Thiem and Zverev will be laughing stocks

For the first time in history two players who made a Major final have probably harmed their reputations.
Today's match was beyond woeful. Zverev served a 68 MPH 2nd serve and a 89 MPH 1st serve in the TB. Club players would do better. Thiem may have served a 42 mph 2nd serve as at one point the speed gun was reading 42 mph.
What positives do either take out of that? Thiem could not win it he had to rely on Zverev choking more than he did.
Federer will win more slams. As will Nadal and Djokovic. They have nothing to fear. This new generation have no mental strength.
Tsitsipas was as bad. Medvedev last year also lost a 5-1 lead to Nadal at WTF. This so called Next Gen is the most mentally soft generation of all time.

It's easy for us to laugh at it from a distance, but there's no way Thiem walks away with anything but positives from this tournament. He can say he managed to win a slam without playing his best tennis and his game held up under intense pressure when his body would not. When he next hits the practice court and starts planning his next slam I promise you he and his team won't be sitting around saying "how do we win this? We only got the USO trophy because Sascha choked. We can't rely on that again.

Not Thiem. Bad final for him but he can come back from this as he did not lose it and has shown he is a stud.

Zverev might not get another chance.

The media will hammer Thiem and Zverev. The Big 3 will now be even harder to beat for this new generation.

Unless thiem had a bad achilles that really affected him his performance was inexcusable. As for Zverev that is the end of him. He is not getting over that.

Hard to believe they were hitting that slow.
Must have been nerves or fatigue (but these are young guys that need to suck it up in a slam Final). Either way that sort of level is inexcusable

Yes, but Thiem did come out with the win. As @MeatTornado said, Thiem will only see the positives. That he is now a slam champ. If anything he sees this as him fighting till the end.

But it does show he is not a factor at the FO.

In his first slam final ever, he had one hand on the trophy. It’ll sting for a while and he might fall into a slump, but in the long term this match will be a big positive for Zverev. He was awesome in the first two sets and next time might be more comfortable as he nears the finish line.

Somebody did as it was on the speed gun. Zverev managed 68 mph and Thiem was choking as badly plus had cramps!
Must have been a malfunction or you read it wrong, the slowest 2nd serve I've ever seen from a Male was Giraldo, who hit a few around 55 mph. I do not remember seeing a pathetic 2nd like that from Thiem during the match. It's probably almost impossible for a pro player to hit that slowly on a 2nd (42 mph), even with nerves.

Zverev is only 23 and played average tennis to make the final and was a couple points away from the win. Thiem has finally made the hurdle. Both positives IMO

Awesome? Thiem could not keep the ball in play 1st two sets or find a 1st serve. Zverev has an appalling FH and 2nd serve and until he sorts those shots out he will.never get close to a slam again

This. Thiem is the real embarrassment here. He is the current gen and has been to finals before. He had to rely on a choking opponent and goofy tournament to win. Zverev is younger and is new to slam finals, and yet he was at the finish line.

Long term, this is worse for Thiem.

Well i grew up with Courier Becker Agassi Sampras Edberg et al. All won Majors before 23. None were serving 89 mph 1st serves!

Why would he read that stuff? And since when has the media been anything but puff pieces?

If he goes on TTW, yeah, that might scar him for life to see the way we talk about him. But the official media is just going to talk about how he gutted his way through a shaky performance.
No. Both will be hammered tomorrow and the Big 3 will be rammed down their throats.

I would say things are looking good for Thiem
While he has beaten them in slams, neither Nadal or Djokovic are going to be exactly quaking in fear that their era may suddenly be about to end after watching that Thiem performance in the final. Nadal and Djokovic probably got confidence that they can dominate for the next 3 years if Thiem is the biggest danger to them.

Well in a few years this could be the future. The Big 3 will leave eventually and I can still see these guys being in line for some majors.

If this is Zverev's only major final appearance or Thiem's only major win, then the negatives of this match might follow them. But if they add to their accopmlishments it will just merge into their success.

I was just amazed how accepting Zverev was of just sending the ball back in much of the 4th and 5th set.

Next 5 years. Federer still their only threat.

