Time to admit Sascha Zverev is the real thing

Yep, that's how I see it, Sascha has added another title to his collection and is consistently playing very good tennis. I don't know that he'll win the USO but I'd be willing to wager he'll have a slam win under his belt by the end of 2019. He is only 21 so there's tons of time for improvement from his current level. I think he's "growing up" pretty nicely, too. One has to have a certain amount of ego to be a champion but his so-called arrogance seems to be mellowing. He gave a very nice ceremony speech in D.C. I didn't see every match he played in the Citi tournament but when I did watch his shot making seemed not only well performed but well calculated. His serving was awesome. He still isn't a terribly exciting player to watch (for me) but he is definitely getting there. What do you guys think? I say he deserves respect!

lets wait until Toronto and US Open to see how he fares mentally.

Washington was kind of a walkover for him even though he played some fantastic tennis(i went 2 days) and I gotta give it to him he is very solid, and very fit regardless. alot of the other players seemed to struggle with the humidity ontop of the late nights

Sadly its true that he deserves respect and he has mine.

He needs a couple of melt-down losses after being up 2 sets a break a couple times in best-of-5 matches before he breaks through.

i thought it was "I can't get no satisfaction"
He said that too.
I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man
No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find
You get what you need
I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you might find
You get what you need
But I went down to the demonstration
To get your fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't we're gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse"
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you just might find
You get what you need
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
I said to him
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need
You get what you need, yeah, oh baby
I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need
You can't always get what you want

Jagger's a pimp. He never could've out-fought Zverev. But I didn't know until this day that it was Meles all along.

We can face the TV when Zverev wins the USO
We will face the TV for sure. But we won't be jealous of him for sure too. He has a life that is a thousand times better than mine-- afterall he makes a living doing something he loves to the core-- but I ain't jealous at all. Guys here at ttw just simply don't like him. There's no mystery there.

I guess there has been a number of guys who have loomed as the next big thing only to flop at the majors. Having said this his non slam record is better than most of these, but the next two years is the time for him to win a couple otherwise the pressure will swollow him up.

It is a tough situation for Zverev.

He wants the ranking points from Toronto but needs to keep himself fresh for the USO. Maybe skip Cincy if he goes deep there?

Well he is young and his body will recover fast in the one week gap between USO and Cincy. Don't see the need to skip any event really.
One problem I suspect here is that he might be peaking too early in DC and as a consequence he might suffer a drop in form by Cincy.

i would vote for that move since it makes more sense. The last thing he needs after this hell week here in DC is to jump right int Toronto+Cincy right before USO. I think he may have a deep run or a decent chance of defending points but we'll have to wait and see how the first round goes. Until then we can speculate all we want.

I need to see him play an in-form Djokovic at the Toronto Open. I'm very curious what his weaknesses are when he is playing well. Though he moves well, he's not a grinder, and may not have a plan B. I want to see what he does when he can't hit through a player like Djokovic (assuming he can't...not a safe assumption) the way he does most players. It's a match-up that might decide a lot in the next couple years.

Great thread! Would you consider changing your username to Sascha.the.Magnificient? As much as I love and respect the great Rafa, it's time to support the new generation!

Masters events dont make greats

The Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open do

Zverev at 21 = 3 Masters Titles
Federer at 21 = 1 Masters Title.
Murray at 21 = 2 Masters Titles

Nadal and Djokovic can better that but the thing is. Masters are the beginning. You really think he's never going to win Grand Slams in the next 10 years? Come on, this kid is making great progress already and yes, he's missing out on slam runs but that will come.

Best I've seen Zverev volley in a single tournament  The moments of uncomfortable transitioning and shaky volleys were kept at a minimum, compared to tournaments past. Hopefully he can keep this up and improve, I expect him to...

As far as winning majors are concerned, well, of course he'll get there eventually....

I'm not joining the hype train until he does something besides beat De minaur in a 500 no one showed up for, or tanked, or pulled out of. I'm not impressed. We all know he's the best of next gen. All he did was remind of us of something we already know in Washington.

Nothing less. Nothing more.

You're not alone in that position.

Who've you got succeeding the old guard, though?

Why do Zverev fans so desperately want people to love him?

I'm not a fan. I think he has the game to consistently win at levels below slams. I don't know that he has the mental fortitude to win at the highest level, or that he will ever develop it. I don't care for his demeanor. He has that Ivan Drago feel to him... and I don't think that'll get better if he starts winning slams.

If Federer were like Zverev, I'd be an enormous Nadal fan. I prefer Rocky to Drago.

Why am I required to love the Ziraffe?

Haha! I appreciate that, but I'll never budge from my position solidly behind Rafa, no matter what may come! I do agree it's time to shift interest more towards the youngsters, and I'm right there ready to take that plunge. :D

No requirement by me at all! Your opinion is as valid as anyone else's!

You're right but it's usually in a sarcastic, fun loving "Anyone but Zverev" vein so that's why I posted.
Really? Seems to be a lot of legit lack of respect for AZ. Nitpick over every little thing he says/does.

Many will never give him his due; even if he beat one of the Big 3 76 in the 5th at the USO.
