Todd Martin: Djokovic more talented than Federer and Nadal

Federer and Nadal are the top two players in the world and have won 37 Grand Slam titles between them.

But Martin thinks Novak Djokovic is more technically gifted and he would go down as the greatest of all time if he had not been damned with injuries.

The Serbian added Grand Slam No 13 to his name at Wimbledon earlier this month, which put to bed a nightmare 12 months that included surgery on an elbow problem.

But before his recent issues, Djokovic won four major tournaments in a row to end the long-running dominance of Federer and Nadal.

Thoughts?
Lol, when did Djokovic have any injuries?
He skipped one slam in his career and suddenly he had a lot of injuries? Look how many slams Nadal skipped in his career.
Has Djokovic been more injured than Fed & Rafa?
I was puzzled by this one too. Has Djokovic been affected by injuries more than most players? There seems to be a consensus that after FO 16 he was affected by motivation issues more than anything else. And in his (relatively) lean years of 2012-14 were there significant injuries?

Not sure what "talented" means anyway - seems to be a phrase that means whatever people want it to mean.
All in all he's actually the least punished by injuries. He had basically not a single serious injury in his twenties.

So yeah, no.
Tood Martin chose the wrong words. Djokovic's career did not limit the injury (except the right elbow he underwent surgery this year), but the fitness that Djoker had bad.
He was retired much matches to 2010 his poor fitness did not allow these challenging duels to stand. Until the gluten-free diet that Djokovic started on Dr. Četojević's adherence allowed him to fully develop his potential.

How do we define talent?

The most succesful? Then the most talented is Novak.
The most versatile? Then the most talented is Novak (Triple Career Grand Slam).
The most precocious? Then the most talented is Nadal out of the Big 3.
The most effortless? Then the most talented is definetely not Federer, as despite his efforts, he has the less Slams out of the 3 and a losing H2H vs. Djokovic and Nadal (even when he was young and healthy, Federer has a losing H2H against Nadal in 2004-2007 and 2004-2009, including many important matches outside clay).

In Roger's defense, though, it's impressive he managed to win 20 Slams with a one-handed backhand. But the thesis that he'd have won more Slams had he used a two-handed backhand is untestable, and thus irrelevant.

If he was more talented then he would not have struggled so much between 07-14.

He benefitted from the lack of any youngsters rising in the decade 2014-2023, the 1990s generation were in their 20s in this decade and they were all less talented losers, thats why Novak could get a second win on natural surfaces after turning 27, especially in his 30s when he was not in his prime.

Talentwise Federer was most talented in terms of strokeplay, Nadal was the most talented in terms of athleticism, Novak benefitted from the age advantage over Federer.

Any celebrity who thinks Djokovic is more talented in gameplay than Federer/Nadal is an idiot/biased/both because the definition of talent is to shine early. You cannot struggle at math in school, then in university and later take master it with a lot of effort spanning years and years to claim that hey bro I was always talented at numbers... ehh no, it does not work that way.

Same for tennis, Novak had like 1 slam months before turning 24, on his 27th birthday he had what? 6 slams ? ... that is now how talent works.

He has poor volleys, his forehand is not goaty, his game was very flawed in his early years by his own admission. That is not the definition of a natural talent.

Novak's ability/talent is his MIND.

He is mentally focussed and zoned in in ways others are not, that and his flexibility + changing directions + stamina are also extreme talents .... this mixed with the age gap he had over Federer + some weak 1990s gen later on enabled him to surpasss Federer and Nadal.

This is how god designed it in his favor, fair enough but lets not call him the most talented tenniswise.

reaching uso final at just twenty years of age i think its a sign of a talent

Who cares if he reached USO Final in a weak field ? I really dont care whether some reached the final to lose or lost in 4th round, for me you either won the tourney or lost the tourney, I don't see anything in between. Even Nadal reached wimbledon final at 20 navigating a weak draw in 2006, am I supposed to call him a great talent on grass above Roger or Peter who never reached a final or even semis at on grass at 20 ???

Do you know how many people have beaten Novak at the USO ? Roger, Rafael, Andrew, Danieel, Stanislas, Kei etc etc ... Jeez ... I guess the entire locker room has beaten him there and you are counting his finals ? ONLY TITLES MATTER :) Defeats don't, either you climbed mount everest or you failed, there is no argument that hey I climbed 90%.. hey I climbed 50% ... he I could only climb 10%... nope... nobody cares, either you climbed, or you did not.... we dont need excuses
