Gorillas. I prefer their demeanor. Chimps are much more violent. We are more closely related to chimps.

Initial comparisons confirm that chimpanzees are our closest relatives, sharing 99% of our DNA. Gorillas come a close second with 98%, and orangutans third with a 97% share. That reflects the evolutionary history of apes. Genome comparison indicates that the human lineage separated from orangutans 14 million years ago, gorillas 10 million years ago, and chimps 6 million years ago. That order of events is not a surprise, but the dates are earlier than many scientists had thought.

Although on average we are closest to chimps, many of our individual genes are more like those of gorillas. Among them is a gene that enables us and gorillas to hear better than other apes. Until now, some scientists had thought that the development of hearing was what enabled us to develop language - but as a result of this research, we now know this theory is wrong. Fifteen percent of the human genome is closer to the gorilla than the chimpanzee, and 15% of the chimpanzee genome is closer to the gorilla than to humans.

The Book of Tasty and Healthy Food (Russian: Книга о вкусной и здоровой пище, romanized: Kniga o vkusnoi i zdorovoi pishche) is a Russian cookbook written by scientists from the Institute of Nutrition of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. The cookbook was first published in 1939,[1] and a further edition was published in 1952.[2][3] An English translation (by Boris Ushumirskiy) appeared in 2012.[4]

The Betty Crocker Cookbook?
173482816356054287.png

The Betty Crocker Cookbook is a cookbook written by staff at General Mills, the holders of the Betty Crocker trademark. The persona of Betty Crocker was invented by the Washburn-Crosby Company (which would later become General Mills) as a feminine "face" for the company's public relations.[1] Early editions of the cookbook were ostensibly written by the character herself.[2]

More than 75 million copies of the book have been sold since it was first published in 1950.[3] Owing to the dominant color of the book's covers over the years, the Betty Crocker Cookbook is familiarly referred to as "Big Red", a term that General Mills has trademarked.

The Cobb Salad

173482816356054287-1.jpg

There seems to be no dispute that the Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood was the birthplace of the Cobb Salad. The details of its creation, however, were not so clear.

One version claims the Cobb Salad was created by owner Robert Howard Cobb (or possibly his chef, Paul J. Posti) around 1937 at the Hollywood restaurant location. The dish was thrown together as a late-night concoction of kitchen leftovers mixed with the restaurant’s French dressing. The story further relates that Sid Grauman (of Grauman's Chinese Theatre), who was with Cobb that night, shared some of the dish and liked it so much that he asked for it the following day. It went on the menu and became one of the restaurant’s signature dishes.

A second version, set earlier in 1929, the same year the Hollywood location opened, credits the restaurant’s executive chef, Robert Kreis, who, at the Hollywood location, created the salad in honor of owner Robert Cobb.

The California Roll

173482816356054287.png

Like traditional sushi, the early California roll was wrapped outside with the noriseaweed, but American diners were inclined to peel this off. This brought about the "inside-out" roll. Who created this masterpiece, however, is disputed.

The earliest documented claim goes to master sushi chef Ken Seusa at the Kin Jo restaurant on La Cienega Boulevard. The claim was made to the Associated Press in 1979 by Kin Jo manager Fuji Wade. Food writer and historian, Andrew F. Smith, stated that this claim remained uncontested for more than 20 years.

A second later claim came from sushi chef Ichiro Mashita at the Tokyo Kaikan restaurant in the Little Tokyo neighborhood in Los Angeles. Mashita was said to have come up with the California roll during the 1960s or early 1970s.

The Moscow Mule?

173482816356054287-2.png

The story of the Moscow Mule begins with the vessel that holds the cocktail instead of the drink itself. Russian immigrant Sophie Berezinski was on the hunt to find a home for 2000 copper mugs she brought with her in 1941, and after many defeats, she found herself at the Cock ‘n’ Bull pub on Sunset Boulevard. The cocktail was born as part of a collaboration between John Martin, hoping to push Smirnoff Vodka, and Jack Morgan, owner of the **** ‘n’ Bull, who was also trying to popularize his brand of Ginger Beer. The magic alchemy from putting it in a copper cup makes this the stuff of Hollywood legends.
