Thiem: "I have to sacrifice one of the two slams as it looks now"

Aaaaand Nadal confirmed that he will participate in Madrid. There goes my potential Thiemdal US Open match up :(
Rafa hasn't decided yet whether he'll play the US Open or not.
He has to play Madrid regardless of whether he's playing the US Open.
Because Rafa never plays the week before a slam, so there is no chance of him playing Rome.
Even if Rafa wins the US Open, he may play Madrid, unless he's injured.
Exhaustion alone would not prevent Rafa from playing Madrid, because we've seen Rafa win Roland Garros and travel straight to Halle and play instantly.

He should be a great pick at both events so it's frustrating to see him talk like this.
And what is the point of his 8 hour a day training sessions if not to be fit enough to play two slams played a few weeks apart? I thought he worked his ass off so his stamina would be supreme? Now's the time to use his superior fitness.

I have lost so much respect for Thiem, basically saying he won't give it his all for a major. Yeah, there's extenuating circumstances this year, but he should play to win both the USO and FO. What's a loser's mentality he has sometimes.

Its actually terrible that these two sham slams will be had. Nothing of that stature should be played now

"First of all, it's cool that the French Open is happening. Whether it's in May or October. The only problem is that there are only two weeks between the US Open and the French Open - getting far in both will be almost impossible. If I play the US Open really well, the French Open will be really, really hard. Flying out early in New York would be better for Paris. I have to sacrifice one of the two Grand Slams, that's the way it is at the moment", Thiem explained in an interview with the "Tiroler Tageszeitung" (Tuesday) on the occasion of his invitational tournament "Thiem's 7", which started (today) Tuesday in Kitzbühel.Thiem said in an interview with the" Tyrolean Daily newspaper "(Tuesday) on the occasion of its invitation tournament" Thiem's 7 ", which started on (today) Tuesday in Kitzbühel.

Thiem will tank the USO got it
Why would Thiem go to the USO, if he planned to tank it? That makes no sense to me. IF both Nadal and Novak skip the USO, Thiem has a very good chance to win it. Thiem also could win the USO with both Rafa and Novak competing, with all the match play he will have before the slam.

If those with the best chance of winning think they can't do both then this means that both slams will have less than stellar fields.

I dont think playing both slams is the issue, its the inability to properly prepare for us open with all the restrictions and its still unclear do they have to quarantine once back in europe
In any case no one knows how things will develop in 6 weeks anywhere in the world
Melbourne is back in lockdown for next 6 weeks.. After being praised for its covid results.

Thiem has 380 points between Cincy and Rome. If he does well enough there, he may leap over Djokovic for number 1. Win USO and go deep at 2 of the 3 masters may be enough since his runner up FO points won't drop anyway.

why would djoko skip USO? not only did they change regulations just for him but he also has the antibodies.. not that safety protocols are even a concern to him based on his exhibition tho..

rafas another story, he’s pretty cautious/level headed and the clay is obviously more important to him for many reasons....

i think zverev may finally win his first slam this year

It is just sad that a guy who is being looked upon as the leader of the next generation speaks like this. Meanwhile Djokovic and Nadal at 33/34 will have no problems in doing both.

Antibodies are not shown to be enough to provide protection. People have to stop thinking this virus is a kind of seasonal flu. It isn't.

This year the US Open is more important for Rafa, because he can tie Connors-Sampras-Federer by winning a 5th US Open.
The clay is not as important for Rafa, because he already has the Roland Garros record.
But, because of the pandemic, Rafa may not want to be in America, we'll see.

Looks like the USO will be a damp squib. I doubt Rafa will play, Djokovic as good as indicating he won't and Thiem is not going to give it his all. Will Fedr cancel his sick leave and take the opportunity to add to his slam count?

It would be wise for players from Europe not to put themselves at risk in the USA where the virus is still not under control. They will have to go into quarantine on their return which will affect their preparation for the clay season.
It could be worse. The USO could be in FL.

in my dream, during the covid lockdown I trained so well against the wall that I already won USO + RG + every other tournament scheduled and I am already leading the ATP ranking.
oh, wait, it was a dream.

The schedule is terrible and the ATP and ITF should cancel the rest of the 2020 season and be done with it. The USO will be a joke as will the French etc. It's not worth the risk.

Its a lot easier to manage a tennis slam event than the NBA playoffs, because the basketball players are constantly in contact with each other, so if one player tests positive than the whole team would be locked down and so would the opposition team possibly.

He should register for the USO to bluff the others, then withdraw due to an injury a'la Nadal, then win the French. Oo la la!!!

Federer is in the vulnerable age group, so I doubt he will risk going to the US the way things are going
He is 38, turning 39 in Aug. . A top 4 tennis player, GOAT. The others are 33 & 34. He's not 60+ with diabetes. Jeezus Chr...!!

The calendar is a sham. At least USO plays at normal date (whether it should be played is different matter), but Roland Garros has no place in september.

If a tournament can't be held on its date, they should skip it until next year.

Eurosport commentators are saying that Thiem has told the Austrian press he will play US Open.

His Thiem's 7 is quite entertaining.
Slooooow clay.

Federer and his millions of fans are serious. No jokes about the GOAT, even though he is an underdog at this stage.

Who cares about points? It's about Slams man!!!
in the childish GOAT / BOAT debates? probably yes
in real life, the #1 is decided based on ranking points, the WTF is invited based on ranking points, the seeding happens based on ranking points.

so if purely hypothetical, Thiem finishes the year with: AO final, USO title + RG title and yet Djokodal take the first 2 spots in the ranking, and Thiem never reaches the #2 spot, or #1 spot in ranking, do you think it will be fair?
you might recall that someone called A Murray pretty much killed his own body for the sake of that #1, which according to you nobody cares about.

I get it, but hypothetically, if you asked a player with NO slams and NO number 1 ranking which one they'd prefer, what do you think the response would be?

I think Murray was an idiot chasing the ranking. Ranking are based on points dates and some algorithm. Slam titles are based on winning the tournament. I don't care what the rankings say, the player that wins the tournament was number one when it counted (last player standing).

I also said "who cares" not "nobody cares", and you're right, the GOAT debate is silly. I honestly don't think the players care, they just want to win tournaments, especially slams.
