Thin, "soft" poly causing wrist pain?

Hey all.

My racquet of coice is the i. Prestige MP and I recently bought a reel of volkl cyclone 1,10 in search of a little extra spin.

I had no previous experience with cyclone in any gauge.

I string poly around 20-21kg (44-46lbs).

At first, I absolutely hated the string. It felt jarring and without any power. After some time it kinda broke in and started to feel amazing, giving me some free spin and decent power without losing control. It also felt soft.

The thing is: I started having some wrist pain, and I never had felt it before I tried cyclone. Is it possible that a soft feeling string caused me wrist pain?!

I'm trying to eliminate the possibilities, and other cause may be some change on the sweetspot location (a little more to center, while it was at the top with hyper g 1,20) and shanking.

Interesting enough, I had a racquet strung with hyper g 1,20 and it didn't feel as soft as the broke in cyclone, but felt more confortable anyway to my wrist. I don't know what to think about that...

What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I found Prestige MP tough on the arm with all poly. Played the Prestige Pro 16x19 with Luxilon @ 50 and it was fine.
Try a hybrid with Cyclone or Hyper G in the mains. Gosen Micro Sheep in the crosses. Solid core synthetic gut. 16x19 go up 4 lbs on crosses. 18x20 go up 2lbs on crosses. 44/48 or 44/46. Can maintain poly feel and ease up in the wrist and elbow.

I used Weiss Cannon Mosquito Bite, at 1.16 mm in my signature racquet. It had plenty of elasticity for a poly, but with my racquet maybe too much feel. It got me in the medial side of the elbow from practicing my serve with it. A thinner gauge string will deliver more shock to your hand/wrist/arm/elbow because the string's cross section is smaller and has less absorption than a thicker string. It always gives me something else to consider when choosing a tension. Also, the Prestige is similar to my racquet. Maybe a poor choice for a full poly bed. Too much feel/shock.

A few years ago when I switched from Prince to Babolat racquets I was getting some wrist pain. I used a rubber band for my dampner at the time and mentioned the pain to one of my hitting partners. He suggested that I should put an extra rubber band in the bottom where the dampners go. I did it and I've never had any trouble since then. I don't know if it will work for you, but it's still working for me.

Even a soft poly is not soft enough to not prevent wrist pain. It may be softer than the older generation polys, however it still a poly. A good way to somewhat solve the harshness of a poly is to hybrid it with the poly main and synthetic cross.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

That's very interesting, I've never heard about that before. I guess I'll stick to 1,20 poly, or maybe try a hybrid with the cyclone.

If the ig prestige is anything like the graphene speed pro , I would suggest widening the sweet spot by having syngut mains and round copoly in crosses . Go 4lbs higher in the mains. This will open up the sweet spot and soften the copoly .

I like the idea of that but have never been able to control a set up with a synthetic gut or multi main and poly cross. The poly abuses the synthetic gut or main in a short period of time. Durability was gone after a couple of times hitting. Maybe it has to do with style of play. Hard for me to recommend that because I have never had success with it. Others, this kind of set up may be fine.

I use 18x20 setup and hit with a lot of spin because of the more linear trajectory. I grew up also playing on a head 600 elite pro 18x20 with prince osg duraflex 16 g.

I also am not a string breaker , having the original string still in the head elite pro that I used as a teenager . And that's when I played in tournaments.

You were using poly in the crosses?

I've used Cyclone for years. It is middle of the road for stiffness versus other polys. I'd call Cyclone Tour a soft poly but not Cyclone.

Isospeed Baseline 1.20 got me through a couple of injuries. Plays well for 3-4 hrs and breaks before it goes dead. This was important to me dealing with an injury at that time. My racquets are strung with it now in the fall and winter.

I, too, plays with IG Prestige MP. Too thin of string and low tension sprayed the ball all over the place causing me to hold back, resulting in arm pain. When set up to be not so lively, I could hit out, and arm pain was gone.

I think your wrist pain was caused by the uneven, asymmetrical, cloud alignment around Saturn. Really? If you have any kind of arm pain, maybe you should forego the poly for a while.

It had to do with technique. The too low tension isn't good for control after the 1st hour my mechanics would fail to keep up with the loss of control . I keep tensions up to 51 lbs and control is better and mechanics too. No arm pain anymore .

Hi,
Did you tried it? Compared to 1.24 non star version?
Thanks

I've only tried the 1.19 Star. Liked it, but it is quite powerful and has dramatic tension loss.
It is very comfortable. Too much power/ too little control, so I stopped using it.

Ok so no difference between star or non star versions... Prestretch could help but star version was designed to have really better tension maintenance... It seems to not be the case. :cautious:

Perhaps some difference, but I didn't measure tension loss. It was just too powerful for me. Perhaps Star is a little better. @CopolyX told me the Star was a lot better - perhaps he'll chime in :)

Yeah, hope @CopolyX will chime in! :)

As a sidenote: Gosen Sidewinder is the softest poly string I've used. It's twisted, extremely spin friendly, at least for 4-5 hours until the edges are softened. It's quite similar to Black7, just a little softer.

I find that I come back to Cyber Flash 17. My kind of string. A lot better touch/ feel than the other strings mentioned, not quite as spin friendly and more control oriented. A little stiffer, but just a fraction. It has the rare quality of playing well for me on every shot. Great feel in the forecourt :)

Perhaps your swing mechanics changed trying to adjust to the low power of the cyclone at the beginning? It's a normal tendency to increase wrist movement when swinging harder.
