Tier One - Triumph, Strike Force RIP advice

I'm familiar with Firewire, Black Knight, Ghostwire, Tour Status (with BK/GW as my primary setup) but then I got my Angell TC95 16x19 which is more lively than previous rackets I used and I find the ball flying longer with my BK/GW setup. So I started to look at some alternatives to mute the response a bit and was intrigued by a couple of the lesser used strings in the Tier One family, Triumph and Strike Force RIP as they appear to be soft, controlled strings but was wondering if someone can give some input on usage.

Doing some research, Triumph seems to be used as both a main and a cross in a hybrid. Strike Force RIP seems to be more of a cross and Tier One stated in other another thread that it doesn't have the usual recoil of a poly. Any thoughts using these in combination with BK or GW in some form, with the goal of finding something a bit more muted and perhaps softer than my BK/GW setup? Something like BK main with RIP or Triumph in the cross. Or Triumph main with either BK, RIP, GW cross?

Rip 1.18 is my go to cross with natural gut. To me, it's crisper and bites better than GW. Power level seems about the same, maybe a smidge less. That said, BK works better with GW than Rip, imho.

I tried Triumph once and didn't find anything special about it. Hard to say how it would perform in combo with other strings.

Good to know, thanks. Looking through some threads RIP was one of the harder ones to get a gauge on in terms of usage. But it's definitely on the list to try.

The dimples on RIP are significant at impeding string-on-string friction, and you'll have significantly less spin in a BK / RIP setup. Similarly, you're going to get more power than GW going to a Triumph cross. I don't think either of these setups represent a muted version of BK / GW.

Triumph mains are going to play even more lively, as you're going from poly/ soft-poly to multi / poly. If your main objective is to reduce the power-level while maintaining feel, I would swap out your GW cross to a stiffer but still slick cross, something like Kirschbaum Max Power, Yonex Polytour Fire / Tough or Tourna Black Zone.

Yes, I've heard Kirschbaum Max Power quite a few times in terms of string setups for a TC95. Very curious to try it out. Thank you for the input.

Try the sample pack out. It’s on their website for 50% off. I just ordered the 6+1 pack in 18g

You might like BK mains with RIP crosses. For a couple of years, FireWire and RIP were my go-to hybrid until I ordered Mayami's Big Spin. Big Spin mains and RIP crosses is a nice, spin-friendly hybrid. Triump mains with BK or RIP crosses, seems like it would be a waste of money simply because both would contribute to premature damage to Triump's surface due to the shape and texture, respectively. Triump mains with GW crosses however was an intriguing idea.

As luck would have it, I just got a couple of sets of 16g Triump for the first time last week and had some GW 19g I've been sitting on. I strung it up after reading this thread before going out to hit this morning in Babolat Pure Storm Tour. The Triump looks more like it is 17g, not 16, which may have contributed to a bit more spin than I expected out of the setup. Otherwise, it played the way you might imagine an ideal multi main/poly cross combo, big on comfort should.

Thanks for the input. BK main / RIP cross is on my list to try soon so we'll see how that goes. Triumph main with GW cross is on the list as well; it's been a while since I've done a multi main / poly cross so I'm interested to do this. Although Tier One actually recommended GW main / Triumph cross as a smooth soft setup so I guess I'll try it both ways.

I just tried BK main / Triumph cross and it was alright. A bit softer and lower launch angle than BK/GW which I guess is expected. As a cross string, how is RIP compared to GW?

I've read about Mayami to some positive reviews. Is Big Spin something like Tour Bite?

The 18G package contains all strings in 18G or just the GW in 18G and the rest are thicker?
I just ordered to get the 50% off deal.
I like thin gauge strings.

No idea. I've never gone down to 18G before and I ordered it in 18G, and they recommended I try 17G first if all I've had was 16G. It was because I filled out their string recommendation form

Big Spin is like FireWire, a triangle shape, except the profile is twisted. The twist, which allows the apexes to face, IMHO, offers a more predictable response and better control.

I like RIP better because it seems crisper, more power and spin. GW is more muted for me.

Today, I tried Triump with the mains at 60# and Durafluxx crosses at 51#, 17 and 18g, respectively. After two and half hours of doubles this morning, I'm straddling the fence between Durafluxx and Ghost Wire for the go-to cross string.

tier one black knight full bed is splendid..way better than hybrid w GW cross. Absolutely hated big spin (zero feel) and firewire (too harsh)…haven’t had a positive experience with triangular shaped strings at all