His second serve sucks, yes, and he really needs to sort it out. But outside of that he was on point in the first two sets of the final. He was hitting huge off both sides, had a fantastic rhythm on serve, and was gliding up to net and showed some excellent touch and confidence up there. All this in addition to his great back-court movement and defense.

Yes, Thiem was bad at the start, but it’s not like he was spraying every second ball. His main problem early on was not getting first serves in. He had to play so many second serves and Zverev was outmaneuvering him from the baseline. Zverev absolutely looked like a slam champ in those first two sets, even with the second serve issues.

Just the fact that Thiem won this match will help his confidence big time when he's in another AO Final. You have extra nerves when you are slamless.
These are professionals. Not park players. Their level tonight was park level stuff. He will be as nervous against the Big 3 in a Major final as questions will always be raised now.

Fed's not winning anymore 7 best-of-five matches inside 14 days with 2 bum knees at 40.

All these young guys have to do is keep him on the court sufficiently long and his body will give up.

Pushing will do just fine.

No way! Thiem is an amazing athlete who had a subpar first 2 sets but then started to play some great tennis. Zverev had an amazing first 2 sets. My respect for both players has increased tremendously. And hey neither player nailed a line person in the neck with a ball.

You respect pushers? As in the last set they were just pushing the ball back. 89 mph 1st serves!!

Sure, buddy. Thiem wasn't even expected to get anywhere this tournament. After his Cincy disappointment we thought he was just tanking the HC season for clay.
Now he's won the US Open, no matter his playing level. That is nothing but a confidence booster for him to launch a great clay season.

Zverev looked like the future of tennis for real until early in the 3rd set. He played one loose service game and from then on it was a chokefest. Thiem wasn't quite right. Something was a little off whether it was the injury, nerves, fatigue or a combination. I saw a lot of positives for Zverev until old habits kicked back in. Thiem just did his best to survive a bad match. It was a crappy match overall, but some good things to take away as well.

If an average club player had subbed in for one of them in this match, the other one would have won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 against the club player no matter how poorly you think they played.

First off, he will be extremely exhausted. He has ZERO preparation.

And if he plays with that mentality against Rafa or Djoker he will lose in under 90 minutes...

But sure... buddy... He has a shot...

Who will be raising the questions? The media will hype this win up massively, as they should.
Thiem will be more confident now, and he only needed about 5% more confidence in this year's AO Final (he led Djokovic 2-sets-to-1 and lost 6-4 in 5th Set). Very easily done.

I don't think he'll be playing with "that mentality" now that the pressure's off. The only struggle now is physical.
Maybe. But I never thought he had a shot to win both slams. I think he realized he put it all in for this one and is okay not winning the FO this year.

That being said, once he regroups I do think he will have a shot at AO and FO next year.

Theim definitely was off. Watch his first couple sets against Rafa at RG in 2019 or their match at the open in 2018 it looks like a completely different player. There was a rumour circulating that Covid had gotten into the bubble and many players were effected however it was covered up. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but I have to question what I saw today.

AO definitely, since he already led Djokovic 2-set-to-1 in the AO Final.
Long way to go at Roland Garros, as he's only ever taken 1 set from Nadal (and they've played 13 sets) and it was a very difficult set.
The tennis Thiem played today, extremely passive, will not work vs. Nadal at Roland Garros......but it may work vs. Djokovic at the AO, because Djokovic plays passively too.

Yes. But if he can pull off an AO win and have rest and preparation for RG he has a better shot then what he is presented with right now.

People have been spoiled by the big 3 over the last 15 years. Not many other players have had the chance to win during this era so naturally the guys were a little nervous today. Does anybody remember Goran trying to serve it out at Wimbledon 2001. Not easy to win your first slam in a tight 5th set.

I don't think either of these guys are ATGs, but they are obviously NOT jokes either. Too many big wins over top players already.

Now we just need Thiem to take Rafa's scalp at the FO! Then all the Fed fans here will join the Thiem!!!

Zverev still is a joke at slams. Remains zip for top 10 players beaten in slams.

Thiem's been consistently beating Novak and Rafa at slams recently. He'd be the last guy I want to be playing, if I were Nadal or Novak, besides each other.

How about that clutch 132mph first serve down the line while cramping by Thiem. That was the moment for me.
