tight hips/groin after 15 min on the court

Lately I walk onto the court feeling great, and after about 15 min my hips and especially groins get tighter than a drum. Does this happen to anyone else? Then I usually spend every changover trying to stretch things out, to no avail. Groins will be so tight it really affects my mobility--even walking normally feels not quite normal. Next day I feel fine.

I think it has something to do with the bouncing around and all the side-to-side movement. I've tried doing some jump rope and side planks, which maybe help a little. I am admittedly not the best stretcher.

Any tips? thanks in advance!

If you're tight, don't do the full crescent rotation: start slowly and don't kick very high. Even before doing this I'd jog at an easy pace to loosen up.

I'd look into a beginner yoga class: you're probably tight in places you didn't even know you had.

Worst case scenario is early stages of osteoarthritis. I'm afflicted by it in both hips, I immediatly recognized the symptoms you mention. What age are you?

I'm 39. I think it's the running that is not agreeing with me at the moment. I've slacked back any pre-match running or jumping and it seems to be better.

Thanks for all the responses!

Try hitting the hip abductor and hip adductor machines at any gym. Did wonders for me. The leg press machine also helps, if you don't load it to the max.

Worst case could actually be worse than that. 5-10years ago, I thought that I just had hip flexor/psoas tightness with some possible arthritis for my left hip. Did a lot of stretching, both static and dynamic, and a fair amount of PT.

After x-rays nearly 2 years ago, discovered it was much worse than expected. Avascular necrosis with a considerable amount of osteoarthritis. Top of femur in bad shape (bone death due to lack of adequate blood supply). Femur was no longer in the socket. Not been able to play at all for 3-4 years now. Hoping to get it corrected before Spring with a hip replacement.

Wish I had the problem looked at 10 years ago. Would have been easier to correct. Suggest you have it checked out by a medical expert. Your symptoms could be an early warning sign of something serious.

Ouch; sorry to hear, SA. Hope the surgery and rehab go well.

Thanks. Not fun. Still teach a few hours a week but not been able to run or play tennis for nearly 4 years now. Gotten back into table tennis lately. The lack of mobility is less of an issue. And it is much easier on my (bad) shoulder than tennis or badminton.

Also need surgery on my favorite shoulder but since I need both arms to compensate for the bad leg/hip, the hip replacement needs to happen before the left shoulder surgery. Thankfully, I'm pretty decent at most tasks with my right arm, but it's starting to hurt a lot because of overuse (as a substitute leg). Ironically, my good shoulder hurts quite a bit more than my defective left shoulder. No fun getting old and having the body falling apart.
