Time gaps between 1st and 2nd Slam titles

Of those players who are currently still on the tour, just 4 are multi-Slam winners. Of those 4, the time gap between their 1st and 2nd Slam titles is:

1. Federer = 6 months (2003 Wimbledon, 2004 Australian Open).
2. Hewitt = 10 months (2001 US Open, 2002 Wimbledon).
3. Nadal = 1 year (2005 French Open, 2006 French Open).
4. Djokovic = 3 years (2008 Australian Open, 2011 Australian Open).

I wonder who holds the record in the Open Era for both the shortest and longest time gaps?

Kafelnikov sure would have a shot at the longest gap. ;)

Edit: drat, no, his was a few months shorter than Djokovic's.

As far as the shortest goes, I remember reading somewhere than no-one ever won his second slamstraight after winning the first (couldn't vouch about this, though), so Federer would be hard to beat (of course, the gap between RG and US Open is shorter than between Wimbledon and AO, but I can't think of anyone who fits the bill...

That 3 year gap was definitely strange.

Granted Fed was still coming off his prime and Nadal was ramping up, but still.. you had no hint whatsoever that Djokavic was about to become a dominant player.

His breakout was surprising...... almost shocking.

safin had a gap of about 4 and half years b/w his slam wins @ USO 2000 and AO 2005 ...

Anyone who won the French Open and Wimbledon in one year.

The longest now...maybe Safin? Ashe? Connors?

yeah Safin was a long wait, good thinking.

I was under the impression no one has won the next slam after their maiden victory. So I'm thinking RG/US Open would be the shortest period, but can't imagine anyone winning these as their first 2.

Connors won the AO and then Wimbledon but this would have been around a 7 month gap, a bit longer than Federer's.

If Del potro can win another slam he is already ast 3 year...

EDIT. Silencer1 beat me to it

Sanchez Vicario had 5 year gap between her 1st and 2nd slams at the 89 and 94 French Opens, a 2nd slam which would have never come to her without the help from Graf and Sanchez Vicario crazed fanatic Gunther Parche.

Mary Pierce had a slightly longer than 5 year wait between her 1st and 2nd slams at the 95 French and 2000 French Open, then did not make her next slam finals until the 2005 French and 2005 U.S Opens (losing both).

Svetlana Kuznetsova also waited close to 5 years for her 2nd slam at the 2009 French Open, following her 2004 U.S Open triumph.

connors holds the record by winning AO and wimbledon in 1974 with a gap of 6 months and 5 days......fed won wimbledon and AO with a gap of 6 months and 24 days......

Sampras went from the 1990 US Open to 1993 Wimbledon, but Kuerten was longer as already mentioned.

Historically, I think it's Arthur Gore with 7 years, from 1901 Wimbledon to 1908 Wimbledon.

Jan Kodes 1970-1971 French Open.

Sam Smith 1971 US-72 Wimbledon

Nastase 72 US-73 French.

Shortest I know is Connors 74 Aussie to 74 WImbledon.

Vilas 77 FO thn to 77 US Open.

That's because of the timing of the slams on the schedule. Both won their 2nd slam 2 slams later.

I should have added Norman Brookes alongside Arthur Gore, as Brookes went from 1907 Wimbledon to 1914 Wimbledon.

As for the shortest, I think it's Budge Patty, who won the 1950 French Championships and 1950 Wimbledon.

In the meantime, Djoko continued winning big events: wtf, masters. He was also firmly anchored at #3. It's not like he ever stopped being a top player. But he started fiddling with his serve with worst consequences in 2010 (double digit dfs per match). I think it was always clear Djoko had the most potential after Fed and Nadal. Toni even talked about it in a few interviews. It's true though that nobody thought he could dominate to the extent that he did in 2011.

Shortest: Vilas (FO '77 - USO '77)
Longest: Safin (USO '00 - AO '05)

Thanks for that. So Vilas holds the shortest record at 3 months and Safin holds the longest record at 4 years, 4 months.

So it's already too late for Murray to beat Vilas' record for the quickest time while Del Potro can equal Safin's record for the longest time if he wins the 2013 AO!
:)

I think Del Potro has a great shot to set a new record for longest. He probably wont win a slam in 2013 at all, and probably even not in 2014, but could win a slam 2015 or beyond when Djokovic and Nadal are likely to really start to fade.

I always feel Del Potro and even Murray to some extent are still works in progress. The problem for Del Potro is his always suspect fitness. Has he ever gone a full season without some injury timeout since 2009?

Meanwhile, having just equalled Lendl's record for losing the most Slam finals prior to a win, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that Murray isn't now aiming to equal or top Safin's record! ;-)

I agree both are still works in progress. Del Potro's seems to be a very slow process ever since his injury though. He has a number or challenges in winning a major anytime soon:

1. Poor record vs the top players, very poor in fact.
2. Suspect fitness, getting tired even in best of 3 matches vs top players.
3. Injury prone, which is related to his lack of fitness and vice versa.
4. That he hasnt even been able to win a Masters title yet, which makes it hard to believe much in his chances of more slams.

That said I do think he will get another slam at some point, just might not be anytime soon, which is why he would have a good chance at this particular record.

It could be too late by then.
