I think Madrid goes to Zverev or Federer.
 
A bit of a disappointment in the end, but a well-deserved win for Dominic Thiem.

I hesitate to say this because we have seen too many false dawns exposed. :P

But it feels as though he could be starting to build some momentum, but it feels as though this could be Thiem's year. He's at an age where he should be at the height of his powers. The younger guys are still too inconsistent (Zverev appears to have dropped off a cliff after his WTF win). The Big 3's grip on power might have weakened (a bit early yet, but we will see), at least outside of the slams. The new coaching relationship with Massu seems to be working out well; Thiem not only played well, but he played smart.

He had a breakthrough in IW with his first Masters; granted, Miami and MC were disappointments, but I think those are forgotten with this week in Barcelona. We've seen in the past how players who are ready to make a breakthrough can just go the last step with the confidence of starting to get consistent results. (And we have seen how in past years the big guys have just snuffed out any such insurrection, at least partly contributing to the "lost generation".)

If he manages to win one of the two upcoming MS events on clay, he will surely go into RG with sky-high confidence.

That's the spirit!! I mean, the guy can hit a 140 MPH serve, he has a monster backcourt game from both wings, can run, can slice, can hit droppers and passing shots and has a decent volley. Is it that impossible??

Bit early for that. Let's see whether he doesn't win Madrid or Rome.

Even if he doesn't, whom do you put ahead of him for RG? Djokovic? He lost in the MC QF to Medvedev, so we can't judge his clay form to be superior. Thiem? Well, he had a great tournament here - but even if he keeps up his great form, winning your first GS is no easy task. Nadal has the experience and RG seems perfectly suited for him. Fognini? :D

Clearly Nadal hasn't been playing at the same level on clay as the last two years, and the season is more interesting for it. For me he is still the favourite at RG.
 
Congrats to Thiem who wins his 13th ATP title and 3rd at 500 level. He becomes the 2nd Austrian player to win the Barcelona title following Muster (1995-6) and, since 2008, 1 of only 3 players along with Verdasco (2010) and Nishikori (2014-15) to win the title other than Nadal. He also becomes 1 of only 2 players, along with Federer, to win more than 1 ATP title this season so far.

Commiserations to Medvedev who didn't deserve that 2nd set bagel but, after winning the 1st 3 games, it was all 1 way traffic and little he could do to stop it.

If Thiem outperforms Zverev for the remainder of the clay-court season, he will easily be ranked ahead of him, right? Street has a lot of points to defend in Madrid and Rome.

If Zverev defends those points, or Thiem doesn't do well, surely it's not so clear cut who deserves the #4 seed.

(I personally think Thiem will easily be top 4 by the time RG comes around.)
 
Statement win from Thiem. Nice. While this win doesn't make him favorite for RG, he may well merit being second favorite.

I meant for the remaining three Slams this year. I agree overall that Australian Open should be his best Slam and that much of his best work will be indoors, like his compatriot Khachanov and many Russians before them. Maybe Wimbledon over US Open. I think that he'll do better with more reliable bounces, though.

That's a big if, though. And since you cite a cliche, let me mention another one that is likely a more reliable guide to Nadal's chances at Roland Garros: form is temporary, class is permanent. (Obviously Nadal will one day not be able to contend at RG any longer. But to rule against him on the basis of two tournaments is hasty).

When you realize Thiem barely won more than 50% of his points for the tournament at Stuttgart his loan grass win then yes its impossible. I remember Halle fondly and Thiem's higher level there after Stuttgart, but all Thiem can do is get a good points haul on grass and move one. He's not winning a big grass event.

What the hell is up with this bizarre tendency Medvedev has to attract opposing momentum? And, is this just a recent issue, which also happened against Lajovic at MC, or does he frequently lose tennis matches this way? One of the commentators mentioned a shoulder problem, so maybe that's it, but wait, how does one advance to a final with a bad shoulder? He's got to figure out how to cork the bottle before he becomes prone to getting steamrolled every time something goes wrong in a match.

True, but Thiem is a much better and more complete player now that he was then. While he's by no means a lock to do well on grass it is not entirely impossible.

Grass tennis used to be for the grass experts only. In the past 15 years or so it has simply been the realm of very good players and Thiem is definitely one.

Yeah that's what I saw after watching the highlights that Medvedev was horrible after a 3-0 start in the first set. Poor match overall.

Sigh.. wanted to give you props for being right but you’re not making it easy this way. And this doesn’t change the fact that your previous comment didn’t make any sense at all. It’s like saying “Nadal is quite slow and lacks a good forehand but he’ll beat Federer in straights with his quality s&v skills”. You might be right about the result but that doesn’t mean the reasoning behind it was correct.

Actually I would reverse your percentages. If Thiem becomes a #1 player, wins the French Open several times and rolls into Wimbledon full of confidence, he could win Wimbledon one day. By then, the tour will be dominated by mindless bashers with no variety and Thiem at least has some lovely touch.

I guess we are looking at different tennis matches then, because I got it absolutely right. Daniil couldn’t hurt Thiem from the baseline and resorted to plan B, which failed completely. Just like I said.

Your comparison is way way off, in fact it’s stupid beyond words and totally unrelated to what i said. A poor attempt in all aspects. This also makes me think your intention to give props is fake. Either way, I asked you for a detailed preview of the match beforehand but you dodged it - I wonder why. So, you are just a poor loser I guess.

I didn’t have time to post a reply to that but anyway I already posted somewhere else in this thread that Medvedev wasn’t going to be easy for Thiem and Medvedev was basically like an agile Berdych who is strong on both sides. I also voted Med in 3 earlier. So I already said I was wrong about that. Didn’t watch the match so can’t comment on how the match unfolded. Expected Med to be very tough to beat in rallies because of his flat and deep shots and (unlike what you said) solid defensive skills relative to his height. Thought the occasion might get to Thiem and he would overhit a lot.

Not at all a meddy fan.
He always looks tired, self implodes so many times. And above all, his flat shots' based pusher game doesn't give me much joy as well...
If it is destined for me to watch a pushing player then Daniil would be the last choice...

And I don't think he'll account for bigger things on grass if he keeps pushing like this..

Thiem's tactical game may be improving, his slice too. I don't necessarily expect a big splash from him on the grass, but it wouldn't entirely surprise me, provided that he has a little luck with draws.

Match over by page 3 of this thread. There are at least 3 pages of pre-match lead up for a typical Fedalovic match.

Is tennis in trouble?
 
What an awful anti-climactic final. Congrats to Thiem and Medvedev needs to head back to the practice courts. Maybe he can practice with Tsitsipas. That ought to get them both going.

But his total number of fans shrinked to 1/10th when he choked from 5-1 to lose 7-5 6-1
