I think Medvedev's court position is too deep to really annoy Thiem. Don't think Mad Lad can hang with Thiem from way behind the court and Med isn't fast enough to hug the baseline

Still at #5, just a bit closer to fedr. With no clay points to defend he’s secure to build a bigger cushion unless Thiem wins Madrid (can only gain 400 points and the gap will close to 505 with a title). Rome is where Thiem can gain ground (2R last year). Then Thiem has 250 points to fall off at Lyon but that won’t effect seeding.

Zedraffe is the one to watch in the rankings with 1600 points to defend at Madrid/Rome and he’s only 180 points ahead of fedr. Further slip ups from him and one or both fedr and Thiem could easily pass him.

If Thiem plays well, he should usually win this match up from the looks of it on clay. OTOH Medvedev will play all day as long as he's able. If Thiem gets sick of rallying, he could definitely make mistakes here and lose the match.

We’ll see. I don’t think Medvedev can push the ball forever because he doesn’t have the movement or stamina, but he would if he could. My expectation for the match is Thiem uses the angles and the dropshot to move Daniil around, tire him out and eventually bomb the hell out of him.

Now I could see the Russian’s BH troubling Thiem but not on clay as Domi can play so far behind the baseline without losing much pace on his shots. Of course, that’s just a prediction and it could work out differently.

Medvedev plays so much like a young Berdych that it's crazy. Solid and consistent off both sides. Flatter trajectories. Hits the corners with ease. And a good serve. The guy doesn't beat himself. Thiem is going to have his hands full today.
