Thomas Berdych booed by Melbourne crowd!!!!!

Baseball players get hit by hard balls going 95 mph. This was a soft rubber ball going maybe 70 mph.

Seems like the crowd will be rooting for Nadal now. Berdych made a big mistake. Almagro had every right to hit the ball where he did. He held his hand up to apologize - but he can hit it to either side or up the middle...even if Berdych happens to be standing there. End of story.

I find this even more funny because Ivan lendl would do this without hesitation and people booed him because of it

Hey, it's a completely legit move to go at the person when he's at the net.

Just don't act all surprised when you get ignored after the match and get called an a**hole for it.

What goes round comes round, eh?

Almagro chose to "win ugly" (and still lose like a punk) and Berdych said FU after the match by not shaking his hand.

Fair play.

Anyone got his on court interview after the match?

They just ran it on 5live - bloody hilarious; getting booed throughout and at the end the guy doing the inteview says "Ladies and gentleman - Tomas Berdych" and the crowd as one goes "BOOOOOOOOOO!":)

Berdych is out of order - Almagro did nothing wrong.

A very stupid gesture from Tomas. I bet it would have been even more satisfying to shake Almagro's hand with an even-that-didn't-help smirk.

And here I was, thinking that Berdych has matured...

That said, there are very few less-likeable male players than Almagro for me. I wonder how anyone can actually believe that the shot was unintentional. I'm not questioning the decision to hit the ball right at Berdych (especially given the score at the time); he was just trying to win ugly. The guys are pros and it can't have been the first and probably wasn't the last ball fired directly at Birdman. It's Almagro's acting like he hadn't done it intentionally that I have a problem with.

BTW, I thought I could lip-read the F-word ending with "-er" after Berdych turned around and was walking back to the baseline. Anyone else catch it?

If someone goes for me at the net, I love it. Not only do I love tennis as a contact sport but it gives me the green light to tear their head off.

Watch him go and win the Australian Open and become the new John Mcenroe who brings some new fans to a dying sport. Lol.

This guy reminds me so much of Lendl, its amazing. Same ackward, *****ly personality. Just where in this crowd of clone tennis players do you manufacture a Mcenroe clone?

IIRC, just the other day Fred went right at his oppo at the net. The commentators called it a good move. Was it the Ivo match ?

Whoever plays Tomas next, please don't body serve him. He doesn't like it when the whole court is empty.

Nadal was already going to slaughter Berdych (Nadal has won their last 9 meetings while losing only 1 set), now Nadal will have some extra fire (maybe).

I think everybody needs to calm down:

They were both in the wrong a little bit
Actually no.

Almagro shouldn't have hit Tomas
Poppycock.

Almagro hit the ball hard and horizontally just above the top of the net.

Somebody should tell Berdsh*t that the game is tennis and that his reaction was totally uncalled for.

Almugro did absolutely nothing reckless or intentional and he was clearly sorry about the accident.

Its over now so let's stop with the "Berdych Bashing"
No I'd rather call Birdsh*t out on his nasty and grudging personality. He is a rancorous, spiteful vindictive ****-ass. He has shown that in the past.

Berdych was right not to shake his hand after such an unsportsmanlike shot.
Boo, Almagro!

I think Berdych was right, indeed. Almagro had the whole court and couldn't find any better than hitting the ball straight at Berdych.
For me it is a code of conduct not to hit at the opponent if you have any other option.

Like I said before, nothing wrong with going at the person if you feel like "winning ugly".

Why, oh WHY act surprised if you get bad treatment after the match for doing this?

Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should or that it's justified.

Almagro got the proper treatment after the match.

F him.

Well, this proves indeed the point that this does not belong on a tennis field. Tennis is a sport of controlled agression, not a full contact sport. There is a net between the two sides an it is understood that people have to behave as gentlemen.
The only times I have hit at the body of someone is when they have done it to me too. And even then I am in control of how I hit them.

I hope you didn't pick that pic to insinuate that the ball hit him in the head (cuz it didn't)

You do know how tall Berdych is I hope? He hit him in the shoulder, so no, he did not hit just above the net. He went for Berdych and he shouldn't be surprised to be refused a handshake.

I actually think Berdych acted very cool here. Knowing myself, for instance, I would have pulled Almagro to the net with a dropshot to give him the same treatment.

Berdych actually showed himself to be more of a gentlemen by not repeating the same conduct as Almagro and playing the game properly.

Almagro v Berdych great great great match.
Almagro smacks ball and hits Berdych in arm.
Berdych refuses to shake hands after match!!
Crowd goes wild and boos Berdych non stop.
Berdych post match interview still believes Almagro was in wrong.
Thomas Berdych you were in the wrong you ass!!!!

If someone hit a ball at you and you felt that he was trying to get you in the head with the ball, well then you have a legitimate reason for not wanting to show the guy your respect.

Then after the battle is over and a few hours have passed, you can talk to the guy and sort it out.

I've been spear tackled playing rugby, sustained a cut over my left eye from someone running over my head and had my knee dislocated. I made sure to hobble out, hyped up on painkillers and still shake my opponents' hands.

I don't know what he was thinking when he did that.

It's a sign of respect for the game to congratulate your opponent on a game well played.

I guarantee the problem is that it was Almagro who hit the ball, in any other player would have done it Bird man would have been fine with it, In swedish media there are tons of stories on Almagro and how hated he is after the Sody incidents. In general he seems to be a frickin moron and his manners on court are awful.

I agree. Well said.

wow, the crowd was just nassssty at the interview.
it was very embarrassing for TB.
i wonder what happened afterwards in the locker room..
the Nadal gang gave him a 'soaps in towel' treatment...?

i just cannot think that Almagro did that on purpose.

was there any other grand slam with so many weird incidents day after day?? (Nalby/Isner, Tomic/Dolgo, and this)

Of course.

And a 100% legit response by Berdych.

So what's the problem?

When you go for someone, don't expect a nice friendly handshake at the end.

What was your reaction when Wawrinka hit Almagro with a ball from closer to the net in the third round?

Also maybe this would be justified if Almagro had any history whatsoever in hitting opponents, but this is the only time it has happened - whereas Berdych has been dickish towards his opponents several times.

He was miles away, not like as if they were standing toe to toe. That all looks perfectly fair to me.

Espositas shot, now they are man and wife.

Did not see the match nor the incident that accompanied it.

Would not have vilified Almagro or lynched him from a tree for refusing to shake his hand, that's for sure.

In that case, if you go down that route I might as well say (and you presumably agree) that it's a 100% legit response to boo him loudly for minutes (and hopefully until his vindictive, unsportsmanlike ass is kicked out of the tournament).

Wow what a wanker. Put your racquet up! Why were you at the net in the first place if you were just going to flinch like a little girl and get passed if you didn't get hit? Lost all respect for Berdych today. He was going down before the ball even hit him.

Then Berdych should give them the Safin treatment (works especially well against the French crowd).

The "I don't give a damn." casual look as he strolls in the stadium.

If a player doesn't want to shake hands, then fine. It means that he believes the other guy is class A dickhole. Which is again, fine. Last time I checked you shouldn't be judged on what you think, but on what you do.

I think this is an overreaction, all he did was refuse to shake hands with someone who did aim a tennis ball right at him. Something doesn't have to hurt to annoy you.

I'm not much of a fan of Berdych but I think he's being unfairly vilified here.
