The X-Men!

Making a Monfils Rebel out of his old Prestige Spec.
4rygpw.png

Someone should try this

So thats 5 points HL? How do you think I should do this with 18 grams of lead tape?

By doing exactly that... I put it in the conversion table as a strung Rebel to Monfils exact spec.

Yeah I get that, I'm saying I only have 18 grams to work with at the moment, so to mirror those specs as closely as possible with 18 grams how would you suggest I set it up. I can figure it out with a calculator i guess.

How exactly would I go about placing lead at 3 & 9 on my Rebel?

I have my Rebel weighted with about 12g of lead at 3 & 9 with no problems using 1/4 inch tape as long as you start it on the edge of the frame. There is a miniscule overlap but you cant even see it.

chaddles and lefty,

Re Graphite 100... yes, well put, guys!... especially this: I still have never hit with this rack... tbh the 100 head-size isn't really my thing (unless maybe it's one of those frames where the h/size seems somehow smaller?)... one day maybe?...

skyzoo,

Okaaay, I see now!... I getcha! ... Very, very interesting... so to a customization dumb-dumb like me ( ), how much lead (broadly speaking) and to which locations exactly are we talking to get a frame close to Gael's?... btw, I sincerely hope that you are indeed carrying out this experiment yourself?!

Calling all X-Men!

I no longer play with the Reb, but does anyone who does fancy running this club/thread? All you'd have to do is go back a few pages, cut and paste the membership, make a note of ppl who asked to join and add them to the list, etc... anyone? Failing that, I don't suppose it really matters if anyone 'runs' it, as long as you Reb fans keep posting!...

R.

I am not usually a big fan of the 100 head size - I have been mainly playing with BLX90 , but the Graphite 100 does some awesome things indeed that makes you want to keep on hitting with it.

I'm about to use all 18g's on this Rebel demo and try it out later tonight. What you guys think I should do? Link to the conversion table?

3.5g @ .8-1in above handle.

11g @ 10 & 2

Have a little left over....want to wait to get a correct read out for what its at right now before I add any more to it.

Will be very interested to hear how you find the above experiment goes. I could never wield such a beast I'm sure... (for example, for me, the PT630 and RD7 are just beyond a heft I'm comfortable swinging for 3 sets)... actually I wanted to do something very similar (ie, try out a Monfils-esque custom job), albeit on a Prestige mid... anyhow, do give us some feedback on your impressions.

ATB,

R.

Well not to be cocky but I'm 6'5 235lbs and I played football, baseball, basketball and tennis in high school and probably could have played football in college so I think I should be ok with it.

yeah it didnt really work out, I could weild it for sure but the extra weight at 10 and 2 just sent everything sailing. With it strung with alu power at 64lbs like Monfils it could maybe work out but it just doesnt have nearly the spin potential of the 200 Tour I am demoing, granted each are strung with syn gut at mid tension.

What are your views on the EX03 Graphite 93?

I went in to a sports shop the other day, and they were selling them for £49 each.

Does the low price indicate they're not actually that good, or could it be the deal of the century?

EXO3 Graphite 100(string port inserts/Luxilon BB ALu Power/Prince Syn Gut Hybrid at 58 Lbs)

When I first bought this racket (used) off the TW forums it had a "hybrid" grommet setup - string hole (12 o'clock-6 o'clock)/ ports hole (3 o'clock-9 o'clock). I thought this was the default setup. I had it strung with OG micro and it didn't feel as muted as I thought it would be. Then I found out that the person I bought the racket from also sent a full string hole grommet set. So I decided to use those and get the racket restrung with my current string setup. With the string hole setup I get that classic feedback which I was used to (POG OS).

Question to everyone... has anyone tried this "hybrid" setup.. or do you prefer string hole? or port hole setup?

I just got another one of these rackets and it only has the port holes. I'm thinking of using the current string setup with the port holes. I know with the port holes i'm going to get a bigger sweetspot at expense of some feedback.

Thanks for any feedback.

Hopin you Rebel users can answer a question for me. I currently use both the MG Rad MP, and also the BLX Tour 90. I like the control the 18x20 gives me, but I'm hopin you guys can give me honest feedback on how the power level of the rebel 95 (regular) compares to the BLX tour 90 power, assuming both are strung with the same string at mid tension.

I've demoed the rebel before, and I enjoyed the buttery feel that it has.. but my recollections are now so dim that I can't be sure if its more or less powerful than the BLX 90. thank you!

less power on rebel, unless your racket head speed suffers from BLX90's weight, in which case rebel would be more power for you.

Made the switch from the dark side...Now playing 2x Rebel 95's w/ 10g of lead spread from 3-12-9 (thanks Anton for that great setup) strung with Soilico Revolution 17g @57/ PSG w/ Duraflex 17g @61.

I was going to bump this, but I figured there's already a large EXO3 bromance-fest around here already. It's funny to think that I used to keep the members' list updated when I played my Rebel Teams, and now I'm back-only with Tours and Rebels.

I hit my Rebel today completely stock w/port grommets, and I must say I enjoy the Tour more. The Reb is so solid everywhere, but my spinny pusher game is much more suited to the Tour. Thankfully, though, I'm a much more aggressive doubles player, so the Rebels will be my doubles sticks. I'll report back on my thoughts with the Reb strung with Beast XP 16@45 and string hole grommets tomorrow-cheers!

Anyone else itching to check out the new Reb? I've moved away from closed pattern, smaller head frames, but... hmmm, some things you just have to try in life eh?!:)

Nice to see this old thread resurrected BTW.

