Thiem 2020 similar to Rafa 2008?

Ombelibable

New User
Theim in the last two years, has been the Roland Garros finalist. In 2018, he lost convincingly, in 2019 he did one better. In 2017 and 18 he was the only player to beat Rafa on clay (he beat him in 2019 too).

2006, Rafa was outplayed in Wimbledon Final. 2007, he came close. He had had Roger's number outside Wimbledon anyway.

In 2008, Rafa finally dethroned Roger at Wimbledon. Can Thiem dethrone Rafa at Roland Garros 2020? Imagine rain delays, and the new Roland Garros roof coming into play.

Im a bit deflated on Thiem. Seems he could do more off clay, but maybe his career will follow Rafa's and it takes him a while to "get it" on HC
Funny that he hasn't won a big clay title, but has on hard, despite such a clay-skewed performance at the slams. I suppose clay gets locked down rather a little (still, sadly).

I know it’s in not a popular opinion here but Dominic was closer to Roland Garros title this year than most of you think. He was going toe to toe with Nadal for 2 sets before the fatigue deflated him completly. He played 4 days in a row and eventually got gassed. If not for idiotic scheduling and Novak’s whining in the SF he would have had a very decent chance to take The Bull down. I don’t say he would have won but an epic 5-setter was on the cards.

So I believe next year assuming they meet and come with equal rest time Dominic will have a very good chance to beat Rafa.

He wasn't gassed. He just lost it mentally like he usually does. Do you seriously believe that he could play a great second set and suddenly be gassed in the first game of the third? No, he just got nervous because he won the second set, and that caused him to hit some very silly errors at the beginning of the third. Leave alone the fact that Thiem has only himself to blame for not having more rest. By the level of play he was much better than Djokovic in the semifinals, but he just kept choking again and again. He should have won this match much earlier.

Also, let me remind you that in 2018 they also didn't have equal rest time. Thiem had much more rest during the tournament and a much easier draw. Yet Nadal won in straights.

Thiem was not tired before the RG 2019 final. That is a reasoning some Federer fans/Nadal detractors put in their mind to have hope and convince themselves that Thiem will defeat Nadal next year at RG. Also to decrease value to Nadal's victory. Fact is, Nadal dominates Thiem at RG. Nadal convincingly defeated Thiem at RG 2014, RG 2017 and RG 2018 before, so Nadal defeating Thiem at RG 2019 is just a manifestation of a pattern, rather than of Thiem being "tired". Nadal is simply a better clay player, even in his 30s, that is the reason why he keeps dominating Thiem at RG. RG is also Nadal's favorite clay court, as it is bigger than the courts of Masters 1000 and it allows him to return far and defend better.

Thiem played 3 days in a row before the RG final, yes. But let us examine closer the facts. Thiem easily destroyed in 3 sets Khachanov on Thursday 6, in an extremelly short match. Then he went on to play the semifinal against Djokovic which went to dice sets. But the semifinal was split on two days which helped Thiem to recover. If it is split on 2 days, is like playing two short matches in a row. No way a 25 years old is tired for playing a 3 sets match, plus a SF split on 2 days.

The fact that Thiem decresed his level in the 3th and 4th set, (and even in the 2nd set to a lesser degree) has nothing to do with his previous schedule. Even Nadal decrrased his level after the 1st set. The first set of the RG 2019 final is one of the highest level ever seen on a clay court. Thiem was playing like a robot, reaching all balls and running like a gazelle for every single ball in rallies of 10+ shots. Nadal was also running from all over the court, which also exhausted him. It is humanly impossible for any player to maintain the level of the first throughout the whole match. In the 2nd set not only Thiem, but also Nadal, decrrased their level and played in a more conservative style to recover strength. In the 3th and 4th round they both played with less energy than in the 1st set but Nadal's technicañ skills and shot-making on clay were proved superior in the absence of the stamina that None of them had compared with the 1st set.

The same happened in RG 2017 and RG 2018. Thiem decreased his level in the 3rh set of the RG 2017 semifinal (Nadal begelled him 6-0) yet no one says Thiem was "tired" in 2017. In the RG 2018 final Thiem also decrrased his level in the 2nd and 3th set compared with the 1st one, yet no one says that Thiem was "tired".

Thiem doesn't remind me of Rafa physically, mentally or tactically.
So their career timelines have nothing to do with each other :)

I like Thiemmy, but true. He is more useless against Nadal than many other top clay courters of the past.

HAHAHA!!
Hilarious ! Thiem will win approximately 0 Grand Slams in his career.
Nadal will win close to 30.

Comparing them is an utter joke, may as well compare me to Rafa ffs!!

I feel that Thiem has reached his peak, next year he will decline. I will not be surprised if Thiem loses early at RG 2020 tbh.

I don't know why people even bother discussing it , no one new is getting near RG until 2023 - earliest.

Thiem beat Nadal 4 times on clay though, and only in 2016 it was a really terrible version of Nadal. (even this year in Barcelona Nadal wasn't THAT bad, at least definitely better than in MC and Madrid). Thiem just failed to beat him in RG so far. But next year there will be a roof in RG, it will probably help players like Thiem.

No ONE will be the Nadal of 2008. Maybe EVER. Nadal of 2008 was the best version of the most dominant player on a surface in the history of this sport. What Nadal has done on clay will NEVER be equalled and his personal best in 2008 will NEVER be matched.

Thiem could beat Nadal in 2020 RG for sure. But it will be an epic match, and not in straight sets. No way will Thiem be close to the level that Nadal was on clay in 2008. There was no player who could compete with Nadal in 2008 - or even win sets against him.

Thiem has done worse at RG vs Nadal than other clay courters of the past, despite dealing with an older Nadal. That to me makes him more useless.

So far yes, but Thiem has the game to beat Nadal when he is on. So far his biggest problem was the mentality. But one day he might beat Nadal in RG. (Nadal will be at least 34 when that happens though, far from his prime)

Who did better against Nadal at RG? Thiem or Ferrer? Ferrer in 2014 was up a set and a break against Nadal. Thiem never come that close.

Nadal's prime finished at least 6 years ago. So no one has been able to beat even an aging non-prime Nadal at RG.
If Thiem or someone else beats Nadal at RG, it will be when Nadal will be 34+, as you rightly pointed out. That is ancient in tennis terms.

It's not that unthinkable. When you consider that this year Thiem was much, much closer than the previous meetings, and that was with the handicap of the days less rest. Couple that with the fact that if the roof comes into play it could definitely change things in a massive way, and whether it's Thiem or someone else, you'd have to think that 2020 at Roland Garros, at least on Chatrier, could be very interesting indeed.
