Think Sampras will show up? [merged]

There was an interview once that Sampras would like to be there when Federer breaks his record and that if it was in New York and London he could make it. Think he'll be true to his word?

I am pretty sure he didn't say HE WILL BE THERE 100%. He said he can make it doesn't mean he will make it.

Why go when you can slack on the couch or serve some aces on your private tennis court?

Pete Has No Excuse Now.

He should present the trophy now since it is "more comfortable" whoever wins. It would have been uncomfortable if Murray beat Fed in the final, now Federer will likely win and even if he doesn't, since Roddick is American and he knows Andy, presenting the trophy to Andy wouldn't be a problem either. I say Pete makes a surprise presentation.

NO. He has said so in interviews this week. HOWEVER, he will be "appearing" live with the NBC commentating crew for sunday's Gentlemen's Finals via phone, Ted Robinson suggested he will be giving live commentary like Agassi did in the USO.

If im not mistaken doesnt some stupid All England Club exec make the presentation...

Anyways, im not sure Sampras would be up to flying to England. I know he said hed go the the USO last year if his record was on the line... wonder if hell do that this year if Roger looses Sunday

Its not live if he isn't there. Watching on his tv and talking into a phone isn't the same thing, and I doubt he'll do that for the entire match anyway.

Rod Laver gonna show up. Much better choice than Sampras. Need to have won all 4 Slams to even stand near Federer.

Why would he want to watch someone break his long standing record?

He won't be there...

I too believe they are real friends. Fed does go to Pete's house and play tennis. Why would they play exhibitions together as well?

But it's not like he just show up... it is up to the all Eng club to invite him formally to be present, just like Borg.

Fed Fan - I concur. I think in an age where sports and icons rarely have longevity, it would be an honor and a historical duty for Sampras to present the trophy to Fed when he breaks the record. PS was in Cabo recently playing Outback tour stuff against Rafter in the final. Whether he would roll to the UK after Mexico, I don't know.

When asked whether that are friiends said "Well we text each other once in a while:" That doesn't sound like real friends to me. The interview was on eurosport.com a couple of days ago.

I think he may have been at Pete's once. But I never read about that,

Scr/w sampras. He'z about to be relegated to the back of the history books. Once Roger has 15 nobody will talk about him just like no one talks about Roy Emerson.

it's a win win for Sampras. If Federer wins, he passes on the guard. If Roddick wins, he passes on the guard (first american to win in 9 years!!)

I really wish Sampras could be there on Sunday...

Just like how Borg was there to witness Federer equal his feat of 5 Wimbledon crowns in a row, it would be a very appreciative gesture on Sampras' part to be there to witness his 14-slam mark being eclipsed.

And it's not like there's bad blood between Sampras and Federer at all. They've practised together, enjoyed playing the exos together and both have spoken at length about how much they admire each other's game and career etc.

Please be there Sampras...

Sampras has no personal or professional obligation to present in what would be clearly seen as a bullsh*t "passing the torch" / "seal of approval" sideshow.

well then maybe sampras should get with net jets.

I had to ROFL... I am amazed by the amount of ad time Net Jets bought in the USA during the Wimbledon fortnight. Is tennis really that much of a rich person's sport to warrant this? Guess they want investors to buy more of their stock.

If Net Jets was smart, they would've offered Pete the use of one to get to London with wife and two kids in tow hehe

Word.

I see the other 7 page thread on this topic was deleted for some reason, so I'll repeat what I said before. Emerson was not at Wimbledon when Pete broke his record, there is absolutely no reason for Pete to be at Wimbledon on Sunday. A member of the Royal family presents the trophy, it has always been that way and it will not change for Federer. If Pete showed up, it would just be to sit in the stands. He is not the type of person that would want to take the spotlight away from Federer anyway. It's Roger's moment, there is no reason for him to share it with anyone. Pete does not need to be there.

Why was the previous thread on this topic deleted? Who trolled?

Yay, one gone now replaced by two. Like a hydra.

Right cause Borg was so excited at the prospect of Nadal potentially surpassing his 4 straight FO titles that he took the initiative to text Soderling after his match and thank him for maintaining the record...if Pete truly wanted to be there to see Federer break his slam record he would be..particularly when Roger's playing Andy Roddick of all people (since Federer is such a heavy favorite against Roddick in the match meaning Pete's trip across the pond to witness the record being broken live is likely well warranted)...therefore the fact that Pete's not going to be in attendance speaks for itself (he clearly doesn't want to be there to see it).

Sampras isn't as good as Federer
that was the case two years ago.

Federer didn't need to beat the 15 slam record
and he didn't even need to win the French either.

Sampras isn't as good as Federer

Yea from an objective standpoint..from Sampras's subjective standpoint however, regardless of what he says publicly, I doubt he genuinely agrees with that statement...particularly after his exhibition tour w/ Federer.

I get the feeling Sampras was trying his hardest in those exhibition matches
where as Federer was just going through the gears.

Roger wanted to put on a show and let the old guy play a few shots
i bet Federer could of 6-0 6-0 him if he really tryed.

I have to agree with this. No way Federer was playing his hardest during those 3 beginning exos.

Ditto. Fed can act too. Fed sure was well compensated for the exos. So losing to Sampras in one match was worth it. It was all good fun for everyone, both Sampras and Fed made easy money.

Sampras doesn't need to be there if he's not comfortable with it or has better things to do. Seriously guys, not everything is about Federer.

I'm sure Sampras will congratulate Roger over the phone.

Forget Peter. The Rocket is the GOAT. Fed usually weeps in his presence.

Maybe today Fed will smile instead--being a hubby and poppa.

Pete showed up alright.....dressed hideous and wearing a pair of sunglasses he seemed to have fished out from some clearance bin.
