Thiem's Time Has Come (Again)

Now last year I started the thread after a horrendous start to the year by Thiem just figuring he was due and harkening back to his surprise rise in form in nearly beating Nadal at the 2018 US Open. Thiem promptly won IW.

This year I say it because:
1. Nadal needs to play into form usually to win a major; he's got no runway before the US Open
2. Djokovic despite the obvious hunger, now finds himself in the same spot with his current health sabatical
3. Thiem has shown both fine clay and hard court form in the last two weeks of the ReOpen
4. Nadal usually is suffering physically at the end of the hard court season and so RG becomes a higher hurdle for him.
5. Later stages and probably all the stages of RG will be quite cool which definitely does not help Nadal whose high bouncing game will be taken down into the strike zones of the opposition.
6. Djokovic could very easily sweep with his smart game and new serve on paper, but he's not as young as he used to be so it seems a hard road, especially given his last two slam wins went the distance.
7. Thiem's stamina and strength appear to be on the rise since the Australian Open (where he flagged in the 4th set with Djoko after a tougher road to the final.)
8. Thiem won't be able to over play before the US Open (try as he might)
9. If Djokovic drops the US Open, Nadal will be tempted to follow suit for many reasons.
10. Thiem at the two hard court majors has shown the ability to greatly elevate his game seemingly from nowhere; a real advantage with the 2020 slam schedule.

I saw the original Terminator (1984) movie again three days ago. Great movie with the absolutely sick quote.

That terminator is out there...It can't be bargained with....It can't be reasoned with...It doesn't feel pity, or pain, or remorse....and it absolutely will not stop ever until you are dead!

As for Thiem, lets hope he remains healthy first.

Let's see how long it takes until one of them gets the corona. Even with all the right measures in place.

His time is always bloody coming and he still can’t beat those old men at the top. Fair play: he took out Djok in the RG Semifinal and did overtake Fed in the IW Final, but he still has yet to do it on the biggest stage when it matters. Doesn’t mean much if you can beat them in an earlier round, it only matters how you play in the final. So far he bombed out of the RG final spectacularly bad in the last two sets and had the AO final in his pocket only to lose. It’s not good enough right now, the mentality needs to improve when he’s in a slam final.

Rublev tested positive. He was supposed to play Djokovic in the Adria final and is now cleared and already played thiem seven today.

seems like you're a bit guilty of only watching the finals.:sneaky: You also appear to have not watched all of the Australian open final. Djokovic came out red hot in that match and Thiem still nearly won the first set And then crushed Djokovic the next two sets. I think if you flip the draws in his last two slam finals, Thiem probably wins them; i.e. djoko v nadal before final.

i'm getting of tired of the tour being rigged for the big three. Thiem could win the next two slams and still only be ranked third, just a complete joke.

Mate all that matters is winning the final. What use is it beating the Big 3 all in a row only to lose the final to god knows who. If you do the hard work first and then can’t finish it off in the real world in a real job you don’t get the credit. Thiem can beat Djokovic and Nadal before a final all he wants but he consistently falls at the final hurdle.

And it will happen easily for Thiem as their are no "mental" performance issues. 16-10 in finals despite the notable losses.

I give Djokovic less credit for his last two slams because he had a much easier path than his opponents and barely won. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for him winning more, but all that matters are finals.:sneaky:

I hadn't seen this thread. Well its more than alive in 2020. Check this.:D
Final is on October 11th and with a roof:

Paris, France
Weather averages
June 74°/57°
October 63°/ 50° (that will take a lot of bounce out of the Nadal game)
Castle Thieminator?
There is a reason almost all tour players interviewed say "Rafa in the FO" when asked who is the toughest to play against! The US open sure Thiem can get him but FO is an altogether different ball game.

yes it is this year with the final in middle of October in conditions where Thiem would likely clobber Nadal.:sneaky:

Thiem to me looked better player in AO final - he just couldn't finish Djoko (mental letdown). This time too he ia showing some great level. He can beat Djoko and win USO.

That roof is roughly 15 miles above the court and unlikely to impact play. The weather, maybe.

Hopefully its quite cold and we find out. Roof may help Rafa if they prevent the weather from slowing the clay itself.:(

This time Nadal is the one facing Thiem in the semi. The winner will face Djokovic in the final with a roof. Time for Thiem to prove his worth.
