This is how you beat players that are better than you!

Happy New Year!

It's a snowy morning in Kansai.

But.

Hope you guys had a great holiday.

And in this first post of the year for me, I want to show you guys how to start beating those players that are better than you.

Because.

That's the only way you are going to reach your full potential and keep moving up the ladder at your club or in your ranking.

Okay, let's get into it.

The first thing that you have to do is...

Get better at scouting.

Actually.

This is something that more coaches need to start helping their players with at every level of the game.

You must be able to scout your opponent, and then you must be able to come up with strategies, tactics, and patterns of play to neutralize their strengths and exploit their weaknesses.

And that can be done by.

Paying attention to their go-to patterns of play, the tempo they like to play at, and zone in on how they deal with pressure!

Look.

Your ultimate goal in scouting is to get to know their game better than they do!

That may sound strange, but look at Brad Gilbert and read his book on Winning Ugly!!!

Learn how to execute better.

This is something that you have to go through and learn from your setbacks, mistakes and choke moments in matches.

Then.

Develop the mindset that it's part of the process, and use the feedback loop and adjust your reactions in future matches.

Think about it?

All the top players had to go through it at some point during their playing careers too!

But.

Since your subconscious mind doesn't know whether what you are mentally picturing is real or not.

Start using warrior meditation and revise the outcome in your mind.

Then.

When you find yourself in that same situation in future matches, you will execute in the flow of the match on an unconscious level.

Practice like you want to play in your matches!

Notice how the elite players win their matches in practice?

Because.

They know that to be able to compete at a high level on a consistent basis, they must play up to their full potential in practice every time they step out there.

How about YOU?

Well, this is one skill that you must develop.

Ask yourself.

Do you consistently perform up to your full potential in practice daily?

Many players don't, then they wonder why their match play results are so inconsistent!

Our high school coach used to say to us…

Bring your A game to practice, or don't show up!

And it was the best coaching philosophy that he taught us.

Anyway.

That's my take on how you can start beating other players that are better than you in months.

Now.

Please share yours in the comment section.

By the way.

No stupid comments, please! LOL

I measure if players are better than me by the scoreboard. If I win, they are not better than me. If they win, they are better than me. Might be only on that day on that surface and the outcome might be different in the future.

I do agree in practicing right and preparing properly to give yourself the best chance to win in every match.

I agree, my coaching point is getting better at scouting and learning how to execute better while going through the self-progression...

Read a book: Play chess like a tiger.
In your scenario, you basically want to make it random. Granted this is related to your point of learning how to execute better, especially if you are red linning..

Even Martina N suggested the same for Blake Shelton against Sinner.

That's what I thought as well, after my last match Tuesday, when I didn't take enough chances ( compounded by not moving well) and the better player wasn't surprised by the pace of my shots anymore( as he was initially, a couple of weeks ago, when we first played).

I thought about scouting as well, at least recognizing his tendencies during the match, I'll also give you that.
