FL - 179 deaths per million, with no end in sight.

Granted, we are not San Marino. We are unlikely to hit 1,278. On the other hand, they now look good.

Everyone talked about how badly Sweden managed Covid, but check their deaths. They made some huge mistakes, especially protecting their old, but FL can only dream of being where they are now. And they never locked down.

You can't tell Americans, as a whole, to be reasonable. They are too stupid. If they are not forced to take precautions, they will flaunt every common sense measure, and we see the result in my state. Every hope we had of a careful reopening is now destroyed.
Sweden - 71,000 cases. 5,420 deaths. Population of 10.3 million.
Norway - 9,000 cases, 251 deaths. Population of 5.3 million.
Denmark - 13,000 cases, 606 deaths. Population of 5.8 million.
Finland - 7,200 cases, 329 deaths. Population of 5.5 million.

Also it's a sad world when you say Florida could only dream of what Sweden had (5,500 deaths). Us here in Australia had 8,300 cases and just 104 deaths thanks to our approach.

Australia, 4 deaths per million. If these numbers are accurate, everyone else should be asking you how you did it. But I'm going to assume that if you are in a country where people can only enter by boat or by flying, you can stop people from coming to your country. Then make anyone who visits who is not tested and negative go into quarantine. Maybe you people listen to sound advice.

The US has done everything possible wrong, and it all started years ago with electing Trump, who still thinks this thing is just going to go a way by magic.
Elections have consequences has never had so much meaning.

Funnily enough we had some different advice to the majority of the world. Our health organisations said face masks aren't mandatory because they aren't effective unless every single person wears one and it could cause a shortage for those who need them e.g. medical staff. As a result we didn't have people going out in public wearing masks and still spreading the disease which is what we saw in America.

We had near full lockdown, for quite a while. And we've re-opened slowly unlike America and all these other countries who went from pure lockdown to a crowded restaraunt with 200 people and a nightclub full of people. My state only just re-opened casino's yesterday and our state borders are still closed for 5 more days. We limited the number of people you could have in your house, restaraunts closed etc. Certain stupid americans would say but maaaa freedoms, well i'd rather what we did and where we are at now than millions infected and hundreds of thousands dead.

One of these players is eventually going to get a more serious case of Covid-19 and see their careers finished, because of permanent lung damage or whatever.

It's going to be horrible for whomever that happens to.

The vast majority of pro athletes who've tested positive for covid are still seriously ill and will likely never be the same

You're info is accurate but misleading.

Sweden 537
Denmark 105
Finland 59
Norway 46

That's all I care about, BUT: there is almost a month lag between spikes in cases and deaths. That's why cases went up and up in FL, but mortality was reasonable, at least for this awful state. Then over the last few days we got hit big. It takes that long for massive stupidity to catch up with you.

Sweden at 537 is no model, and they deserve to get ridiculed. But in comparison to parts of the US, they still look good. Not because they have been wise, but because we have been so phenomenally stupid.

What are those numbers? Infections per 100,000 or deaths per 100,000? Sorry but i'm just looking at the actual data. You've got one nation who stayed open and has 70,000 cases and 5,000 deaths and then their next door neighbour who did shut have under 10,000 cases and just 251 deaths.

..The US has failed miserably, and I don't know why anyone from other parts of the world would risk coming here.

Absolutely indisputable.

It’s pathetic how vulnerable we were/are and how our political leadership has failed us. Thanks Obama ! Oh wait, the Obama administration developed a detailed, step by step playbook for handling a pandemic which Bozo the Conspiracy Loving Clown ignored and instead spent the first two years of his clown show disbanding the pandemic response office and developing no alternative plan other than rage tweeting at Democratic Governors and going into make believe mode.

And the US had the benefit of seeing what happened in Europe, so should have been able to learn from that and be better prepared. It's a self inflicted wound.

There is no doubt in my mind that you guys did the right thing. I don't believe that masks do a damned thing, but I wear one to make other people feel safe, including my wife. It's just courtesy. I think the RIGHT masks worn in the right way could make a difference.

The problem is that in my area you see people who are careful wearing masks all the time, but they play with them, touch them all the time, adjust them, and take them on and off.

Why is Fauci not wearing a mask?

I'm not saying that I would not be glad for someone who is coughing to be wearing a mask, and I would surely want to use anything to stop me from coughing or sneezing on other people, but I believe that just not being close to people is the most important thing. I have not been with anyone else other than my family for months. I don't like it, but it's just smart. So when I see people going to bars, in groups in restaurants, doing all the insane things they do in groups, that's what I think is killing all of us. It's pure selfishness.

Totally. I don't think we are totally to blame for how we started this thing, because so many other places in the world di not pay attention. But it's one thing to have a disastrous start, another to be so stupid and arrogant that you don't believe bad things can happen to you too after things start to explode.

But for the fact that in the US it was, of course, made political mixed with a dose of fantasy and a twist of conspiracy for good measure. Where‘s Joe Friday when we need him:

"Universal Masking" is a simple measure that experts say will save tens of thousands of lives.

These are the non medical cloth masks.

But Americans are not capable of or are not willing to wear them properly.

Do Americans really care about saving lives? NO!

Lots of things would save tens of thousands of lives. But I'd rather have no mask and stay more than 6 feet away from all other people and see where that gets me.

Supposedly we are 2nd only to China in the number of tests given.

But our 111,639 tests per million means that only a fraction of us have been tested. That puts us at #26 in the world.

If you want to stop this thing, find out who has it, then find all the people who contacted them. That will do way more than masks.
But Amerucans are not capable of or are not willing to wear them properly.
Yup. And that's just the tip of the iceberg here.

