don't have things on top of my head, but 7 former champs at a slam is not that high a #, pretty sure that you could get more instance of 7 or more.

Off the top of my head, it looks like it could be. There were 6 US Open champions in the 1992 US Open draw with Edberg, Sampras, Becker, Lendl, McEnroe and Connors. Wilander was on hiatus. That's the next most I can think of.

The US Open had that period from 1974-1984 when only left-handed players won the men's singles, with Connors 5 times, McEnroe 4 times, Vilas and Orantes. After 1984, it was then Lendl 3 years in a row. There weren't that many one-off winners. In the 1990s, you had Sampras winning 4, Agassi 2 and Rafter 2. In the 2002 US Open, there was only Hewitt, Safin, Sampras and Agassi, with Rafter having retired. In 2005, there was Federer, Hewitt, Roddick, Agassi and Safin.

Early this decade we were talking about how the big 4 had a stranglehold on everything. How the tables have turned

Have they? The big 4 have won every Wimbledon since 2003, have won 13 out of 14 French Opens since 2005, have won 13 out of 15 Australian Opens since 2004, and have won 12 out of 15 US Opens since 2004. Of the 6 tournaments mentioned here not won by the big 4, Wawrinka won 3 of them. The others are Safin (2005 Australian Open), del Potro (2009 US Open) and Cilic (2014 US Open ). Complete domination by the big 4.

Since one of the big 4 first won a major at 2003 Wimbledon, the big 4 have won 53 out of 61 majors. Extraordinary domination.

There's a difference between losing 1 Slam in a 8year span (05RG-13USO) and losing 4 in 5 years (14-18)
