Thiemerev a Vulturing They Go

Both are playing Hamburg with Zverev taking yet another wildcard into an event. Zverev has played every week since Monte Carlo save the week before and after Wimbledon.

Thiem after breakout in 2015 on July clay has crashed and burned the last two years on July clay. Zverev oddly giving up a 2nd defense of his Washington title (probably getting appearance fee in Hamburg). The 500 points is tempting with a week off before Rogers Cup, but Zverev probably should not be playing anything after so many weeks on tour and Thiem should have his eyes on US Open Series where he did quite well at the Open last year. Thiem playing in Austria as well so really not the best scheduling.

Utterly bewildering they would waste time on clay now before US Open Series. Probably why neither will crack winning a Major. Woeful scheduling. Two guys i really like as well.
Zverev is out of his mind right now. Just pulled up Masters 1000 R64+ wins and he tied for lead last year and very high in 2017. 2019 he has very few Masters 1000 wins. Maybe he's just trying to claw his way back to WTF to defend, but its very misconceived.

Thiem can be defended as he's often done well off clay having just played clay. If Thiem can get some match momentum at one of the tournaments it won't hurt him as badly especially with the Masters 1000 byes. Thiem also needs to vulture points like crazy to fend off anyone taking him out of the top 4 before 2020 Roland Garros (Fed almost certainly will play clay again given how well he's done with it in his schedule this year.)

Hamburg is making out for once. They've had horrible draws since demotion from Masters level. Now they've got something. Zverev has been stuck with Jarry who is in the Bastad final tomorrow.

I'm not surprised, but I'm still annoyed by their poor scheduling. Especially Thiem, he had a great USO run last year. The courts suit his game much better there, and after Nadal is wheelchair bound for the FO eventually the USO is his next best chance to bag a slam.

There's another week Zverev didn't play. The second week of Wimbledon.

Just think though if they both play full US Open Series they risk being gassed by 2nd week of US Open if they make it that far there.

Rafa indeed should have played Hamburg. It would have been an easy 500 points and easy on the joints with a week off before Montreal. Would have locked up the 2 seed for the USO essentially. Now he might have to enter Cincy if he struggles early in Canada, and Cincy is scheduled stupidly close to USO. Hardcourt tournaments should be more spread out, too hard on the joints.

Actually the tournament could be pretty important for the #4 seed at the USO later, but then Zverev also drops 500 points in Washington next weak

1. Thiem signed an appearance fee with Hamburg, I guess till 2020 or 2021, don't remember precisely.
I might assume part of this is his attempt to keep Kitzbuehl tournament, which is EU clay between Wimbledon and US Open.
Can it be that there is an emotional bond? If I am not mistaken, Kitzbuehl was his first ATP title

2. Zverev.
On one side it's an odd one, as he criticized Hamburg for being clay between Wimbledon and US Open.
On the other side, he has a bad season by his standard, and needs a boost in confidence, with Hamburg being a relatively weak tournament for a 500.
On top of this, rumours are that his agent has some ties with Washington, so in the middle of the dispute, it doesn't really surprise that he decided to skip Washington and play instead in Hamburg. I would guess even without any appearance fee this year.
And yes, while Zverev did play many tournaments, as he lost early often, I guess he is not exactly out of gas.

It would be pretty funny if Zverev manages to get that #4 seeding at the USO after working really hard in Canada and Cincy and then he gets Thiem in his quarter and gets killed in the quarter finals.
Nah man Thiem is the true #4 should get that seed. I was tilted enough Anderson got bumped at Wimbly

Thiem has not won either event.

Zverev is definitely out of gas on serve and does not seem to know it; at it again playing doubles with Mischa.

Zverev was born in Hamburg so not a bad choice for him to try some leisurely vulturing. Both have been far from convincing so far, but really no one has lit fire in Hamburg despite a fine draw for once.

I heard the agent change as an excuse by the commies for Zverev in Wimbledon, but its another stupid assertion. Zverev's issue is solely his slide from first class to WTA class 2nd serving numbers.:sneaky:

Thiem did this exact schedule last year so I have confidence in his ability to lose enough along the way.;)

Zverev is akin to a drowning victim grasping for anything to get him to WTF. The amazing thing is with how bad his season has been so far he's still 10th in the ATP race.:cautious:

Thiem has not won either event.
Indeed, Thiem didn't win Kitzbuhel.
Kitzbuhel 2014 - it was the first final at ATP level for Thiem. Lost to Goffin.
This is without mentioning the WC he received in 2011 from Kitzbuhel and Vienna tournaments.
For a second, in 2011 he lost the Roland Garros Boys final to Fratangelo.
So, I can clearly see that there is an emotional attachment, even if playing US Hard would be more beneficial for him ahead of USO preparation.

It would make perfect sense, just like Thiem's effort to support the tournament, if Zverev wouldn't have publicly refuse to play there.
He explained that playing clay between Wimbledon and USO is a bad idea, especially when one can play Washington.
He as well added if Hamburg tournament would be on hard - he would happily consider it.

Yet, approximately 1 year he skips Washington for Hamburg.
Amid rumors saying that there are ties between Washington tournament and his agent.
Amid the fight between Zverev and his agent.

it's all relative, isn't it?
what is bad for a top 3 / top 4 player might be stellar for someone below top 50 / top 100

Zedrot is out of control and is like someone drowning and willing to hang onto anything. He felt like playing Hamburg and maybe he'll decide to keep playing it. 500 points with often not the strongest draw plus a week off for Rogers Cup is not that bad especially given he's got a great clay game. Frankly he's out of control and playing way too much. It all comes down to him basically fixing his 2nd serve game, but his team appears to be completely clueless on the matter.

I think both stick to their usual schedule before USO.

With Thiem it's easy.
I think he does have the emotional bond to tournaments in Austria, so it makes sense he plays Hamburg clay as well. + Hamburg pays him appearance fee.
It's business like usual.
When did he play last time tournaments in US at this time of the year?

Zverev.
Wimbledon, then break, then play a 500 even, break, masters + USO.
The only thing that changed in 2019 is his relationship with his agent.
On top of this there are rumours about ties between his agent and Washington, so he was kind of forced to play Hamburg as opposed to Washington.

too much discussion for nothing.
and calling it Vulturing... take a racket and go vulturing yourself such tournaments.

I'm clearly in the minority, reading this thread, but I find it somewhat wholesome that these guys are playing in their home country tourneys. Other than the skip Olympics for Kitzbühel thing.
