That makes two of us. Hopefully I can get my work related stuff covered since I'm right outside of DC and see him advance. I'm rooting for him this tournament
Don't get your hopes up too much for a deep run. 2nd match with Kevin Anderson will be no joke.

Part of me would love for it to happen, but that's going to be a good match for sure. I just hope Thiem has been working on his return attack more closer to the baseline

Seems like my prediction might come true.. with both Wawrinka and Djokovic unable to play the US Open, Thiem might become top 5 by default.. o_O

Prediction: Thiem will be in the top 5 by the end of the year

He is NOT taking it to the top. And anyone that watched his painful implosion last night against Anderson will confirm (except Meles).:)

Watched the match last night. It seems like Thiem usually struggles against Anderson more than other players (H2H is 0-6).. Probably a mismatch in game styles . Though this is probably the closest Thiem has ever come to beating Anderson. If his serve was on last night, he surely would have won. At least he decided to start his hard court prep earlier this year. It should make the difference in the weeks to come.

I was feeling for him. His ample posterior was there and fighting. Unfortunately, the most clutch player on tour lost his cool. Up a break twice in the final set.

Dats too bad. :(

According to ATP, Thiem is a "Top Contender" at Rogers Cup.

They'd have some credibility with Zverev in the picture, but not with this guy

Thiem slipped a bit at the Citi, but no shame and he's got the draw to make a ********* showdown in the SFs and more than make up for letting peak Anderson slip by. To my eyes Thiem is in the best form of his career on hard courts and he just needs some draws that keep him clear of super servebots.

The big problem for Thiem going all the way to the top is Zverev. Short of injury Zverev is probably about to pass him for good in the rankings.:( We're just going to have to settle for some slams and maybe a late career plundering like Wilander (Thiemlander:p).

Wouldn't call that an implosion. It was more of a pilfering of a match run amuck with some gassy serving.;) That was peak Thiem on hard courts like it or not.

Thiem is definitely considered a "late bloomer". Even his coach said that he was very late to develop physically. It seems like he is the sort of player who gains success gradually. I just hope Thiem can unlock his hard court game soon! Sascha is only one spot behind him. The next 3 tournaments will be pivotal on deciding which of the two young players will have the lead in the rankings. But its only a matter of time until Thiem and Zverev secure their places among the top 5, maybe sooner than later.

And regarding Raonic, I'm guessing he was simply put there to promote and represent Canadian tennis. He's also seeded fairly high too (6th). Zverev and Nishikori are seeded higher still, but the poster would be probably be too crowded with them included.

Maybe its time for Thiem to seek out the addition of "superstar coach" to his team. Everyone at the top of the game seems to have them nowadays. Even guys like Zverev and Nadal have former top players as coaches. I'm thinking a super coach with an ultra high tennis IQ would be a good choice. Maybe someone like Mats Wilander could be a good fit.

Thiem is the true dark horse of WTF. Literally..

Thiem definitely needs a personality implant it seems; he's been going downhill in the marketability department rather than improving his off court game.

Big, big matches for Thieminator at WTF. He has wins over all these players and has never met Nadal on hard courts. If he beats Dimitrov later today he'll likely play Nadal next (or Goffin should he beat Nadal today.)
18/2017 R16 Madrid Masters Clay Dominic Thiem Grigor Dimitrov 4-6 6-4 7-6(9) 1.50 - 2.62
52/2017 QF Brisbane Hard Grigor Dimitrov Dominic Thiem 6-3 4-6 6-3 1.66 - 2.10
8/2016 QF Acapulco Hard Dominic Thiem Grigor Dimitrov 7-5 6-2 2.50 - 1.53

Brisbane was a great match for both players and Thiem has improved considerably since that match while Dimitrov has had a more up and down year, but is back close to his Brisbane level. Thiem has a chance to win. Goffin on hard courts is also possible by the same reasoning:
3/2017 R16 Australian Open Hard David Goffin Dominic Thiem 5-7 7-6(4) 6-2 6-2 1.90 - 1.90

Thiem was very close earlier this year to winning the first two sets which would win their match at WTF. Thiem and Nadal have never met on hard courts, but Thiem won in Rome on faster, lower bouncing clay. An inspired Thiem would have a chance.

Thieminator has less personality than the Terminator. Only way he's going to become marketable is by winning!

If he takes down Nadal at RG that would help.

....
1. Routinely serving in excess of 220 kph – this is a big change from 2016 where Thiem usually used a big kicker for most of his serves with an occasional bomb. First serve points won on the increase.:p
2. Thiem is noticeably stronger and has more stamina – look for Thiem to beast up for years to come so slowly Thiem will improve especially at holding serve with a stronger attacking game (Thiem saved two games from 0-40 with Paire, and completely beasted out of one with Goffin at Auz Open.)....
Thiem negatives:
1. The Thiem return game with its big improvement on first return in 2016 has stalled. Thiem is still quite weak against the biggest servers like Raonic or Tsonga.:(
2. Thiem speed has stalled. Thiem has reached his physical speed max. No more magic increases in his overall game.

Summary:
Thiem will slowly improve his strength and stamina for years to come and steadily climb the rankings. Thiem the beast will emerge. Thiem may be able to excel on grass this year, but majors on clay and hard courts will be a big asks as the Thiem game will exhaust him before tournament end.
@-NN- We both were too pessimistic as Thiem was a late bloomer on his speed peak. Vampiro amazing
Both of my negatives overcome by Tim.

Better at what? He needs to learn how to beat Murray in matches. Hasn't succeeded so far.

2. Djokovic - Djokovic has the edge, but Djoko is in freefall and not playing until IW. Thiem likely to be very match sharp by that time and a Miami rematch might not go as smoothly.
3. Wawrinka - Thiem has beaten Wawa on clay fresh off his Monte Carlo win. Thiem has nothing to fear in this matchup
4. RaoMug - owns Thiem, but probably not on clay
5. Nishikori - owns Thiem
6. Nadal - Thiem probably in trouble against resurgent Nadal, but the has a chance and would win if Nadal not sharp
7. Dimitrov - Greegor betterer, but Thiem a threat
8. Federer - with two wins in 2016 Thiem will be quite competitive except on US Open fast hard courts
9. Cilic/Monfils/Goffin - Thiem has beaten them, but could be close matches
10. Kygrios/Zverev/Pouille - very even with Thiem and Zverev may be better already

It would be a boon to Thiem if he could get a foothold in the H2H with practically every other player in the top 10. His only positive H2H is against Monfils.

Thiem really has shown great improvement though. Just wish he showed it last night. But he will hopefully now have that monkey off his back.
Yeah, he had a solid tournament for sure. Just nerves that showed up in the final (which was odd after the impressive mental strength he displayed in the SF). Hopefully, this win will give him more courage in any subsequent finals.

My observations:
Thiem right now has one of the worst strategies I've ever seen in a potential top player for winning fast surfaces.

The guy IS a beast, but it's as if he wants to prove that Nadal doesn't stand back far enough!
If he gets hot on clay the results may be different. He should be amazingly strong on clay, and he may use clay as the base of his year as Nadal does. His game should adapt best to that surface.

Tim wins U.S. Open standing back further than anyone probably in the history of the tournament.:p
