Throwing my racket... at least once a day. (Serious Thread)

Over the last year ive been having a huge problem with throwing my racket unintentionally. It's become so bad that ive thrown it over the highest part of the fence (it's gotta be like 10-12 ft. high) and into another court almost taking somebody out. I'm serious.

When this happens its usually on a ground stroke forehand. My follow through has become quite high like Nadals but I dont think that's the problem.

This has happened the same day ive changed the overgrip.
It also happens regardless of what overgrip I use, but I dont want to use one of the "extra tacky" ones cause ill get blisters.
I'm using 3/8 grip like I always have, never used anything larger.

I hold my racket all the way at the base, sometimes my right pinky even slips off the end cap...

When this happens on an overhead or a serve its usually the end of my racket. When it happens on a ground stroke (the majority of the time) it usually just chips the paint.

I really do not want to readjust my grip on the racket...

Is there anything other than using a golf glove (yes, someone actually recommended that to me lmao) I can try? I'm tired of destroying rackets even though these Kneissls are cheap and I definitely do not want to hurt anyone with my racket flying over the fence, ricocheting off light poles or going over the net.

Racquetball glove would be better than a golf glove. It's worth a shot. I see people playing with them occasionally.

What about a rope at the end of the handle that goes around your wrist like a racketball racket?

I'm gonna take a look at the racketball tether/string deal.

I'm not wearing a freaking glove, unless im golfing, doing rocket surgery, or murdering someone.

Which is more embarrassing - wearing a leash, wearing a glove, or knocking out the 60 year old woman on the next court?

Lol I love you guys are trying to give him solutions to what is obviously a flaw somewhere in his game. Maybe he’s insanely weak and needs to put some muscle on so he can grip the racquet properly. That’s a REAL solution. Not putting a tether onto the racquet or using a glove lmao.

Well in the OP he seems to recognize that his grip needs some work, but he says:

"I really do not want to readjust my grip on the racket"

So, whatever.

Do you play a massive amount? Maybe there are some nerve pressure issues or something affecting your grip.

Of course, all the instructors warn against gripping the racket too tightly. Maybe you could get some guest appearances on some videos!

LOL, you're funny.

You dont get to where I am at tennis by being "insanely weak". Would be pretty hard to blast serves at 120+ and rip 90+ forehands and be insanely weak.

I could obviously squeeze the grip tighter when I play which is not how you fix this problem.

I'm looking for solutions that I havnt yet thought of.

You're gripping the racquet so loosely that it's flying out of your hands, and you don't think that gripping more tightly is a valid solution?

I play between 4 and 6 days a week.

I actually leave my rackets out so the grips can air out a little. If I shove all my rackets into the bag and leave them they're still damp the next morning.

I have 4 rackets I cycle through to make sure that I have a fresh one every set or so.

I know that gripping the racket too tight is bad form. I grip is very loose and my swing is very wrist-y. I also swing very hard on most shots.

This post is what I was more or less what I was looking for. I'm gonna go ask around about nerve pressures next time I go to a clinic. I also use computers a lot so I was thinking it could really just be fatigue from working and extended play. I dont do weight training any more and all of my strength comes from repeated play. I defiantly have the tennis player right arm deal, haha.

you hit 120mph serves and 90mph forehands yet you don't know why your racquet flies out of your hand every practice. Ooooookkkkkk....

No, because I know pressure wise that im not holding it too tight. This has only been a problem in the last year of play.

You do realize that when you throw your club in golf that its actually because you tried to grip the club too tightly right? If anything, im gripping the racket too hard.

You've obviously never been trained if you think im gripping the racket too lightly.

only 120kph!, yeah the issue is definatly strength :p its a problem with how you hold the flipping racket just put your whole had on it and hold it a bit tighter!

I said my pinky comes off the grip sometimes. I dont intentionally hold my racket with the pink off. I'm also not going to hold higher up on the grip because that's not the answer either.

