I think we saw him last year and couldn't buy a win over mid 30's Djokodal to save his life.
How do you know that’s his peak. You have no way of knowing that he cannot improve on last year’s form. He has a few more good years ahead of him on clay. Can’t say the same about Thiem yet.

Thiem.

Both his RG runs were played against tougher comp IMO, and peak Thiem had much more power than Tsitsi.

If they played each other, What is Tsitsipas going to do when Thiem attacks his backhand?

Serve: slight edge to Tsitsi
Volleys: Slight edge to Tsitsi
Forehand: Thiem
Backhand: Thiem
Movement: equal
Mental: ...

Thiem's inside-out forehand and down-the-line backhand are much better than Tsitsi, who relies more on height and spin cross court. I don't think Thiem gets too bothered by that, he can back further on clay and unload with a longer swing.

10 match series I'm thinking 7/3 8/2 to Thiem, partly a match up issue, partly Thiem being slightly better
FH they are about even. I would even say edge to Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas has better movement too.

As you have mentioned, Thiem had some impressive match wins, even though it rarely ended with winning the title. Tsitsipas on the other hand never beat Djokovic on clay, and most likely never will. And Nadal was too bad in Madrid 2019.

all 3 matches competitive b/w tpas and djoko on clay though:

I think it's time to stop giving next gen credit for "almost" winning. Tsitsipas can push Djokovic, but not beat him. I doubt he'll ever have the mentality to actually win the match.

Well, that's the best they can do. So can only talk about that.
We both know Thiem is clearly better than Tsitsipas prime level to prime level on clay. And even Thiem isn't as good as made out to be by many.

I honestly think Tsitsipas would pass him at some point as he has been consistently improving on clay.

In time Tsitsipas has a great chance to be better. Certainly a better shot to win RG going forward. Thiem's apparent peak was ill-timed.

It depends what happens in the rest of the tournaments. But I can safely say he was better last year in MC.

Revisiting this thread, I think it's not even debatable that Tsitsipas would beat Thiem more often than not on clay. He is simply better on this surface than Thiem. Babypas of 2018 was taking on prime clay Thiem, destroying him in straight sets in Barcelona and pushing him in RG as well (lost in 4 sets). That was prime Thiem on clay against an underdeveloped Tsitsipas. I think the 2021 version of Tsitsipas would beat any version of Thiem on clay quite handily tbh.

This matchup is so riveting in discussion hopefully we get this soon with thiem firing, aRg semi between 2 would be some sight.

Call me when Tsitsipas gets ONE win over Djokovic on clay. Thiem (the "worse" player) has many of them.

Tsitsipas: 2 Masters on clay + RG F + RG SF
Thiem: More titles on clay + 2 RG F + 2 RG SF

Edit: Adding Zverev to the pool because he has 3 Masters on clay.
Which Thiem? At his peak, none of those two will be able to match his kick serve, huge forehand, his highly effective slice and huge backhand. He's no slouch at the net too.
On the other hand, Thiem loses easily now as he's been out of actions for months (or years).
