Tiafoe is not good.

I said he was good overall, but he's not good today. This generation seems to be more prone to not performing on quick turnaround (and I hear that excuse made for players on TT regularly). I get travel and and a long week before can be draining, but it's almost like they mentally excuse themselves before they even play - "I was just in the final last week and now I'm playing again; it's understandable if I lose."

Obviously, I don't know if this is his mindset today. Garin is a better clay court player than Francis, but Tiafoe shouldn't be losing THIS bad.

If you had told me that a bakery product would be prepared today I would have thought it would be Garin enjoying the breadstick. He has been ill and then lost meekly in Belgrade and Munich while Tiafoe beat two “hot” players to reach the final in Estoril.

Garin is a clay court stud though. The kind of guy that could have won a French Open and absolutely nothing else in the pre-Rafa times

Fairly common for a guy who makes a run to the finals in a tournament to lose early the next week, people who jump all over that type of result don't have much of an understanding of professional tennis I guess. But I think that guy also said Brooksby would never crack the top 100.

Bob is just lashing out, upset that Tiafoe has reached a career high ranking #25

in no world is losing to Garin on clay a bad loss, especially in the week following a deep run

Tiafoe is so good that he got bounced by a washed up David Goffin in 2nd round of the French Open :-D:-D:-D

he's 27 in the world and still well on pace for his highest ever YE ranking

shrug to what you wrote, it's his best ever performance at his worst GS (has a slightly better than 0.500 record at every other GS, but was previously 0-6 at RG)

Tiafoe is so good that he got bounced in the first round today against Bublik, another player ranks below him.

He was so mentally weak today that he couldn't close out the match. Got a point penalty for hitting the ball outside the stadium. Got bagel by Bublik in the 3rd set. What is is his excuse this time?

Tiafoe lost to Fritz today after leading 4-0 in the 3rd set. Biggest choker since Federer who lost to Novak, TWICE, after having double match point on his own serve. Maybe Tiafoe should give himself a nickname "I am not that good". :-D

What is Wayne thinking when he watches this match? Is he annoyed or happy to take the check either way?

his live ranking is a career high #24 in the world

and he already has given himself a (very appropriate) tag

I can't believe he blew it after being up 4-0 in the third set...he might need to kick back and re-think things for a bit!

In two consecutive weeks:

- CitiOpen: couldn't close out the match against Kyrgios after having multiple match points,
- Rogers: lost after being up 0-4 against Fritz,

A few years ago at the CitiOpen, thought he hit a volley winner against DM and walked away, only to find out that DM got the ball back for a clean winner.

Yep...I remember the 'turned his back and thought the point was over' deal. He's a good player, just needs to re-group.

I've been pretty hard on Frances the last 2-3 years but I am really impressed with his progression and improvement. I see four huge areas where he has stepped up his game:

  1. His serve has significantly improved from below ATP average to a weapon (his second serve is still pretty average and Nadal's inability to attack it today cost him).
  2. He "fixed" his forehand so he doesn't take it back too far like he used to. He still uses the next-gen technique where he points the strings at the back fence on his take back but he has cut back on his errors significantly.
  3. He plays with much more discipline. His gameplan was pretty clear today - don't feed Rafa a bunch of forehands. He worked Rafa's backhand consistently and would only go to the forehand when he could take it wide cross court, getting Nadal on the move and opening up the rest of the court. In the past, Tiafoe would often just kind of wing it out there but he really stuck to the game plan today.
  4. He has the fitness to go 5 sets.
Wayne Ferreira has been a great coach for him but you have to give all the credit to Tiafoe. Hope he wins the whole thing.

Well…he’s good enough to be where he is now, so there’s that. CrAzY NiCk who I picked to win the Open got sent packing, and my second pick has been Tiafoe. I hope he gets it done.

Next up…the If Gang with their wheelbarrow load of “If’s”

“If this, if that…”

They’re saddling up their rides right now…just wait and watch. Lol

Last time I felt like this was 2017 when Querrey was up a set against Cilic in the Semi’s at Wimbledon. That one still hurts for me.
Love Sam and happy he got a chance to WC into his final slam last week; however, he was going down hard in a final vs fedr if he had gotten past Cilic. At that point it was fedr leading the h2h 3-0, all in straight sets.

Yeah but Cilic played like crap in that final compared to how he’d just played in the semi. I was fuming that Sam would have been more challenging than that blistered shell of Cilic we got in that final. The score was closer than it really should have been, that final was a walk in the park for Roger.

Says more about the current level of play and crop than him being good. Pretty ridiculous you have this kind of player amongst others now in the US open making it this far.. More down to the big 3s injuries and not playing

I find the hype now a bit silly. He isn’t that good. His second serve is awful and he just got lucky playing an out of form compromised Nadal. He could only manage a single break of a poorly playing Rublev. I can’t see him achieving much more tbh. Just a fluke run, and I doubt he will win anything much else.
Maybe it’s just me, I can’t see what everyone is raving about

If he can beat an in form Alcaraz or Sinner, I will take it all back.

He's always been "good." Even before this run. IF you can make Top 25 in the world, win even a single ATP title and other finals, make a Slam QF and a three other fourth rounds in Slams, you're a "good" tennis player. At that point your career is better than 99% of players who ever played pro tennis or tennis generally.

Now, if the standard for "good" is only Slam champions and or players who make the Top 10 or 15, whether they win a Slam or not then I guess he wouldn't be "good" yet.

It's all so ridiculous. Why crap on him and his run? He could only play who and in what form was on the other side of the net. And, many players of similar caliber could not take advantage of the exact same situation. And he's actually played pretty damn good.

I call him "T-Awful" but he was good in the Rublev match. I watched the entirety of last year's Foe-Bweh match for the sheer ball-bashing and they did not disappoint. I think Foe was flying in the 4th but let Rublev take it on a mental fart, then Rublev's wheels fell off in the 5th. Foe came out sharper and smarter this time and Rublev looked like he was expecting 2021 redux.

Was tiafoes loss to novak due to novak being in top form and foe not so much? Of course it's an exho but foes first appearance and his reaction after clinching win over tsitsipa looked real. Faa beat novak in straight sets the next day so it's a bit confusing on how to read this loss.

"They were villains, those two Americans continually threw full force in the face of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It was a lack of respect and they only did this because they were unable to do anything else. They are troglodytes of tennis but above all villains towards two tennis players, champions, who have made the history of this sport." -A. Panatta.

ESPN’s James Blakes and Gilbert really hyped him against Medvedev. It is currently the middle of the 2nd set and Medvedev is really taking Tiafoe to school.
Tiafoe just smoked Draper, Sonego and De Minaur in straight sets in Paris and this guy is arguing with me in another thread that he's still "not good" lol while insisting that pro pickleball players are amazing athletes.
