Thoughts on NFL through week 8

Well I thought I would make this a weekly topic, since there seem to be a precious few who like to debate football as much as they like to debate tennis. So here we go, NFL through week 8. I'll start at the top of my personal power rankings:

1: Colts- Going in to Dever and beating a very good Broncos team was impressive. Peyton Manning is without a doubt the best QB in the NFL, but the Colts can't rely on him to win every game. If the Colts can firm up the D, then they should be in this spot for a while.

2: Bears- Another good win, but against the 49ers at home. I think that they are a great team, great D, but they need to beat the Giants and the Pats before i annoint them as the class of the NFL.

3: Pats- Did you watch last night? I was tempted to put this team at #1...Brady is the man, and the Pats look like a super bowl team again.

4: Broncos- They played a great Colts team tough until the end.

5-7: Ravens, Falcons, Giants all looked good in week 8 (especially Michael Vick...jesus...).

8-10: Chargers- Still looking good. LT is a total stud. Cowboys- Looked great with the Romo in beating a tough Carolina team on the road. Saints- Tough loss at home, but America is still rooting for this team.

11: Jags- I would put them higher, but I feel like Byron Leftwich will come back when he's "healthy". They should stick with Garrard and his 5-1 record as a starter.

12: Bengals- Love Ocho Cinco. Tough loss to ATL. Still a dangerous team in the AFC.

13: Cheifs- What the hell is up with the Cheifs? All of a sudden they look like a pretty good team...

14-17: Panthers, Vikings, Rams and Eagles. Last week I REALLY liked the panthers. But you can't get smoked at home by a QB making his first career start. The other three...meh...played mediocre football this weekend.

The rest: Jets and Packers- we'll see, they could have decent seasons, but no playoff hopes.
Titans- Young looks good as a rookie...all I can say is build for the future.
Raiders- Great pass D, they beat the Steelers this week (oh wait, that's no longer an accomplishment).
Redskins and Buccaneers- Continuing to dissapoint.
Texans, Browns, Bills and 49ers- Next...
Steelers- SIT BIG BEN! Batch will get it done while Ben tries to get it together.
Dolphins and Lions- Hey, at least they're not the worst teams in the league. That brings us to...

THE CARDINALS!!!! Hapless, terrible choking team...I thought they would be 7-9, maybe 8-8 (how does 1-15 sound?). Bright side: Leinart is going to be a great QB, Great wide recievers. Down side: Pretty much everything else...and they paid HOW much for Edgerrin "2.8 yds/carry" James?

Good post.

I saw the Broncos HBs tear through the Colts defensive line like 30+ yr old single women at a sale for wedding gowns. But that Corner who was covering Wayne was humiliated! He got ***** on the football field on Sunday! 3 TD's, 138 yards and a 2point convert. Ouch!
And hey, where's Dwight Freeney?

And Michael Vick is a great QB for the moment! 7 TD passes in last 2 games! I only watched the 1st half of the game vs the Bengals and I couldn't believe how it turned out and that Vick turned another great game. Hope he can keep it up. Wonder what's been the difference?

I really like the Chargers, hope I can catch a game or 2 of theirs this season.

Steelers stink. Even Jerome Bettis says they're done. All of Ben Rljsgfldsjflss's fooling around has finally caught up to him. But Charlie Batch? Bah. Bring back Neil O'Donnel!!

Yeah...Denver has a great rushing attack, but the Colts need some work to up their D to at least a decent level. Peyton can't win every game by himself. Wayne is a stud, but they might have figured out that Manning was having a good time going to him... Dwight Freeney gets doubled more than any other D lineman in the league, so his sack numbers are down(well, non-existent), but he's still a presence on the field.

They say 3 years in the west coast offense is what a QB needs to get comfortable. I say Vick just kicks ass period, and he finally has some confidence in his Recievers not named Crupmler (who's a TE).

I really like the Chargers, hope I can catch a game or 2 of theirs this season.

Couldn't agree more with either of those statements. lol

Good post. I have to disagree about Vick though. He has not shown anything besides running ability over the last 3 years. We can't base his passing game on the last two games, but have to base it off of the last 3 seasons, of which is not even mediocre. I may be wrong, but I really don't see him as a dominant QB.

