This surface slowing down is disgusting, let's be honest

This is the consensus, everyone (players and fans) agree. Every historically fastest hard courts have never been slower in 2024-2025.
Most recent examples are Cincinnati, Beijing and Shanghaï.
Cincinnati was still one of the fastest Masters in 2021-2023. It was already slower last year. This year with the new courts and colors, everyone complained about the slowness. Cincinnati was unrecognizable.
Beijing was one of the fastest ATP500 in the 2010s. This year an article stated it's the 3rd slowest hard court tournament.
And now Shanghaï... used to be a very fast Masters too. Was still decent in 2023 when Hurkacz won the title. Now? Multiple players have said in press conferences, it's the slowest courts they've ever seen...
Indian-Wells was always a slow Masters but it's even slower in recent years. It looks more like glue than hard courts.
Grass courts started slowing down in Wimbledon in the 2000s but the observation is the same now, it gets slower and slower each year.
US Open courts were also very slow this year, many players have complained about it.
I bet the new Paris Masters (in Nanterre) will have the same conclusion. It'll be unwatchable compared to Bercy.
The surfaces have never been slower, too many players have talked about it to deny the accusation...

Who are the imbeciles who decide this? The tournaments organizers? The ATP? Certainly not the fans or the players...
Why are they purposely widening the gap between Sinner/Alcaraz and the other players?
If anyone is benefitting from it, it's Sinner and Alcaraz, no one else.
Slower courts completely disadvantage big servers, big hitters who like to dictate rallies and hit a lot of winners.
Had they slowed down the courts 20 years earlier, I bet Nadal would've won 40 Grand Slams. If Shanghaï and Cincinnati and other HC Masters all played like clay, god knows many Masters he'd total...
I think everyone has figured out the intentions. They want the most Sinner/Alcaraz finals. They want them to win all the Slams and Masters and they know there will be less upsets on slower courts. No chance for other players to beat them on such slow courts, even if they're playing fire.
Federer adressed it at the Laver Cup. He said pretty much the same.

It's absolutely disgusting... No wonder why more and more fans of the Big-3 era are losing interest now. Attendance in tournaments are still high but stadiums are often empty... TV ratings are getting worse by the day. Forum/boards and social medias get calmer and calmer. If you're not a fan of the Sinner/Alcaraz rivalry, there is just nothing else to hang on to. Other players all suck. 12 days Masters and surfaces slowing down are killing the game.

The thing that is killing tennis is the dominance of serve today because of strings. Slowing down the courts means that there are more breaks of serve. In spite of the slowness, the frequency of breaking serve is so much lower than it was in the 1990s. The strings are also stopping more net play. When you speed up the courts you might as well not watch sets and just get to the tie breakers.

We prefer the kinder and gentler term "dunderhead".
Zed has been on the ATP Tour for 12 years—back when your favourite Sinner and Alcaraz were still in grammar school—and knows all about the history of court surfaces.
Zed thinks today's court homogenity is a problem.
When Zed speaks on his firsthand experience with ATP court surfaces, people should listen.

The big 3 also benefited from this so I don't think any big 3 fan has the claim to criticize this lol. If you're such a purist, I'm all for time travelling and going back to 90s conditions if everyone thinks that's so fair and seeing the results, where I think both Sincaraz and the big three might lose a few slams here and there.

But as pointed out by the above it might result in more boring fast court match-ups. It all depends on what the majority wants and I wish we could do a poll not just among elitist fans on here but also among all casual fans to see if 90s conditions with current racquets are really the happy medium. I kinda doubt it.

True, bro! At times I wonder people who want fast court tennis themselves see matches where every sets goes to TB and points end in 2-3 shots??

I don't think most people know the facts. As the courts get slower and slower It is still harder and harder to break serve. That is directly related to the modern strings. You either like tennis today or you don't. But you can't What's happening because of the strings.

Right now there is a lot of complaining and yet apparently nobody is watching the tennis. It is so easy to criticize. I wish people would watch more tennis and keep a more open mind. Right now Perricard is playing a very good match and it has been rather entertaining. I'm a fan of tennis itself and I always hope for the best.

Those tampered numbers means absolutely ZERO when the eye test and players who actually play say different.

Can Fedfans accept the truth? He wasn't as good as Djokovic!

If the first two slam matches were dropped, when he was 19, the rest was 11-4 Djokovic. Their first match was Jan. 2008, and Djokovic won that. And Federer never got 2 slams out in front. And Djokovic poured it on in '11, and good-bye to Federer.

His 9-2 post-'11 reminded me of his slam match-up against Murray, 8-2. Murray got as close as 3-2 with his '13 WB until Djokovic ran away. (All matches pre-dated Murray's injuries.)

In his match-up with Federer, Federer got as close as 3-2 post-'11, and then Djokovic ran away.

In both matches-up, once Djokovic figured out his opponents, he just sped away. Federer's last win was '12 WB, and Murray's last win was '13 WB.

Nadal was fortunate that he got RG to fall back on. His last slam non-clay win over Djokovic was '13 US. And they ended up playing at RG more than at the three other slams, combined.

Alexander knows more about tennis than our TTW forum combined, we should respect him.

I see lot of disrespect for Zverev from some posters, that is bad I guess.

