This defeat might just destroy Medvedev

Let's be real for a moment here:

Dani got his first slam only because Novak was going for CYGS in New York and he simply crapped himself.

In any other setting, Dani would have never straight setted Novak.

And now he's failed to capitalize on Rafa replicating Novak's choke for 2.5 sets; he predictably gave back the choke and this time Rafa didn't ask for any refunds and toughed up the very, very improbable AO win.

Dani's got a very taxing style himself and he's no spring chicken anymore at 26.

With Alcaraz, Aliassime coming up, and Tsitsipas and Zverev already there, he just might have hit a ceiling and i'm not convinced he hasn't already peaked . Any physical problem will spell his doom considering his cumbersome technique.

Listening to Medvedev's press conference he said Nadal's level of tennis lifted in the 3rd Set, and also said that Nadal was physically stronger in the end.
Medvedev simply didn't have control of the match, so he can accept it.

He still is the mentally strongest of the next gen despite him crumbling today but Tsitsi and Zed once they have a slam under their belt will overtake him in the next few years

Nadal looked slow af, Medvedev just cant hit close enough to the lines, lacks power and just eventually returns a ball poorly giving Rafa the chance to hit a winner with the forehand. In 2008-2014 Medvedev would not have been top 10 ranked I think, maybe top 15. 1990s (or later) born tennis players are a joke.

I doubt it will destroy him but it will certainly hurt him for a good while and so it should. It would be more worrying for his future career prospects if it didn't.

I don´t think so. Had Medvedev not already won a slam it might hurt him. But Medvedev is already a champion for GS, and the level he will face in 2025 is likely gonna be low unless Alcaraz

No he'll be fine. Plus for him now his less favourable part of season is coming in april-june. Can aim to peak again for Wimbledon now and I think he has the game to do well on grass although needs improvement in his net skills

Wow, FAA wasn't squat last week, according to you, and now he's pushing Med out of the way. How quickly things change. You didn't even mention Jannik.

Anyways, Med will be good as new come the USO.

Med will remember what Rafa said that Med will win in the future. That made an impression on him. You could see it in his face.

He said he would choose play in Russia if it conflicted with a slam on the calendar. He is going to play for himself. he sounds done. he will bounce back

I am no Medvedev fan but that guy is tough as ****. I think he will bounce back strong, and if anyone be mad and extra charged up by this. It might be the impetus he needs to even raise his game on clay or grass coming up (I think he has more potential on grass than clay personally).

Dani's been a big man playing a small man's game for these last 5 years.

Any drop in fitness or any small injury will greatly affect his game.

I guess we'll see soon enough.

Dani choked.

That simple push in the net in the third was a killer for his confidence.

He then fought fatigue and Rafa's power and was clearly cooked in that fifth set.

how come? it would give him plenty food of thought to get boxes of tricks, rather than only serving and hitting hard

A few crushing defeats are meant for great champions. It’s what that makes them.

All of the Big 3 have gut-wrenching defeats Nadal W 07,AO 12, Djokovic RG 13,15, Fed AO 09 USO 11. You're right in that the bad moments seem to drive them to excel further. After Djokovic lost RG in 2020, did anyone really think he'd win it the next time? After Nadal had a disappointing 2021 and coming off injury, did anyone really think he'd win this AO, even without Novak playing?

Medvedev seemed properly pissed in the press conference. It'll be interesting how it goes. On the one hand he said he'd rather play in Moscow but on the other hand he said he'd play for himself. The way he said that sounded more as if this will be a motivational moment.

Nah, 2nd slam is often the hardest slam to win for many multiple slammers.

Med is unique hitter and he has great game for today's environment. He will get more slams.

He was struggling physically since the quarters.

And he doesn't have the power of Zverev, Berrittini or Tsitsipas to hit through his opponents.

It's incredible 35 year olds novak and rafa are physically stronger in long 5 set matches than the mids 20s stef, med and others.

It'll be interesting to see how med performs in the next maych against Djokovic, if that was a one off win or he poses a more consistent challenge.

Medvedev plays so far behind the baseline he looks like a clay court specialist of the 90s, like Squillari or Mantilla, he doesnt have a power problem.
