This Grass Sucks!

No, it's not the one that you're thinking, but the one that everyone if falling on and getting hurt on. What the hell happened to Wimbledon's QC? Two years ago, Raonic falls and ends up needing hip surgery, and now this embarrassing cavalcade and falls, stumbles, and injuries.

What the hell has happened?

Simple, players have stopped preparing properly for the grass courts and only a couple of the injuries have been directly related to slipping on the grass.

Players slip on grass early, that's nothing new. Half the injuries are shoulders and knees, and have nothing to do with slipping. It is a hard transition to make to grass from the more sure footing of clay, but it's always been, why this generation of numbskulls struggles so badly to stay on their feet is a mystery only they can answer. Hewitt got knocked out today, he wasn't complaining, he said it's always been like this. Amen to that.

Independent inspectors like Pete Sampras and Boris Becker should inspect the courts at once, just like Moya did for Tiriac's dangerous blue-clay experiment and found it unplayable.

Are you serious? Have you ever played on clay before? It's like playing on ice.

Grass is too much fast this year. That's the problem

The biggest problem is for the sponsors and tv channels. Viewing figures will take a hit with so many of the stars out.

But at the same time it's refreshing to see some new faces.

You could be right. The only player who has looked truly comfortable has been Murray, and he got in alot of preparation. It will be interesting to see Djokovic tomorrow, he's got an easy match, but i'd like to see how he's moving and what level of comfort he's at.

True.
I did not watch the first 3 days, as I did not expect them to be too eventful. I was wrong.
And now I almost have no reason to watch the rest of the tournament.

isner and Tsonga had regulation knee injuries that could've happened anywhere,

sharapova/ azarenka have an ill advise wide stance for early in the tourney (don't try that stuff till the baseline is worn..)

everyone knows grass needs smaller steps and people try to play as if the grass wasn't there..

Idiots doing stupid stuff, you cannot slide into open stanced two handed backhands on grass. Simple.

My thoughts is that most players who have been injured on the grass don't know how to move on grass or haven't been practicing.

I watch Federer play on grass and you see him taking very small, precise steps. He knows you can't move on it the same way you move on clay. Others are galloping... that just doesn't make sense

Sam Smith (ex top 100 wta player and bbc commentator) put it thusly:

"Players these days are more reliant than ever before on traction, especially on hard courts.

"You need to be much gentler and lighter on grass and skip over the surface. You can't be so dependent on pushing off. I think the players are trying to do the same things they do on a hard court and they can't do that on grass.

"Because the bounce is higher these days some of them think, "I'm going to play this like a hard court," and I'm just not sure you can move like that.

"Grass makes you move in a different way to clay and players use completely different muscles and a different technique."

People should pay attention to what Hewitt has to say about the courts, he has played on them for a while now. Movement on grass is totally different to clay or hard courts, basic knowledge that players should have.

on one had it'sbad about injuries... but the courts looks faster, players are serving and volleying, upsets are happening... feels exciting

It's not the grass. It's the fact there's so few grass tournaments that players aren't used to it when they encounter it. Their movement needs to change, not the grass. They should prep in the warm up tournaments. The early rounds the grass is fresh and green, by the end of the first week, it looks like you're playing on a dirt patch. The grass used to be faster, this is nothing. Stop blaming the grass, the least you want is for them to slow it down so the clay season extends to pretty much the grass season (which is already nothing as it is). The slipping is normal, the players need to move differently and adjust themselves just as the clay court requires you to adjust by sliding. Next week, it will be different. Stop overreacting you TT kids.

There's nothing wrong with the grass, much like there was nothing wrong with the blue clay in Madrid in 2012.

I said this earlier and I'll repeat it here: Wimbledon these days is so tough to call because the grass in week 1 is so unlike any other surface the players play on during the year that it allows players like Rosol or Stakhovsky, players who'd be unsuccessful on any other surface, to have a chance against the top players. In the same manner, players like Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray, who are so used to playing on the same stuff day in and day out, find it difficult to adjust to the slick grass. During this period of adjustment they're at their most vulnerable.

It's not a problem of the surface. It's the calendar. There just isn't enough time (or tournaments) to allow for a smooth transition from clay to grass.