I'm back with the Tour 100 18x20's. When the new Rebel 98 comes out I will definitely have to give it a hit (crap, here I go again)! I really liked the Tour Team as well the other night (might have to pick one up to toy with). Oh Brother......

Don't suppose any difference in power here between them? How else are they different~?

In the spirit of the churning Rebel discussion, I'd thought I'd post a mini-review of this stick. I playtested two racquets-one with Beast XP 16 @45lbs, and the other with PSGD 16 at an unknown tension (I'm guessing around 55lbs). Both racquets were strung with hole grommets and had a Touna Grip+Prince Tour Dampener to complete the setup.

POSITIVES:
  • Solid, controlled feel.
  • "Sweet" swinging frame.
  • Good at producing and returning low balls, whether slice or flat.
  • Crisp volleys that could be punched deep or feathered short.

NEGATIVES:

  • Low topspin potential compared to the Tour (and spin is a huge part of my game, so this is a pretty big issue for me. Hopefully it can be resolved with some Tour Bite 17).
  • Smaller head and denser pattern were less forgiving on mishits.

With full poly:

This setup was an interesting hit. The stringbed itself felt stiff, but the overall feel didn't, if that makes sense. I guess another way to describe it would be to say that the flex of the racquet combated the stiffness of the strings.

This led to a slightly disconnected feel on groundies-I never felt exactly dialed in with this setup. It hit a heavy, deep ball, but I didn't exactly click with the setup. However, this frame seems to swing itself once you get it moving. Strokes are smooth and clean, and the feel at impact is still very solid. I was also able to flatten out my shots a little bit more, which is something I've always struggled with. Volleys, too, are crisp and controlled, and seem to go just about anywhere they're needed to go.

With full syn gut:

Surprisingly, I liked this setup better. It didn't have the rough, planky feel of the full poly, and spin potential was about the same. That being said, the racquet's qualities didn't really change with the different setups, save for the feel. The response was much cleaner and cushioned, which is one of my favorite qualities of my Tours. Also, I was able to actually produce a flat shot when I wanted to, which is a nagging problem for me. I could really crack my hitting partner a good one when the opportunity presented itself.

Another interesting note about this racquet is that it handles low balls -very- well. Slices skidded low through the court, which is something I've found to happen when using tighter-patterned sticks. And while I never would have guessed it, this racquet responded very well to "flick" shots. If I had to scoop out a very low ball on my forehand, I could snap the ball over the net with a wave of my wrist. This was also true on defensive balls, where I could stretch out and tap the ball back with impunity from punishment.

On the negative side, though, I kept dumping balls into the net with this frame. I normally use a 17g poly in my super-open Tours, and the transition to a thicker string in a denser pattern was tough. I did lose a good bit of spin, which is a big part of my game, and consistency did drop. However, with some more hitting, I'm positive that I can dial myself in with this racquet-it truly is a sweet frame.

I was wondering if anyone here has any good suggestions for customizing the rebel. I just got some led tape and wanted to experiment a little bit, but I was curious as to what some other rebel users have already done. Thanks.

I'm still tinkering with the 2012 model. So far, I matched all the frames, then added 5 inch strips to 3/9. Then, I centered 3 inch strips on top of that.

I'm thinking of doing a little more under the grip to being the balance point a little lower.

Could you post your specs Mitchmann for the racquets. I would personally like to know what they started as and what you have made them.

I don't remember they exact specs they started at, but all 4 were slightly different. The lightest of the 4 was 324 grams, and the heaviest was 327 grams. In order to match balance, I had to add some lead to either the top of the hoop or bottom of the handle (and sometimes both).

Now, my latest tinkering is at 342 grams unstrung with an overgrip (and string holes inserts). Aside from matching the others, this one has 5 inch strips underneath 3 inch strips at 3/9. I'm considering adding a little more underneath the grip to bring the balance point closer to my hand.

Would you mind posting pictures of your string hole inserts. I am looking for the one's that are supposed to be made for the 2012. Did you get new ones or use the one's fitted for the older model.

What do you need to see in the pics? They are for the 2012 frame (gun metal grey inserts...slightly larger holes than previous model).

Currently up to 7 Rebels, when the new ones came out and the price dropped I got 4 more, Been 2-3 years and I still love this frame.

So I tried out my latest adjustments today (very briefly, as I was mostly feeding). I added 4 grams of lead just above the buttcap, and installed the string hole grommets...

I loved it. Can't wait to hit some more tomorrow.

I am loving the new rebel. The flex is something special and is destined to be a classic.

I recently put on a Fairway leather grip, and string grommets. String grommets really make a difference.

I'm with you. Now that I have all my adjusts to the frame finalized, I'm really enjoying it. I have to say that I'm hitting the ball harder than I ever have.

I'm the proud new owner of a Rebel 98 - been playing with it for a couple weeks now, and loving it more and more. Never tried the original standard rebel, but the specs of the 98 are great for me. Tried the rebel team and liked that as well. The Rebels are amazing racquets, as well as the new warrior and of course the exo3 tours - to me the rebel 98 seems to a good combination of them all. Regardless, I'm glad to be x-man!!!

@themitchmann, Arthuro:
what's the difference between port and string grommets? i demo'd a new rebel 95 and liked it more than i thought i would

The ports soften up the string bed. Lots of ball pocketing it makes the ball feel like it is sucked up by the string bed. The string holes make the string bed a little stiffer and livelier.
