Tier One Ghostwire

I have a set of 17G Ghost Wire. I want to use it in my Prestige. Wondering if I should do a main or cross. I currently have it strung with Tour Status/Firewire @ 48/46, but it's too stiff and low powered for me (for comparison, the exact same setup is perfect in the Extreme). Other strings I have on hand are Babolat Origin, Head Reflex MLT, Velocity, Cream, FXP Tour, Hyper-G, Tour Status, Firewire. I'm just trying to figure out what combo would work best. I want a softer bed and more power but still spin potential.

Basically, FW mains and GW crosses, aka Firewire Boost, looks like ticket. That said, I would probably try Velocity Mains with GW crosses for comfort and power. Not as much spin as the Boost set up, but IHMO I can imagine more pace.

I've heard that Velocity is very low power. Does it still have more power than Firewire?

I am considering something like Origin in the mains but it might be lacking in spin.

Firewire is going to be more comfortable with great spin and power than what you had in before. What @djNEiGht said - start between 40 and 45#. As for Velocity's power level, IMO I think it is higher than Firewire and more comfortable. I think what you loose in spin you make up with control for an all-court game.

Hmm it's a tough choice. Out of those strings, what would you pair with Velocity?

I would want to try Cream or Tour Status mains / Velocity crosses. I've yet to string up Cream, and I remembered that I liked the power and control from Tour Status.

i tried the ghostwire 19 in one of my PS97s and thought it was kind of mushy with no feel. after a couple of sets i cut it out
i dont think i will use the ghostwire again.

typically i use a hybrid setup with NXT 17 in the mains and HyperG 17 in the crosses at 57/52.
prior to the pandemic i use to use a straight Hyper G 17 setup at 50 or 52#s
i still have some blacknight 18, from what i recall, it was a bit stiffer than the ghostwire, and it was a bit more responsive

i think tier 1 sports triumph plays like NXT as my wife use to use NXT but i switched her to triumph as its half the cost
and she couldnt tell the difference.

Maybe it was the gauge? Why 19g?

Is the grapplesnake Liquid similar than ghostwire to use as cross with firewire ?
The reel is like half the price.

My bit on GW as a cross, I've only used it with ytex quadrotwist but it has sightly less spin than simply a full bed of Quadro.

It's a good string but it's maybe second tier at best for a high spin and snap back cross string. Very good or really agreeable qualities as a cross string but it loses snapback a bit faster than some for sure.

I'd recommend it, though, depending on your priorities and budget.

Tested in pro stock gravity pro, extended length. Literally Zvrevs racquet. Might test in my ezone 98+ but I already know that this string has less snapback durability than ytex so it's not going to be my go to cross.

For the record, ytex quadrotwist is great but a little lively and really dead and stiff if you string much past the mid 50's and they only make it in thicker gauge. Kind of annoying but it's super spin heavy.

Going to try hyper g again and a few others. I'm back on the string hunt rabbit hole.

tried ghost wire 1.10 at 41lbs. Really soft string, tried HyperG at the same low tension and Ghost Wire is a better string imo, very different but it's much softer, more control. I'm surprised how much control it had at 1.10 at 41lbs. I think I can go lower, Hyper G at the same tension was really flying on me.

Might try ytex quardotwist

Based on your post, I could imagine that you might like Black Knight 18g at a low tension as well.

Hey tier one, I’m just dipping my toe into your guys’ string options. I’m impressed by the following you guys have. I was wondering what do you think is a comparable to Yonex poly tour pro 1.25? I think ghost wire is my #1 alternative as it is soft and round. Thoughts?

Im not TO, but comparing Ghostwire 1.10 to YPTP 1.15, Gw holds tension better and has a more firm feel where YPTP feels a little more elastic and gives you a little more power but both are pretty soft on impact.

what are you guys stringing it ghost wire at? Seems to be faily low powered string so I don't want to string it too high

like this string but I've tried it a few times and my serve is definitely worse with this string as a main. Otherwise I like everything about it groundies, volleys, returns, serves have lost a lot pace

From another thread.
Ghost wire. Imo the best soft poly out there. Just tried it with solstice power mains and... I am impressed. Also tried it with nxt power mains very very good. Now will do the gut/gw test...
In your opinion @Christoforos Giatzakis what were the differences between the two hybrids? I am currently using HG Soft / GW and quite content (when I'm tired I would prefer a tad more power though), and I actually have some leftover solstice and nxt power from some trades. Thanks!