It's not a strength issue and the solution is not to grip the racket tighter.

Loosen your grip then. See how that works.

I would appreciate it if you guys would not try to troll this thread.

You're going to play dumb and say that I didnt specify mph or kph but everyone knows I was talking about mph.

Oh I only saw the guy who quoted you and said kph. I for some reason just assumed it was correct. My bad.

So...

It has just occurred to me that about a year ago I started to wear sunscreen since my uncle had a skin cancer scare. I'm wondering if the sunscreen im using is getting on my grip which is causing the problems.

I realized that I dont wash my hands and I usually wipe them on anything near me since a bathroom isnt always convenient.

I also use the liquid kind since I use SPF 75 so it has to be manually applied unlike the spray kind.

It also makes sense that even if I grip the racket as hard as I can... I can still force the grip to slip by turning the racket with the other. Sounds like some kinda build up doesnt it?

I also wear sunscreen almost every time I play since I live in Hawaii. The only times I wont ear any is when I play at night.

I'm gonna see if washing my hands carefully after putting on my sunscreen works. That's gonna be pretty embarrassing if the solution was to not be lazy and I couldnt figure it out for a whole year.

Build up the buttcap a bit. I shattered two racquets in two weeks last year and I've since built up the buttcap quite a bit. I still notice it wanting to slip on serves but I haven't actually launched one since doing this.

I too thought of putting a tether on the handle but haven't actually done it yet. I'm hoping the built up cap is enough.

wear a wristband, it will stop the sunscreen from dripping down into your palms

I don't understand. You can hit 120mph serve and 90mph FH but you don't know how to hang on to your racket?

How can you rip so hard and not know this stuff?

Regardless :

You must wear wristbands and use a resin bag. Pretty obvious stuff.

You need of the same 2 sticks that you can alternate throughout the match so the grips can dry off between play.

You do all of those things and you will not throw your racquet ever again.

I threw one stick (dunlop 200) doing an overhead, and it cracked it beyond playability. It sucks, and I know the feeling.

Some of the sunscreen I use can be pretty oily, I just use my non-hitting hand to apply the stuff so my hitting hand stays nice and dry.

sounds like its definitely the sunscreen. I had this problem before, and also with a particular product i used to use in my hair, just wouldnt come off my hands. Wash your hands really good a couple times after applying sunscreen, that stuff is hard to wash off. And use the rosin bag if it still slips.

I never used wristbands before because I thought they were just there to wipe your face with. I didnt think they actually had anything to do with keeping sweat off your hands. When I think about it, I do wipe my hands on my shirt constantly, even before I started wearing sunscreen.

I didnt think about a rosin bag either. I used one when I used to bowl but that thought process didnt make it to a tennis application.

I think, now, im going to try the wristband/rosin bag/clean hands fix.

I have a feeling it is the sunscreen though. I've only been having this problem for about a year, which is about the time I started wearing sunscreen.

You definitely are. You're 10mph below the average here for both. How fast are your slices? If they aren't above 100, you're too weak.:|

Yeah, you've got to wash off your hands after applying sunscreen for sure.

I also agree with Caloi in terms of the amount of flare you've got at the bottom of your grip. If it's pronounced enough, your racquet shouldn't be able to get away from you, even when your hands get slippery.

lol @ this thread.

OP - for you to hit that "BIG" and not realize that your racquets are SLIPPING out of your hand due to moisture is just ********.

Are you serious??

If you're seriously going to devote a thread asking for help, listen to the advice, man. I am personally a fan of a perforated grip, because my hands can get sweaty. Some that have some tack are nice too. My recommendation is the Head Hydrosorb with a tackier overgrip.. Also, keep your pinky on the racket. If you're tossing your racket daily, you're not as good as you claim to be.. Regardless of how fast your serve moves. Slow down your shots, fix the problem, then increase the pace and BAM. No more hitting other people with your racket.
