This Olympic Fiasco Will Be Completely Forgotten When CYGS Is Complete.

Only one other man in history has ever achieved a CYGS. And yet we are supposed to believe that it will be significantly diminished by the lack of a Gold Medal.

When it's all done and dusted it won't be in the limelight but it was important for Novak otherwise he wouldn't have competed.

That's exactly the difference. Now he will become "the first man since..."
With the Golden Slam he would have been the first man, period.

Correct. It is a difference. And the difference is extremely small. How would you quantify the difference? Though it is silly to even mix up the two.

This would not even he an issue had the Olympics been played in 2020.

Wouldn't the time to be saying this be after he has won the tournament? A tournament that he has won 3 times out 15 times played is far from a done deal

Obviously IF is assumed here. CYGS has never been accomplished before other than Laver. We are all aware of the difficulty.

This has done irreparable damage to Djokovic’s public opinion at least in the US. He’s getting slaughtered on twitter by the journalist/TV presenter blue check types and the likes of ESPN, ABC etc are skewering his antics today.

I think it will be the first thing shown at the US Open between his matches and brought up everywhere in the build up. Obviously if he wins CYGS the story will fully focus on that, but no, there’s been too much coverage on this for it to go away. The reason is that the comments about pressure are now being linked to him taking a swipe at Biles… I’m telling you, even though it’s a misquote, the damage is already done.

Personally of all the things Djokovic has done this one isn’t all that bad, and saying he betrayed his teammate by pulling out after 7 hours on court in 24 hours is genuinely unfair. However I can read the tea leaves and they say he will be public enemy #1 in New York this year.

It’s not that not having it diminishes it.
It’s that not having it lowers down the...celebrations? Rhetoric?
non Nole fans are now spared Golden slam this and that.
We’ll still have to suffer CYGS but it’ll be a little less painful.

Nonsense. Djoker also cited "mental exhaustion" as one of the reasons for withdrawing. So he is sympathizing with Giles.

Keep your eye on the real prize. Do not be distracted.

Aside from Laver, it has not been achieved by any man in Open Era.

Any other questions?
Except Thiem will win it again. All posters will have egg on their faces for trolling him!

To me he has been a very very lucky player this year.

Australian - He had a tear in his abs. I can't think of any player playing through that pain let alone winning the slam. Was he faking it? Does not matter. That's his home turf.

French - He should've gone out twice - Mussetti and Tsitsipas. The match against Nadal was held later in the evening to his advantage. As the evening wore on, Nadal's shots were not doing any damage.

Wimbledon - Draw was ridiculous. Easiest one!

The event organisers are surely playing their part. Anyway, he won. You make your own luck. I don't begrudge him. I certainly don't want him winning USO. Hell no. Never. Love to see Thiem or Zv or Tsitsi or Med do it. Zv is more likely.

If Thiem does it, most posters on this site will have egg on their faces. I hope he finds his mojo.

Not sure if you’re aware but Thiem has a wrist injury and didn’t play Wimbledon. If he even plays the US open I’ll be surprised. Absolutely zero chance he wins it though, and you can quote me on that.

Based on current form Zverev will be tough to stop now. I feel he’s gonna have a great us open series. This Olympic gold win might have a Andy Murray type affect on him. He has all the tools in his game and if he now has the mindset he can do big things.

It diminishes it "a little" does it?
Quantify it. GCYGS = 100. CYGS = ???

Yes.
You meant "if" not "when", right?

If is implied. Everyone knows CYGS is incredibly difficult. Only one man has ever done it.
Even being at stage 4 is a huge deal. Has any man since 1970 even won the first three?
Wow. We are all fortunate to be witnessing history.
CYGS is the 800 pound Guerilla in the room. Never forget that.

No man has ever done it on 3 surfaces.

Wow. Djoker has already made history by winning hc, clay and grass.

But he'll also be 'the only man ever to win a calendar slam on 3 surfaces', ie a modern calendar slam, like Graf is the only woman.

If he gets a lucky draw like wimbledon where he played a 50 ranked opponent in quarters and avg 100 ranked guys in pre QFs its possible.

He is not overwhelming favourite. He can't go toe to toe with clean hitters anymore.

I disagree. It's just the Djoker haters waiting for any opportunity to jump on him. It doesn't mean anything. A lot of sportsmen do 10 times worse than Djoker and no one cares.

If he runs into Rafa, New Yorkers are not dumb enough to think that Rafa has a chance against Djoker. NYC will be cheering for the Djoker. Cheering for CYGS. Cheering for history.
Somebody can do the needful and post the shocking stats and domination in recent years of Rafa on hard court by Djoker. It is quite sad.

I do agree with this. I think both nadalovic rely on luck of the draw more and more now as they age. Plus I don’t think they will feel easy about Zverev right now. When he’s on like this he’s unplayable at times. This could be the start for him.

Why would they say that when he entered and lost?

If he wins this USO he's goat and everyone knows it. I don't think he'll win because of the insane pressure, but if he does he's the man.

Rafa is going for history too. The joint record holder at us open and the slam record. Rafa would go to first in the best ever debate if he wins it. It’s all to play for but a peaking Zverev might crash both Djokovic and Nadals hopes.

Don’t get me wrong, Novak would be the favourite and would most likely win. I wouldn’t really dislike seeing a CYGS either.

But there is no way the majority of the crowd will cheer for that against Nadal or Federer.

I mean they will mention it so that we know the golden slam was available and he did not complete it. This could be false though, if Laver had a similar opportunity and missed, cuz no one ever talks about Laver missing the golden slam.

Not sure, he's being destroyed by the media and the general public right now and the casuals have somehow managed to twist his "pressure is a privilege" words with Biles and Osaka

I tried to look for it and from what I found it sounds like he spoke about own perspective and own sport, though of course he has the annoying manner of saying things like they are some universal truths, but I doubt it was meant as a swipe at Simone Biles even that it would be interpreted like such by some. In any case, he has learned the hard way that thriving under pressure has its limits. His fabled mental strength was useless when his body gave up. This is what pushing through and piling on pressure on oneself does sooner or later. He wanted more pressure? He is on the brink of turning his season upside down now and not in a good way. End of the season will be very interesting))

PM is the biggest pile of cow manure in the media.

People who hate on Rothenburg probably never heard Morgan speak.
