Thoughts on Dustin Brown?

I personally love watching him play, however I don’t know what happened but he just fell off the map and plays small, lesser known tournaments. It’s sad, considering his skill, he should have won a slam imo. He is more of a flashy player, so perhaps the attention distracts from winning. Thoughts?

He's struggled big time with back injuries. There's some heartbreaking YouTube videos of it happening mid match when he was otherwise obliterating some top players.

Amazing player and lots of fun do watch. But his style doesn't necessarily lead to consistent results and is rough on his body.

bad body for tennis. Basically anyone with that bodytype has short careers in tennis. Tennis has so much explosive multidirectional movement and twisting and torqueing long lanky players cant handle it long term at high levels.

I Like Dustin too though. One of the few players that are interesting to watch.

He's a lot of fun to watch. Wish he was better.

Too many fans, like the OP, *seriously* overestimate his skill. It's not that he's "distracted from winning by being flashy", it's that he doesn't have the skills to play tennis the way the modern game is played and so has to compensate with crazy plays and trick shots. Possibly the most important skill in the modern game is hitting a big, heavy, and consistent topspin forehand, and that's a shot that Brown just can't hit at a top-100 level.

Peak Dreddy was something to behold but he’s now 35 and those peaks are long gone and were too few and far between. Witness the twin kills of The Nadal...he lost to Kohlschreiber at Halle’14 in the next match (16-18 in a 3rd set TB) and Troicki in four sets at Wimby’15.

I wont be to hard on him. He is kind of a 90s throwback player. Lopez is another one though way better.

He shouldve been a lot better than he was though (which consistently wasnt that great). He exposed Rafas limited ability to improvise at Wimby 15. Rafa had a bit of an off day, but Brown made him look all at sea. He even had an air swing in reply to a flattened out Brown return where he hit his own leg on a fh. Brown admitted that he could very rarely concentrate for long enough to win a bo5 match. (Im not familiar with the side effects of long term pot smoking) Hes the polar opposite of Rafa (to borrow Kyrgioss expression). Rafa has mastered his bread and butter to the nth degree and never gives away a free point or loses concentration. Brown plays ad hoc low percentage tennis where every rally is an adventure haha

Great entertainer, but if flashy shots were a requisite for slam success, many more players would have achieved more at slam level.

Dustin Brown is a great guy and a joy to watch, but he's nowhere near slam material. Never has been and never will be. You're inflating his ability, fitness and especially mental strength by an enormous degree here. He's never won a single ATP event and his highest ranking was 64. He was never going to win a slam unless he was playing the WTA.

Don’t forget that Brown hit that blistering return off a Nadal serve, to break him for the set. You could hear the echo of Nadals bone in the stadium. Way to add insult to injury lol.

I watched these highlights several weeks ago. Entertainment wise I'd rather watch him than any of the big 4.
With avid tennis fans will always be remembered for defeating Nadal at Wimbledon in his prime years. Ditto Lukas Rosol.

A dangerous floater with an interesting playstyle and impressive feel and touch at the net combined with the ability to drill the ball off the ground every so often and keep it in for stretches. Looked like an all time front-court great when he was on and an absolutely hapless lost cause when he was off; for better or for worse, the term 'average match' was never in Dustin Brown's lexicon. Either way, he made you watch.

A Rafa slayer. Didn't watch any other matches of his, saw highlights of him beating Zverev a while back but losing to FAA. I imagine Rafa would be more equipped to beat guys like him at Wimby nowadays (not current Brown but current Rafa).