That's rubbish. The calendar has been the same for a lot of years and players had never picked so many injuries like this year. Never before within the last ten years the two main players on the surface (7GS+2GS) have been defeated in the first rounds.
Almost no one was playing S&V succesfully prior this year.

FACT: SURFACE HAS CHANGED: IT IS FASTER AND MORE SLIPPERY

I'm not saying that is good or bad, it's just stating a fact.

Fed and Nadal are getting old though. Fed's bad back has left him half the player he once was. We're talking about a man who used to effortlessly return Roddick's 150mph serve deep or at Arod's shoelaces if he followed it to the net.

He's gone from being a man who was in the argument for greatest returner of all time to shanking the majority of his backhand returns.

On the other hand, Henman used to always beat Fed that way...

Of course they are no in their primes, but...Rosol, Darcis, Stakhovsky....come on!! That's a joke!

Sharapova, who fell down several times, who won his first title here....has she forgot how to step on the grass? Why is she falling all the time? Why is everybody falling? Is it the first time that all the players play on grass? Why do the fall all the time this year and that didnt happen before?

Nadal always loses on fast surfaces to s&ver's/ball bashers. Always has and always will. Berdych at Madrid, Karlovic at Queens, Llodra at Bercy, Florian Mayer and Fed at TMC, James Blake on hard courts about 1000 times, Rosol last year.

He used to lose to journeymen all the time on hard until 2008 when they slowed the whole tour down. Now that Wimbledon's fast again since last year of course he's going to lose.

Federer's loss has been coming for a long time. Remember Falla? Bennetaeu?

Craziest Wimbledon ever...at least that I've watched.

But, my expected final of Murray and Djokovic is still possible. In fact, it is becoming more probably by the match.

This is the time for one of the young guns - Janowicz, Gulbis, Tomic, etc to make their presence known.

This paragraph is full of so much wrong info it's not even funny. Nadal lost to Berdych 7 years ago in Madrid, and has owned that *** ever since. I'd say he can and has beaten Berdych on every surface, wouldn't you? He has also never lost to Karlovic anywhere so I don't know where you got that info from. Nadal has also never lost to Llodra, either, and they have only played once in 2011 in Madrid. Nadal has also never played Florian Mayer at TMC, and hasn't lost to Blake since he started puberty, and leads the h2h..

I think you set a record with the most erroneous info in one paragraph ever posted on this forum. Congrats. Lol.

Rocks, to the contrary. That person who lost to Darcis (who really was injured), was completely exposed. Challenger level in the 90's. If barely. The highlights were so enjoyable to watch.

Oh, and the smooth talker who lost to the guy who is still saving up for his Ferrari, also deserved exactly what he got. He was also a big beneficiary of the humbug that is called grass court tennis today played from the backboards. In the 90's he would be lucky to be making a qf once in a while.

Just pave it over with green and slow cement and paint some grass shadows and be done with it to restore order.

But I would have loved to see what he would have done on this surface. Win or lose it would have been entertaining.

Karlovic has pushed him very close multiple times (Queens, TMC).

Berdych beat him in Madrid indoor as you say.

Florian Mayer beat him in 2011 in the End of Year championships. Indoor.

You're right about Llodra.

Call me crazy but the first week grass doesn't seem faster to me this year than in previous years. I think that some players that lost are way after their prime, some had preparation, others were unfortunate with slipping on grass, others came in with physical issues that didn't make it easier for them on this surface and so on.

It's certainly an eventful Wimbledon, I'll give it that. I can't even remember the last time Fedal both lost before R4.

Murray will be kicking himself if he doesn't win this now.

No Roger who beat him in the final.
No Rafa who barred his way to the final several times.
Djokovic with grass his worst surface.

You're right about Llodra.

Pushing him close and beating him are not one and the same. You said Karlovic beat Nadal at Queens which is totally false.

Yeah, 7 years ago. After that loss Berdych didn't get another set off of Nadal in all of their meetings until Miami 2011.

Wrong. He beat him in Shanghai in 2011. That's not the YEC, and Mayer has never even gotten a sniff at that tournament in his entire career.

Yeah, it reminds me of Madrid 12, where grinders crash out early and guys who take the ball early (as opposed to merely receiving and taking it deep) do well.

Aren't you a Cvac fan? If so I guess he's a grinder too because he lost early in Madrid last year himself.