Ehm, why not? I have my preference as a tennis fan regardless of whether any of my favorites benefitted or not, that's besides the point.

I never liked the homogenization of the courts and never will. 90s were indeed far superior in that regard.

fair. You're not from the "let's take slams away from players I don't like and keep them for players I like" bunch.

Fritz is right.

I don't take any pro's words as gospel honestly. They're just people who can be wrong even on tennis related matters.

But Zverev is certainly allowed to weigh-in without being called a mug or something. Dude is a multiple slam finalist and a former #2, won bunch of masters and YEC.

Yes, if Zverev feels courts are slowed down to favor someone then his opinion is very valid because he has stepped on these courts 100s of times to hit a ball and knows what he is talking about.

So we should accommodate lazy servebots (who won't win slams no mattter what the speed)?
There is nothing more boring than a minddumbing service winner (n)
Plus if Federer and Zverev want to open their big lazy mouths, they should provide court speed evidence.
Federer and Zverev should just enjoy retirement and leave tennis to the athletes (y)

Lets be honest. To hit a service winner, you need to be a very good athlete as well.
Someone who doesnt understand this, might not understand a lot about tennis.
All people are asking for, is a bit more of variance.

Wrong (although the court colour did suck)

Indian-Wells was always a slow Masters but it's even slower in recent years. It looks more like glue than hard courts.
Wrong. Its court pace is equivalent to what it was when Mr Slow Court Hater Federer won it with godlike tennis in 2017

This time you are correct - according to the BBC, Centre Court was playing at slow HC speed in the final of the men’s tournament, which sucks

US Open courts were also very slow this year, many players have complained about it.
Wrong, there was no consensus among the players and we have no data for CPI yet.

Wrong, the courts have been slower multiple times over the past 20 years, including the period covering Djokovic’s prime and Fedal’s 2017 resurgence.
Take a look here

If anyone is benefitting from it, it's Sinner and Alcaraz, no one else.
Absolute nonsense lol

They want them to win all the Slams and Masters and they know there will be less upsets on slower courts.
What are sinner’s results on clay and at Indian Wells compared to his results on faster hard courts lol
Attendance in tournaments are still high but stadiums are often empty... TV ratings are getting worse by the day.
Wrong, or at least this is a generalisation which is ridiculous

Zed's comments on court surfaces benefiting Alcaraz and Sinner are likely sour grapes, but that is ultimately irrelevant.

It is best to focus strictly on Zverev’s general remarks about court surfaces without engaging in Ad Hominem attacks on his tentative playing style or domestic court struggles.
But, do Gentle Readers have the intellectual capacity to do so?

I've been on tour for 12 years, and we've always had different surfaces. There were tournaments you liked and others you didn’t. You couldn’t play the same way on grass, hard, and clay courts.
Nowadays, you can play almost the same way on every surface, and I don’t like that. Tennis needs game styles and variety, which we’re currently lacking.

Well said

I don’t recall Zverev ever complaining about it until Federer did it in Roddicks podcast two weeks ago

He did actually, he complained about ATP using bigger balls to encourage defensive play for example:

This is the second thread referencing zverevs comments.
Zverev chose his words poorly as he is known to do often. Jannik won the tournament last year when the court speed in Shanghai was faster.

All Sasha had to say, like Taylor did, is that it’s absurd they slowed down Shanghai this much.
I mean it’ll be interesting what they think of Paris in a few weeks bc if conditions are slower indoors there, then you have to have a discussion…most of the tour doesn’t seem happy with the slower conditions.

Deminaur today said something similar to what Zverev said

If courts are being slowed down to counter the serve beasts..then take away the 2nd serve.
And only have 1 serve.. that would impact the game in many ways.

He did actually, he complained about ATP using bigger balls to encourage defensive play for example:

He was complaining how the balls were different. Now he’s complaining how everything’s the same like Federer did. He just wants to be Federer that’s all
For the past year he was complaining about the balls too heavy and fluffy
see above.

Fact is, as usual everyone’s to scared to say anything but when Federer says the emperor has no clothes, they jump on the bandwagon. Trust me things will change now becuz Federer opened his mouth. The courts will now speed up

Zverev literally said what Federer said words for word. He plagiarized

He has.
I think Shanghai is the tipping point of frustration for how slow they are compared to LY.

i don’t believe he ever said it was to help sinner and Alcaraz like Federer said it.. that’s a pretty accusary statement.. esp when he’s #3… to be honest the courts work in favor of the top players including him so idk why he’s complaining. Maybe he’s just dumb.

Yes Carlos hitting Bombshell and holding his serve was sign of it being slow , also don’t trust data trust eyes.
LoL u never watched indian wells? Plenty of bombshell serving, people that correlate ace numbers whit court speed need to watch another sport. Slams dont release courts speed, all the number u see are estimated by someone else.

While it’s true that there is more serve dominance, slowing down the courts is actually having a cobra effect.

Serves are more dominant because:

Strings allow more spin, so player develop spinnier technique, which works better with lighter racquets, which are worse for volleying and worse for blocking back first serves.

Slowing down the courts makes players lean into the spinny lighter racquets even more, further homogenizing the product.

Carlos was never that dominant at his serve at IW