I'm just curious, what's the current virus case/death rate in Atlanta/Georgia right now?
I think the figures were very low in the regions which they played the Adria Tour, yet 5 or more of them tested positive. Obviously there's a chance these figures aren't so accurate, I'm just curious of those confirmed though.

On July 4, 254 people are listed as having died of coronavirus. 1 death in Georgia. There were 45,000 new cases in the U.S. and 2,857 in Georgia. The 7 day average of U.S. listed coronavirus deaths is 516 on July 4. It has been trending down for 8 weeks. New cases have spiked but they have been trending up for the last few weeks. We had the huge protests a month ago and the average deaths have trended down. I think if the death numbers continue to hold it will be apparent that coronavirus produces no or mild symptoms for 95% of people. 99.87% of people under 50 don’t die of coronavirus. The ones who do have chronic medical conditions. Coronavirus is more than the typical flu but it has been overhyped and maybe the lockdown strategy was the worse decision. States that had less restrictions have 1/10 to 1/3 the deaths per capita as Northeastern states like NY, NJ, CT, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Sweden which had no lockdown or social distancing has a lower death per capita than the U.K., Belgium and Spain which did have big lockdowns.

In 2017, 3 million people died in the United States. Put the 7 month 175,000 projected coronavirus deaths into perspective. How many of these people who have died from pneumonia or their chronic medical conditions. Definitely some. Maybe the majority. We need to compare the year end deaths in 2020 and 2021 to the 5 years preceding.

Universal Masking plus Distancing.
Very simple to do. Exceptions from masking can be given to those with medical conditions. But otherwise there is absolutely no reason not to do it.

IIRC, some of the Asian countries that contained the virus, (South Korea, Japan , Singapore, etc) did exactly this.

We don't care to do it.

Look at these Parisians. They need Teddy Bears to remind them of Distancing.

Daily cases are hitting close to 50,000.

The CDC says there are at least 10 infections for every confirmed case. We will have several million infections over the next month.

Average time from infection to death is 18 days.

We should have a much clearer picture of the case fatality rate very soon.

Stay tuned!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the case numbers are almost certainly vastly understated.
"Our best estimate right now is that for every case that was reported, there actually were 10 other infections," Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the CDC, said during a call with reporters Thursday.

Dmitrov was hugging his oppponent despite feeling unwell before the match.

Tiafoe was distancing on the court, as required per tournament rules. So how and where did Tiafoe get infected? Was he visiting crowded Atlanta bars or engaging in other risky behavior?

Let's hope that Tiafoe fully cooperates with the investigation.

Dimi pumped fists with his opponent and the chair umpire:

BC has been pretty lucky until now, but I'm not sure how much tighter regulations were there compared to, say Quebec, which had about 20 times as many cases.

One possibility is that Quebec's spring break was just before lockdown, and Quebecers are much more likely to fly to Europe than people from BC anyway. BC's spring break was right after lockdown, so the influx of carriers may have been much smaller.

It's hard to pinpoint what made such a big difference between the two. That's not too say confinement doesn't do anything, as we will probably see when things flare up again with the loosening of restrictions. I'm not sure it's fair to compare anywhere to BC, which seemed to have avoided the pandemic mostly through sheer luck.

How are these contact sports like basketball going to come back?

From what I have read, the way it will be done is with dramatically reduced participants, and all those participants are in a locked down quarantined bubble. Like contact tracing with a very expanded core of quarantined participants.

We have contact club sports in Australia that have resumed, with a similar level of lockdown and quarantine for the players. There have already been examples of players breaking the requirements set for quarantine in some sports. There is a lot more at stake in the NBA, and the participants are generally far, far more professional, so the hope is the same issues won't occur there, as the repercussions could be devastating.

I imagine the same way it is an example of best practice in other ways, the NBA may show the best example of how to make things work in the current climate for team sports.

Tennis might be able to learn something but obviously it is a very, very different setup with different risk factors from a contact sport domestic team sports league.

Why were these tennis pros whining about having to stay at hotels near Queens?
They wanted to stay in Manhattan hotels. These pros simply cannot be trusted not to frequent bars and attend parties. Look at the Dunderhead Zverev.

Thanks for your post. A lot of the luck BC has had is who happens to be in charge:
This and politics generally not playing a part in decision making. Governments around the world are studying the steps that Bonnie Henry has taken to address the pandemic.

Good lord the stupidity. And they haven’t even cancelled the event!! It’s still being held. I wonder if Querrey is now isolating since he played Tiafoe.

Honestly, this has just exposed how stupid some players are. Isner is looking like a dumb ****er now with his coronabros comment.
Thank you. How self-centered can you be to be sick and still keep playing multiple matches? Not a smart move. I guess I'll buy it if he was being tested every day but otherwise pure incredible stupidity. I love TFO but this is not good.

Its climate. If it's cold people gather inDoors, if it's really hot people gather indoors. Sweden is doing great now because it's like not that hot even though it's summer. Persian Gulf Mexico southern US and now probably other parts of the US will see some kind of upswing As the temperatures rise. What we are seeing it's not a real second wave, which would require the Krono virus to mutate into something even worse.

Dang, I hope Tiafoe pulls thru unscathed from the disease... The Atlanta exo is nothing like the Adria event. It looked like they were taking lots of safety measures to minimize the chances of spread. Players look like they’re being cautious too. No handshakes or hugs or apparent hanging out at clubs. No pickup basketball or soccer games. But when Tiafoe said he felt dizzy and not himself, my first thought was: “oh man I hope he doesn’t have the ‘Rona.” I’m surprised they allowed him to continue to play after that medical timeout.
People are social distancing so much right now and the fact that it's summer I mean if you're sick it's probably the coronavirus. Tournament was stupid.