Firewire 1.25mm / Ghostwire 1.22mm 55M/53X in a Pure Aero+ or Hyper G Soft 1.25mm / Ghostwire 1.22mm 55M/53X in a Pure Aero+

I string a 31-year-old 5.0C client's Volkl C10 Pro frames with 1.25mm Hyper G / 1.22mm Ghostwire at 46M/44X. He like Black Knight mains / Ghostwire crosses, but he likes Hyper G / Ghostwire better. I've been stringing HG / GW since last July to soften up Hyper G. Now that Hyper G Soft has been released to the public, HGS/Ghostwire and Firewire/Ghostwire have been indistinguishable in my Pure Aero + frames. I can hit with either frame and change nothing in my swing or game.

How do you guys feel about this string in an 18/20? You wouldn’t think it’s too underpowered right?
I currently have HGS 1.25 / GW 1.22 at 46/44 in a ~325 SW Ultra Tour and it doesn't feel underpowered for me either, at least for 2h of hitting (energy levels ok). I do like taking big cuts at the ball, though.

I've been using it as a main and it felt very soft/mushy on the main, lots of control as a main but not much power

I tried their Firewire Boost hybrid and I think it caused me some arm pain. Typically I use a hybrid (poly/soft multi) with no arm pain playing 3-4 times a week. I have had 3-4 sessions with the Tier 1 and my arm is definitely sore afterwards, by contrast my other stick is strung with HyperG/Vanquish and I don't have the arm pain at all.

Maybe it's my age (40+) but the full poly or poly/co-poly is just too stiff for me, playing with a PureStrike Gen3.

I know hybrid setups can be tricky but my sweet spot seems to be the Poly/Soft Multi setups. I feel I get the best of spin, power that is still arm friendly. Before anyone asks I have not tried Poly/Gut out of fear I will love it and my bank account will drain out quickly. With poly/multi's I typically break strings at around the 2 week mark, though I hear gut could last longer.

I am always open to suggestions on hybrid setups as I'm looking at Hyber G/Gamme Live Wire next.

I felt very similar with the FireWire Boost. I have tried Black Knight Boost hybrid as well and for some reason the BK boost setup felt softer for me ( at least in terms of arm soreness)

this comparison was made on a Angell TC97 16x19

Ghost wire is probably the softest poly I've ever used. With syn gut crosses, I honestly don't see how it's any less comfortable than full syn gut.

I'm gonna go with fire wire just sine I like the extra power. Feel on touch shots is gonna take a while to get used to.

Do you guys think there is a difference in launch angle between the 17 and 18 gauge? I like to flatten out shots and don’t want it to launch, so do you think the 18 gauge would be a big difference? Also do you think going up in tension could lower the launch angle? Sorry for so many questions :)
Edit: nvm, I found my answer.

I have used GW 17g & 19g, it works very well with flat shots & volleys because even tho the string is soft on impact it is not very elastic and gives you little power back to prevent balls from sailing long.

I would not tension it very high (but I dont have a monster swing with a crazy rhs) I have tried it between 55lbs and 52lbs and liked the lower tension better.

I use it at 46/44, and have been using it for about 10 hours and it’s still good in terms of tension loss. I really like the string, never heard of tier one but it’s a great string and company.

I am sure it is buried in the 4+ pages of this thread but I am not seeing 17G GW available for purchase.

For a 16G Gut main hybrid should I wait for 17G GW to become available for a cross or are you guys using the 18G for a cross with gut mains?

Thanks

Lol I tried that exact setup on the 18g but hated it at that tension
It felt too inconsistent for me personally

I messed up the length on a pack of 17 so I had a 16/17 gauge hybrid and it was pretty good, I think one gauge would be better.

I have now hit with them both and oddly my thoughts are bit different than the others who have provided feedback.

I felt Cream plays deader (less soft) and is more slippery than GW. I prefer it as a cross to gut where I want to reign in the power of the gut and also generate more spin.

I have been struggling a bit with tension lately and I think it is the vs gut and the heat. I was 51/49.... then 53/49... then 53 (10% prestretch)/49... then 55 (10% prestretch)/49...

I have been playing a lot. I mean I have probably taken 4 days off in May and the same for the last 5 months and I am 57.

I think my game is improving a bit and I am hitting the ball a bit bigger and I need a bit more control so I am going to give Wilson or Lux gut a shot in the mains.
