This shot only in Federer's book

yeah he uses that one alot actually. pretty effective shot since as an opponent youre trying to cover a dropshot and are moving forward so its basically impossible to reach the deep slice into the corner.

i like the extended highlights video btw. for some reason i dont understand none of the highlight reels ive seen so far showed the amazing backhand pass to break in the 4th or the delicious drop volley in the following game. 2 of the best points of the match imo. so thanks for that link

I saw Nishikori do it to Blake at Delray beach that's about it.

Federer's flick backhand is a pretty unique shot.

Sweet shot. So effective if you can slice your forehand which to be honest very few players can control like the slice backhand. They can only hit squash shots when pulled wide.

Well, Nadals a stop volley, and Federer does it all the time, but ok...
I think the key to Federers shot is that the preparation looks so much like a inside out fh.

yeah but i meant what you said about the preparation looking like an inside out fh :? it looks like the preparation for a drop shot. thats the whole point.

Its a pretty nice trick shot but its also frustrating since he does this on short balls he should be able to put away anyway. Nice highlights. Fed found his FH in the 3rd set of the Nole semi...the one where his racket acceleration is so fast the ball seems to come after the follow through. Nole went down fighting trying to punch it out on the baseline but he was pretty much on the defensive after every Fed FH. Murray figured this out pretty quickly and tried to engage in BH rallies but could nothing with the slice returns and Fed eventually worked his way into a fh. Fed's BH is probably the most underrated shot in tennis.

The shot the OP is talking about is not a drop shot at all.

It's a fake drop shot that he punches deep. Similar to the Nishikori/Blake video I posted...

Yeah, the slice forehand was great thinking and great execution. I don't recall anyone using it, even sparingly, with this kind of disguise and effectiveness.

Fed has said he quit golf to play table tennis for 'leasure'.

That is a table tennis shot, it is mostly used for defense, putting a backspin ball deep into the table.

In table tennis it is usually looped back with topspin - because the table being so small. It is a direct flat/underspin ball that would be difficult to handle even if you get to it!

dont see the connection. ive played table tennis for years and its a completely different shot, for a completely different situation. that the spin on the ball is quite similar does not really make it a similar shot

besides youd rather try and keep that shot short in table tennis or else its a perfect invitation for the next topspin attack shot from your opponent

True, because you don't pass a player with a push. Credit to the old man in thinking up a new situation - aided with the fact he does do drop shots.

When you add the sidespin push to win the second set - I'm pretty sure Fed uses a little table tennis to help his game.

It was a genius shot that I didn't see coming, it fired up the entire stadium.

Claycourt specialists seem to use fake dropshots quite a lot. But they play a different one: a passing shot from near the net, like Gaudio's here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FsxTqBcxnc. Federer uses "an invitational" fake dropshot.

this is SO good, wonderful! thanks for posting.

and to the topic I must say that if Federer does it, it just looks so fluent, so clear, so beautiful. It's not like he's the only guy doing this stuff, but the way he does is just unreached. btw, the slice 2 or 3 shots earlier is what I believe did also cost murray the game. he couldn't compete with those.

It's the same setup as a drop shot, looks like it's gonna be a drop shot, and then you hit it deep.

Just make sure you get it in the corner because if the other person can get to it he's going to rip it extremely hard.

It is wristy shot and effective as it fakes a drop shot. I wonder why people don't use it more in rallies. It is higher percent shot I think

Thats the best thing I feel like I get when I see Roger is that I can try out strokes that I didn't before. I use the inside out slice drop effectively I have never tried this one. I also need to work on the drive volley which he plays so well. If only I had time to practice.

Puerta did it to Nadal in the FO final in 2005.

I remember that shot. BBC was all over Puerta craftiness that day. Unfortunate Puerta was getting tired killing the ball with his backhand during set 2 and 3. Came back strong in set 4.....Rafa was lucky.

One of the best 4 set finals at the French!

The shot is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWdctaHkOnQ, at 11:30. Highly recommend to everyone watching the whole video, great shotmaking buy both players. It was the last RG final contested by two claycourters.

I have been watching tennis for years and i have never seen a player hit this shot so often but Federer... The rally starts at 23:14.

Federer innovations, ladies and gentlemen.

He also done it couple times in AO this year and this one is superb

Although I was gutted Murray lost a Wimbledon final, you have to give it to Federer. The guy is something special.
If this is a brand of tennis he's finally starting to perfect then look out everyone.
I think he's been experimenting for a couple of years, first noticed this at Toronto 2010, with a high aggression, low wear and tear style of tennis and now seems to be playing this far more consistently.
Maybe Federer is also getting closer.
