Todd Martin: Djokovic more talented than Federer and Nadal

Federer and Nadal are the top two players in the world and have won 37 Grand Slam titles between them.

But Martin thinks Novak Djokovic is more technically gifted and he would go down as the greatest of all time if he had not been damned with injuries.

The Serbian added Grand Slam No 13 to his name at Wimbledon earlier this month, which put to bed a nightmare 12 months that included surgery on an elbow problem.

But before his recent issues, Djokovic won four major tournaments in a row to end the long-running dominance of Federer and Nadal.

Lol, when did Djokovic have any injuries?
He skipped one slam in his career and suddenly he had a lot of injuries? Look how many slams Nadal skipped in his career.

I was puzzled by this one too. Has Djokovic been affected by injuries more than most players? There seems to be a consensus that after FO 16 he was affected by motivation issues more than anything else. And in his (relatively) lean years of 2012-14 were there significant injuries?

Not sure what "talented" means anyway - seems to be a phrase that means whatever people want it to mean.

All in all he's actually the least punished by injuries. He had basically not a single serious injury in his twenties.

So yeah, no.

His gluten allergy in 2007-2010.

Perhaps Djokovic can be as good as Roger and Rafa on his peak but can never surpass the two when it comes to title wins and grand slam glory.

Interestingly they all had a down at 29y; Federer 2010 post AO, Nadal 2015, Djokovic 2016 post FO. Even Murray 2017.

Yeah i think his skills on hard court are more efficient ... but Fed on grass and Nadal on clay are superior. And of course it doesn't mean he's better than them.

I guess the point he is trying to make is that Novak's injuries in 2016 allowed Federer and Nadal to come back and add more Slams. Novak was quite dominant before suffering an elbow injury in late 2016.

Todd Martin looked about 50 twenty years ago, now he doesn't just look 70 but is talking like a senile 90 year old.

To all the people who have already made up their minds, why not?

It's not like we're talking about someone like Gaston Gaudio, it's Novak Djokovic and he's definitely one of the greatest ever from the baseline, has one of the greatest return games of all time and his only real weaknesses are his mentality in slam finals and his one dimensional play against elite players which occasionally leaves him there to be exploited.

Of course he didn't. You know nothing about tennis if you think Djokovic would do better against young Nadal than Federer did.

Considering Djokovic has beaten Nadal 27 times, I'd argue he'd do better.

Regarding Murray on clay as competition, I'd bet you Novak would have about 18 slams right now if he played Baghdatis, Gonzalez, hewitt, Cilic etc So it doesn't work like that bringing the competition card.

Baghdatis and Gonzalez played better in their AO finals than Murray did in any of his. You are judging only by names and I bet you don't care about the game itself.

Woulda coulda shoulda doesn’t matter. Safin might have 21 slam titles right now had he taken care of himself and not chased skirts all night. Safin had sick talent. Nick Kyrgios has insane talent. But he isn’t serious enough about the sport. Besides, injuries are part of the sport. If you a grinding style of tennis, then you will get injured.

Woulda coulda shoulda is for the birds.
