tiny draw, first round consolation?

this tournament im signed up for, only has 1 other doubles team signed up for my division.

and its a first round consolation tournament.

what does that mean? play the same team twice? thats no fun.

first round finals? LOL

do tournaments usually get cancelled for lack of players?

well, what usually happens is they will combine some draws. Say there aren't enough 4.0 doubles teams or enough 4.5 doubles teams, they will just stick whatever 4.0s they have in the 4.5 division.

(just substitute whatever the local rating that applies to you)

They will always run such an event as the higher rated designation. (you can't have 4.5s suddenly playing a 4.0 event but the reverse is fine)

This, by the way, is how I discovered I was still competitive at Open level when my age division was canned for lack of numbers and they stuck us in the 'Open' instead!

now theres only 2 other teams, registration is closed.

still a ridiculously tiny draw to actually play it.

wow draws are posted, its going to be a round robin with 3 teams....

That happens all the time in adult doubles draws. Keep playing them and get others into playing them and the draw size will increase. Get upset and lose interest and the draw sizes will continue to be small.

this is terrible.
it rained today, and the director got indoor courts, but he is having my doubles partner and i play back to back matches tomorrow starting at 9am, with an hour break in between. i called him and ask to see if he can reschedule; said no can do, sorry.

this is the last time i play any tournament from this director.

Well the TD got indoor courts- so time is pretty limited. He probably had to compress the schedule to fit everybody in. Back to back doubles matches with an hour break is not that physically taxing. Singles-maybe but not doubles.

Well I'm not any sort of seasoned veteran at adult tournaments around the country, but I've played a few locally and it's pretty common to be asked to play back to back matches with just an hour to rest between them in my experience. And that's even with no rain delays. I don't see what the problem is.

Umm, yeah that happens ALL the time. A lot of people who play tournaments do NOT want a spread out schedule because they want to play their matches and then get home and be with their family or relax on the weekend. Tournament directors have to balance a lot of different type of people and a lot of requests.

That's a bummer the tournament wasn't 100% perfect for you. Maybe you should put on your own tournament and make it just how you like it. See how easy it is.

I love to play tournaments a LOT. I just go for the competition and try to not let the external conditions worry me too much. If I want to I could find a way to complain about almost every tournament. Instead I just try to go have a good time. I love playing tournaments because I get to know a lot of interesting people in between matches and meet a lot of fun people to play against.

ok we just played the tournament.

the tournament director guarantees 2 matches, it was a 3-team round robin.

we played 1 match, and our next match withdrew. do you think i should ask for a partial refund due to only playing 1 match?

you complain a lot, don't you?

Have you ever played a tournament before? I have played rather a lot and this TD seems to have tried really hard in difficult circumstances to give you some matches at the level you like.

I would have probably, had it been me, just rolled you into the draw for the next level up. That's what normally happens.

ive played a few tournaments back when i worked at the shop. ive never had any issues playing tournaments before, i just felt this one was poorly run.

i mean they were about to postpone our match indefinitely, both I, my parter, and our opponents were fed up and just agreed to pay for our own indoor courts to play the match. (our match was postponed 3 times)

and then on top of that we had to call later to find out our next match withdrew, no notification at all from the TD and no update on the draws until a few hours later.

I think asking for a partial refund when you played less matches than was guaranteed is pretty reasonable.

wow. does a default really count as a 2nd match?

I wrote this:

I'm just emailing you to see if there is anything you can do about the short tournament I had. Despite the weather, I only played 1 match in 3.5 doubles, and probably the only reason i signed up for this tournament was for the 2 match guarantee. Aside from that we paid for our own courts at amy yee just to avoid anymore delay on the matches. I was hoping you would stand by your 2 match guarantee and maybe offer a partial refund on the entry fee for Trevor and I. If not a partial refund then possibly something else.

get this in response:
Thanks for playing. You guys won the 2nd match by default, so I did hold up my end on that. But they would like to play you when they are both back in the area if you guys are available. Not much I can do about your opponent getting sick.
