I've got to watch a bit of Rafa versus Sock, but Thiem at Rome has been slacking off. The Destroyer was merciful today in a quick three set match so some hope that Thiem will have a full enough gas tank. This seems more likely to be even more of a grindathon with both players more troubled on serve. Thiem is very lucky to have Rafa in QF rather than another final where the mileage on Thiem too much of a liability like in Barcelona.

Nadal 4 and 3 in two respectable, uneventful sets.:(

Nadal in 3, but would also be excited to see the Thiemator get his first really big clay win this year over Nadal...

I think Nadal will win in two, but I still wish Thiem would win. I am simply tired of Nadal winning everything. Makes for boring, uninspiring tennis tournaments to watch.

When you've just been beaten by a guy twice in a row very recently, you won't suddenly go beat him. Nadal to walk over Thiem. Maybe Thiem gets one break of serve, but that's as good as it gets for him.

If Nadal wears a bull logo, who wears the matador logo ?:D:oops:o_O;)

Thiem will be the matador ?

I think Thiem has a better chance this time. Of all clay tournaments, I think Rome has the worst conditions for Nadal. (not very bad, he still won it 7 times, but worst)

That's incorrect. Madrid conditions are the worst (relatively speaking) for Nadal. He has five Madrid titles and seven Rome titles.
Let's not forget Madrid became a clay tournament only in 2009, remove also 2012 with that stupid blue clay. In 2009 Nadal had an epic semifinal match vs Djokovic which cost him the title, in 2011 he lost to prime Djokovic, and I hope you didn't expect him to win in 2015 or 2016 with the way he played. In all other years he won. I think people are a bit underrating him in Madrid.

I loved the blue clay! Federer was the only player who could adapt while all the others were moaning.

LOL thread!

Nadal in straights, from the little bits I've been able to watch this Rome - mostly SB - I can't find any reason to believe in any different outcome.
So true. I've never seen such insane hype for a guy who wins nothing like Thiem. I really want to root for him and would love to see an Austrian as #1, but he's nothing special talent-wise.

Thiem sitting down for hours with his team thinking of a game plan to beat the king after two straight final losses.

Meanwhile Nadals somewhere:
Nadal isn't going to take Thiem lightly. Their Madrid finals match was very competitive. Especially that first set tiebreaker. Nadal was forced to play his hardest that day. Thiem still has 7 years advantage over Nadal, age-wise. This is the peak of Nadal whereas Thiem still has more upside and can get better and stronger.

Too harsh. Thiem is talented, but he needs to adjust his game a little. For one, stop taking the ball so far back. I think Thiem has some slams in him.

The ATP Board of Directors has approved a rule change whereby a time violation between points (25 seconds) will be penalized in the first instance with a warning, and the second and all subsequent violations by a fault for the server or a point penalty for the receiver. Currently, the rule is a warning and then point penalty for both the server or receiver.

25 seconds for all players
