Tiriac, Santana admit to Madrid court problems

Code:
Madrid tournament owner Ion Tiriac admits that are problems with the blue clay courts in Madrid, not having to do with the color, but because they are too slippery. Tiriac told the press that the problem might relate to having to install new courts every year, as they are torn up after the event is over.

"We've had the same [guy] who has been working on the courts at Roland Garros for 12 years," Tiriac said. "We know that a new court is never good, even if we keep sweeping it, they have to play on it, Here in Madrid, we have to built and dismantle it each year. There's a reason that the court is what it is. We did not want to have so many bad bounces as before. What happens is that they have been pushing, pushing and pressing it to compress it, and have done it so much that it has become too hard."

Tournament director Manolo Santana added: "It's my fault. I just wanted that no players got hurt, like what happened in Monte Carlo, where there were two injured (Juan Monaco and Julien Benneteau). The sliding court is getting better day by day, but I'm disappointed. There has to be a better court."

Now lets stop all the "Nadal is too whiny" hate threads, and "Nadal always gives excuses" threads ... He conveyed a genuine problem with the courts (and when he was asked, not like he was going along broadcasting this). Djokovic today slipped at least four times. And like Nadal yesterday, he was not moving 10% of what he can do usually.

Tournament directors should not listen to wealthy owners but to real tennis players like Nadal. Then they will not be apologizing now.

The amount of fail cannot be described with mere words.

I hope Tiriac will actually THINK and ask the players before letting the money run his brain for him.

Unfortunately, judging by his comments for next year's tourney (phosphorous balls) that won't happen.

I don't blame Nadal and Djokovic if they choose to boycott this tourney in 2013.

I only wonder how Fed has managed to remain so calm and collected about this issue. I'm watching his match against Ferrer right now and he's already slipped a few times when trying to run around the backhand side to hit a forehand.

He is an establishment insider. Probably thinks that it is best not to speak against someone with that much money, keeping in mind the favors he can do for him in the future.

I agree with this post.

One thing which I admire in Federer. He knows he has a golden chance to become #2 if he wins, and he is clearly utilizing the effect blue clay had on the top-2. He knows he is the one to lose if he whines too, so trying his best to ignore the bad conditions and win this thing.

Self centered, yes. But using it fully to his advantage.

I didn't see Berdych having any problems with the blue clay as he destroyed Monfils 1 and 1 and crushed Verdasco today 1 and 2. Berdych for the title!!! :)

Best part about this is that Tiriac won't stop here.

He's going to improve on this circus act next year by opting for phosphorous tennis balls and goodness knows what else. Linesmen dressed as clowns perhaps? Maybe the umpire has to dress in a Halloween costume?

The players are like lab rats participating in the experiment of a very bored rich guy who just wants to see how much patience they have before they call him out on it.

Come on Tiriac. Don't give in to whining. Stick with your guns. Let this be a unique tournament. Keep it slippery and fast.

I don't feel sorry for Nadal or Djokovic in the least. I won't mind seeing AO changed to this Tiriac blue sand, which has turned out to be a masterpiece. While we're at it, since Wim is slow grass and the so called grass season is just a joke, USO and the US hc season should be changed to fast grass. I'm sure the slam spread will suddenly be held by many more players.

Furthermore, Madrid should henceforth be upgraded to the status of the 5th Slam. Actually, it should be upgraded now, in the middle of the tourny. Each year, there shall be two blue clay masters leading up the this slam event. thx

Fast yes. But if it is truly is more slippery than other clay surfaces, then it should be modified. Don't want to unnecessarily create potential for career ending injuries.
Having said that, I too love the blue for watching the matches on TV.

No that is not how it works. Do business owners in any area of business let their employees dictate how to run their business? The owners should listen to the opinions of the tennis players absolutely, but have the tennis players tell the owners how to run their business? 100% no.

I hate the look of the blue clay. That's from a spectators perspective which is why they used the blue clay. I think the blue clay looks terrible. I love the look of real red clay. Especially seeing it on TV. Also this is a run-up tournament to Roland Garros. The players are playing this with the expectation that the court will be the same or very similar to that at RG. Not playing on a completely different surface which is what that Blue Clay is.

Did Nadal ever slip and fell on blue clay? No.

But Nadal did fell on red clay.

Nadal should be complaining about the problematic red clay.
