thoughts on Larry Bird ???

Besides MJ, I would say Bird is as good as any player in the history of the game.

The guy would give 100 percent each and every play and was as good as any shooter to ever play. He was a master passer like Magic. He also could rebound and handle the ball well. He was super clutch in most big games and loved to get his teammates involved.

He was the king of trash talking and played his entire career with all kinds of injuries and pain. The guy was never close to 100 percent.

He would ridicule opposing players verbally to get under their skin and always back it up.

Besides MJ and maybe Magic , I would say Bird was the best I have ever seen and its not even close

He was so bored with the competition in the NBA that he even played one game by only scoring with his left hand in Portland and scored over 30 points. The guy just destroyed everybody his entire career.

Around 7-9 all time depending on if you include pre merger players but def top 10. Second best small forward ever

His older brother, who also played for Indiana State but never turned pro, was considered even better as a ball handler, rebounder and scorer:

Due, in large part to his unusual stature, a whopping 8'2", BB suffered from chronic issues with his knees and other joints. After college he decided against offers from the NBA and went into another entertainment field instead.

If one were to normalize for natural athletic ability, Bird is by far the greatest player of all time. Nobody was more clutch. As it stands he's probably top 3 of all time. MJ first. Magic is not top 3.

No one could make the team better as a whole unit.
Clutch player, best inbounds passer, he could assist as well as Magic, points, rebounds, it was all there.
He was like Federer in the "oh my god" plays.

Magic never got a MVP till Bird stepped aside with back problems.

Jordan is greatest

Bird is as good as any other player and about tied with the great magic

Both are better than anyone in the post Jordan era

Kobe is best player of 2000s but I still give bird the slight edge

Magic and bird era to MJ was the golden age in basketball and frankly I quit watching the game after Jordan

Plus you had an amazing dr j in the early 80s

Bird would be Connors
Jordan would be Federer
Magic would be Mac

I don't know

Bird is getting overrated in this thread. He's not even the goat at his position and people in here are saying he's better than mj and or at worst top 3 all time. He played on stacked teams and wasnt even the best player on all the championship teams

Love Larry Legend. Proof that toughness and heart mixed with a little natural talent can go a long way.

Could pass, could shoot, and was crafty defensively despite lacking the athleticism of his fellow pros.

Bird was smart. Flew away from Bobby Knight at I.U as fast as he could. Then almost single handedly took Indiana State to the national title game. Those Celtics teams, with Bird as the anchor, were awesome.

After bird won one of his championships he did not celebrate the next day

He was out running and training for next year and this shocked his teammates

Crazy story I read in magic vs bird book

Bird was also one of the greatest trash talkers ever

That's more accurate.

Jordan
Kareem
Magic
Lebron
Duncan
Shaq
Bird
Kobe
Hakeem
Moses

How i order the top 10. Wilt and Russell would be 5/6 if you include them but they played in a different era not fair to compare them.

Moses is in no way that high. I think Lebron has already had a better career than Magic, but agree with your 1/2. Shaq can be moved all over, he might be the most dominant player ever(not counting Wilt) but obviously he didn't do that consistently and never kept himself in shape.

Magic and lebron is tough for me right now. Could see it either way just put magic ahead for now since lebron is still playing. There's no doubt lebron will finish at worst the 3rd best ever.

Shaq is hard to rate. At his peak he was second only to Jordan and i can see an argument that he's better at his peak. But he was fat and lazy like 75% of the time so he dropped a couple spots.

Not sure who you would put at 10 over Moses. 3 mvps 1 ring 1 fmvp not many guys left that have better resumes

First one that came to my mind was the Big O or Jerry West. Neither of them have the MVPs, but I've never put much stock int those seeing as Nash has 2 and Kobe only has 1. Also Jordan and Lebron not having like 8 each.

I don't normally think of Moses as top 10, but I guess I usually have Russel and Wilt in there so that would change things. Not much else to argue with about your list

Bird:21,791 points(24.3 ppg)
8,974 rebounds(10 rpg)
5,695 assists(6.3 apt)

Magic:17,707 points(19.5 per game)
6,559 rebounds(7.2)
10,141 assists(11.2)

Just looked it up. I prefer Bird's stats even though I am biased. We will see if lebron passes Bird but he is not as clutch at crunch time. I am sure he passed Bird in points though.
Chamberlain is all time greatest though. He just couldn't get the supporting players he needed.

Air Jordan 2nd greatest of all time but after seeing the Doctor's dunks I have to say that they are more impressive. Doctor J's flight path was a high parabola and Jordan's was more horizontal.

I liked Bird and thought he was great.

Not really a fan of ranking players against each other in the "all time conversations."

But Bird was awesome to watch.

Watch a few of MJs games from the 80s. His feet are consistantly a foot above the other players. And he took it to the rim on most possessions.

Larry Bird: I always ran when I played. Before games. After games. Didn't matter. I just felt a need to stay in top condition. I used to run at least one or two miles, up on the second level of the Boston Garden. I enjoyed it.
Larry Bird: 33:40 for 5 Mile race in 1985, claims last mile was "under 5 minutes"

Then why are you so slow and awkward with your *****' runnin'? Because you *****' runnin' with your shoulders predominantly. Shoot treys but please don't give runner's a bad name, you *****' slowpoke! What's your 5-miler snail, 33:40? Oh, and the last mile in under 5 minutes? Oh please, you should be *****' ashamed of your *****' self being an elite athlete freely giving your super *****' slow run times! Btw, you can't jump for your height!

And by the way, eff you!

/end of rant and swipe:D

Larry didn't need to jump that high. He is 6'9". He would mesmerize the brothers with his moves at times, had the opposing team bench rolling on the floor a couple of times.
