I think Novak was bewildered by Fed's resilience in that 5th set. He served for 4-2, and apart from a double fault at 30-15, he didn't much wrong losing back his serve.3-0 against a baseline grinder HC specialist on his favorite surface isn’t a good look. I don’t care how old he is. He outplayed Novak for the whole match and I pretty much accepted defeat by the third set.
Novak didn’t though.
Idem when he got broken at 7-7.
His tactic from the start was to push back and wait for the old man to cave in from fatigue, and it didn't work. How could 38 year old Fed be so present physically after +4 hours of play ?

His plan was backfiring miserably. And the crowd clamored for his blood.
When Fed reached 40-15, Novak had just about enough from both the crowd and his opponent, and couldn't wait to get off the court. He had given everything and still he was facing imminent defeat.
And then it happened.
Like in an old Danny Kaye movie, from one split second to the next, Fed morphed into another person.
He chocked at last.
As others members wrote afterwards, "I have feeling even Djokovic was thinking: Man, WTF is wrong with you?"

Furthermore how quick do we forget the first 4 or so service games from Fed in the fifth.His service games were under absolute bombardment!! How he only gave up 1 break of serve to then break twice!
Fed should've lost 6-4 in the fifth.
Had a break point @ 11-11 too!
It's just one of those matches that both guys threw away & whomever lost the other fanbase would cry foul with "choke".
Bad move for an inferior baseliner to try not to miss against Novak. I enjoyed that Fed stuck to his usual of serving quick , then net rushing etc.

Djokovic was a big favorite to win the final against an much older player. I don’t know why we need to denigrate Federer’s mental strength because he lost as expected. It is very difficult for a lower ranked player to beat the top seed and defending champion even when they have a match point unless the champion makes an error - no surprise that Federer made an UFE on the 1st MP and Novak hit a great shot on the next one.
Djokovic expected to win, Federer was hoping to win and expected to lose - sports usually turns out exactly as the pre-match confidence level indicates. Fed’s fans wanted him to somehow magically feel confident against Djokovic on MP because they think he is a Superman, but he is just another lower-seeded tennis player who couldn‘t win the point that matters against the top-seeded player. Happens all the time at your neighborhood tennis court and happens on Wimbledon center court also.
Let’s give credit to Federer for taking advantage of Djokovic’s weird passiveness and winning two sets easily while keeping the other three sets close. That was way better than 90% of tennis fans likely expected before the match started considering that Djokovic had won 3 out of the previous 4 Slams and beaten Federer in their last 3 Slam finals.

They helped Jason a lot bc at least they could get away from him, but Freddy would have f'd them up in their dreams lol. They both left alive at the end of the movie though, Freddy would basically go dormant for a bit until he had enough fear again to get back to the dream world
