Tiers of the Masters+ Events

Despite its long and storied history Monte Carlo has literally been downgraded. It is barely a 1000 event anymore. I'd probably put it in Tier 4, move Madrid up to 2 because they're trying really hard to make it into a big deal, and put Paris down in Tier 7 or 8.

Shanghai and Madrid (roofs) are definitely higher tier than MC and Canada. Cincy not tier one. Rome also not tier one, because of crappy schedule that almost always makes the player with more rest the winner.

You can't really rank them like that because at the end of the day, aren't they all worth 1000 points.

Does that mean you're just a slave to the points?

What if the ATP came out and gave 3,000 points to the winner of the WTF? Is that now more prestigious than Wimbledon?

Well that's not going to happens so you don't ever have to worry about that occurring. At the end of the day, they're all worth 1000 ranking points if you win so what's even the difference

Not blue.

Though I'd add too that the Rogers Cup has been treated almost like a second class event the last few years as well.

Yes definitely. First of all it switches venues every year which is weird.

Second, the lead-in to a Major is usually going to be more prestigious than the tournament before it.

Third, isn't the surface at Cincy closer to the USO surface?

I’d say only IW and Paris stand out of the Masters pack. The former feels bigger than the rest and the latter smaller than the rest.

I don’t know how exactly you differ Miami from, let’s say, Cincinnati in importance.

I suppose one way to do it is to look over a period of time and see which events seeded players are more likely to miss. Revealed preferences.

Paris for sure is the weakest. Honestly it should probably be a 500.

WTF are less important than M1000s. Ask any pro player.

World Cup of tennis is kinda ridiculous. It’s arguably the most prestigious or whatever, but wouldn’t call it that

Indian Wells should be a slam. New York doesn’t deserve it

Oh that’s easy. One is the Real Slam and the other isn’t.

Are you really comparing ATP tournaments to Grand Slams, the only top-tier events in the sport?

You can’t argue equivalency of points on the one hand, and then argue against equivalency of points on the other.

What would a tennis player or even you prefer if you are given the choice: win the Australian Open or win IW and Miami?
After all, a GS title and the combination of two Masters 1000 titles are worth the same, right?
:sneaky:

Well this is what I’m saying: 2000 points isn’t always the same as 2000 points just like 1000 points isn’t always the same as 1000 points.

Rethinking this, I could be persuaded to swap Monte Carlo and Madrid, though Nadal's position as the clay GOAT and his preference for MC says something imo.

I will listen to any and all arguments here except as they relate to the Paris Masters. It's basically a 500. I don't even think people who win it actually want to win it.
The only thing I don’t like about is that ugly trophy.

Very interesting perspective on it. The creation of the m1000 series was a great way to establish parity and create a sense of excitement. The points are equal but it feels the events are not quite on par.

I do worry about Miami. That event has changed from being (arguably) the fifth biggest tournament all the way down to really struggling in Indian Wells' shadow. It has been hit by shocking luck in the last four years, too.
