% win rate overall.

They seem pretty similar. I'd say neither would steamroll the other.

Nice comparison. Lets try my way.

McEnroe played: Borg, Connors, Lendl, Gerulitas, and Lewis to win his 7 majors. Only one clown. And he beat BORG 3 out of 4 times in Grand Slam finals. 3 all time GOATS that he had wins against to get his titles.

By comparison, Sampras won his slams by playing pigeon Methassi (lol) French Open champion Courier at Wimbledon (LOL), Clay court specialist Pioline twice on fast courts (LOL!!) washed up Becker (LOL!!!), French Open champ Chang at the Us Open (LMAO), funnyman Moya, serve bot Karlovic 0.5 and the Joke down under, Rafter. The three times he played champions suited to the surfaces he played them, he got bludgeoned twice (by Oldberg and Methassi) and barely held his own against a washed up Becker.

I'm not even mentioning the humiliating losses to Hewitt and Safin

Is this satire? or just st00pid?

Nobody thinks Sampras of the noughties was the same as 90's Sampras. Before the 02 US, he was close to 50% for the year. It's not like he was consistently getting to finals and losing to top players. Roger's gran took him to a decider. She just couldn't break him that crucial 10th time when it mattered.

This is like stabbing yourself in the chest in the hope the tip breaks through your back and nicks the guy behind you, no?