I see him as the best athlete on the field at any time. He never has been and never will be a true pocket passer. That said, I think that he has gone in spurts over the last few years of passing the ball well, and before these last two games his career high for TD passes was 2. He surpassed this in his last two games. He has had enough time in this new(ish) offense, has more than one receiving weapon, and has an O line that can protect him from HAVING to run. What I have seen in the last two games is a Vick who was run first, to a guy who is pass first, but will run when he needs to. Also, the guy has a cannon for an arm, and he has been taking some off of his throws of late, making them easier to catch. Throwing with more thouch is something that seems to suit both him and his receivers. I am not saying he's Peyton/Brady level, but if he starts to complete passes like this ever week, look out.

I'm sticking by my Pats this year. Bellicheck is the best coach in the NFL right now, the man is genius. Tom Brady is incredible, the rookie RB Maroney is sick, and oh yea, there is that wall of a defense in there as well.

Great post Bigserve,

Agree about the Colts and Broncs. I really thought the Broncs would take them but Peyton was cool in the clutch. Really thought the Bengals would be a one loss team at this point. Panthers looked terrible. Brady and the Pats really impressed last night and the Vikings are a pretty decent team and always play well at home.

As for Vick...I'm a Tech grad and I'm not sold. Quick...name the last running QB to win the Super Bowl...oh, yeah, no one has. And Steve Young doesn't count :)

Come on, at least give me Steve Young...lol. I don't think that this year's Falcons will win the Super Bowl, but I think that Vick will get better as a passer.

At this point, even though I rank them #3 at this point, I have to give a major edge to the Pats if they were to play the Colts in the AFC championship, or the Bears in the Super Bowl. This team just finds a way to do it, and do it very well. Props to Bellicheck and Brady, and if they beat the Colts on Sunday night, they are without a doubt, the best team in the NFL.

The Vikings Suck !

They don't suck...I know you must be disappointed though. They are going to have a good year. They gave the Bears a hard time, beat Seattle, lots of good stuff...

Chin up soldier...

I'm not really sold on the Bears. Yes they have a very good team, but they lack experience in winning in the playoffs.
I remember the Chiefs a few years back: They seemed invincible and went deep into the season without losing a game and did it against good teams. But they didn't go far into the playoffs.

Never mention that name in the presence of a Steelers fan, we will never forget Super Bowl XXX....
Oh yeah, sorry about that. 3 interceptions right to the Cowboys DBs with no Steeler in sight. That was worth killing oneself over.

I completely agree with you. I think that they are one of the best teams in the NFL, I have them at #2, but I don't like their chances of winning the Super Bowl. I think that the winner of this weeks Colts/Pats matchup is without a doubt the best team in the NFL, and if it's close, they could easily be 1-2 respectively. For me what it comes down to is the Quarterback. In the playoffs, give me Brady or Manning ANY day over Grossman. With their cupcake schedule the Bears could easily go 14-2, and even win the NFC, but on a neutral site I don't like their lack of playoff experience against a strong AFC opponent.

I also think that the Giants are gonna be a tough team to beat, as well as the Falcons if Vick keeps playing like he is right now. Those two teams could give the Bears a bit of trouble in the NFC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Grossman has been playoff tested yet. That would be my only worry if I was a bear fan. He has that "it" factor, where I think a player like him can really rise to the challenge.

I'm a lifetime Bears fan, and I'm not sold on them either. Their defense is fast and aggressive, but they've shown they can be lit up by a good QB or WR that knows how to work against zone defenses. Look to the playoff game against Carolina last year, and the first half of the Arizona game this year for examples. Just two recent examples, but they still make me a skeptic. I really think Brady or Manning would pick the Bears apart right now.

And that's just the defense. Grossman has only been pressured in two games, and played poorly in both (Minnesota and Arizona). The running game seems to be improving, so hopefully they won't have to rely on him if the pressure is coming.

Great post. The bolded part is spot on, if not even an understatement. Peyton Manning and his WR's would have a field day against the zone D. However, the bears would run all over the Colts, so maybe it's a wash. I think that the Pats have the best shot to beat the Bears, IF that's the Super Bowl matchup.

Regarding picking apart the Bears defense:

The Bears cover two defense has one purpose, to free up the weakside to attack the QB. They have the speed and talent to do it, the approach is not without risks, but so far it has worked. They are also clearly vulnerable covering the slot reciever over the middle.

I have no idea what I just said. How'd I do?

You did good...you did good. So far it has worked well for the Bears. I want to see what happens when they play Brady or one of the Manning brothers. I think that the Bears/Pats game later in the season could be a Super Bowl preview.
