Thinking ahead

Maybe if they’re a chess master and they’ve thought about it in the context of every possible ball they could get back after each shot, having a separate plan for each of those …

Good players play the percentages so are more predictable. Allows you to plan ahead as you have a good idea where to expect the ball.

If, by three shots, you mean the shot you’re about to hit, anticipating the opponent’s reply, and planning your response, yes, good players should be doing that.

If, by three shots, you mean your next three shots, then no, that’s a waste of mental effort and a borderline distraction. It’s impossible to predict 5-6 shots ahead unless both your and your opponent are pushers (I’ll push it deep, then he’ll push it deep, then I’ll….).

common to be thinking in patterns
1. kick adwide
2. (if hit well) move near the baseline and look for a short fh... hit cc fh
3. (close the net, cover the dtl passing shot since hopefully i'm maing them hit an off balance running fh)... bh volley to the open court
4. (expect them to run down my volley, watch their balance and racquet face at contact), likely an overhead

in general if i'm "dictating" i'm limiting their high % responses to an single area of the court (eg. cc), and if i can get to my spot early, and solicit a short ball with the quality of my prev shot, i give myself even more time to hit a quality next ball. of course if they can come up with an incredible low % shot, and that's ok (idea is that over time they won't be able to execute over and over)

when i'm not dictating, i'm usually at the mercy of defending 2 or even 3 options, which over time is a hard % to beat

in general i want to play the %'s like in poker. i want to force my opponent to be betting/calling when they have the lower % hand to win... fortunately there's no such thing as "all in" on a single point... so if i'm playing the right %'s consistently, over the entire match i should win

More possible at higher levels where there is more control and consistency. I think lower rec is more focused on hitting the ball generally to a spot and then where best to recover based on where that ball is and MAYBE what the opponent might hit back.

If you are significantly better or worse than your opponents, thinking ahead is irrelevant. You will either be overpowering or overpowered.

If you are closely matched, directionals or safe shots until you get a short ball. Very little thinking involved.
