Thiem and Mladenovic split

Relationships between tennis players don't seem to go well. Hewitt and Clijsters, Stan and Donna, all the way back to Jimmy and Chris.

Fred and Mirka beat the trend of course. Not sure if Andre and Steffi count as both retired?

Mirka retired so she could travel with Fed. Agassi and Graf were already retired.

If you are both active players, you are going to be traveling all over the place and more often than not, you aren't going to be in the same places

Unlike Chrissie, Kim and Donna, I don't have the impression Mirka was ever that serious about her tennis career. After she and Roger became an item she wasted no time in dropping it (gave out injury as the excuse but I've never been too convinced).

After Mirka retired, she became Fed's employee - that's why she travelled with him.
Wikipedia: "...a recurring foot injury prevented Vavrinec from progressing further up the rankings, eventually forcing her retirement from competitive tennis in 2002. Following her retirement, she took on the role of Federer's public relations manager, traveling with him on tour."

I guess she must have been serious at one point - didn't she get to about no 70?

But I can see it must be terribly difficult to make these relationships work. The men's and women's tours don't coincide at that many points.

Her Wiki page says she had achieved a career high ranking of #76 in singles in 2001, around about the time she got serious with Fed. She retired soon afterwards.

Almost unheard of for 2 active players to maintain a relationship whilst both are still playing. They usually only work if 1 partner (usually the woman) gives up like Mirka did or if they wait until the end of their careers before getting serious like Steffi and Andre did.

Just have to comment: never seen Timo's dad at an event until this YE. Kiki was tight with Timo's mom.

Not sure what that family dynamics suggests.

She made it to the Switzerland's national representation. Apparently she was more serious than just about every female tennis player in the country. Also, her injuries were well known, so I don't know what is there to be convinced about.

Odd moment to split

Both careers are going better than ever. One would believe they'd be in champagne drinking mood. But perhaps their success is in fact a cause of problems (focus on career on both sides means less time and effort available for each other)

This is no coincidence.

It's not that. Most long-distance relationships between successful people don't last, especially young people. Why should tennis pros be any different?

Graf and Agassi are a very different case. Both in their 30s when they started, one retired straight away.

RF and Mrs Stan-Hater are also very different. She stopped playing very early and become his manager or whatever, started milking the golden goose... Theirs is a lot like a business arrangement...

Serbia, her country of origin, has a million better-looking women. At least.

Thiem can do a lot better, just by coming to the Balkans, let alone if he scans the entire world.

Let's be real. He is young, rich, popular, successful, healthy. He can pick and choose. Mladenovic is the one who got lucky.

Exactly,

among million better looking women (and that is a big thumbs up to Serbia) he could not keep this one ...

Maybe, maybe not ... either way let's see what happens next ...

I do think that she is a good looking woman, smart and accomplished ... and that is just one of "million better looking women" in Sebia, which BTW I think is not very nice to say but ... up to you ...

I never disputed that.

But when it comes to young (and most other) people, physical appearance is no 1.

Human nature. Fighting it is a losing war...
Presumably there was at least some physical attraction for them to have been together in the first place?

Why anyone should be assigned to anyone's league ? She can do better and whatever "better" means to her !

I simply support her and think that she should not be looked at as "Thiem's" former ...

And again, if anyone thinks that there are million better looking women in Serbia and she is million and one on that list ... time to check Google flights ...

While you're checking flights, you might wanna book tickets to Russia, Poland and the Ukraine...

As far as "Thiem's former", I am pretty sure she doesn't mind this.
