Anyways, congrats to Zverev. He raised his level here while Djokovic just fell apart and couldn't fight back. You can't win them all.

CYGS is the main thing. The best thing you can take from this is Nole now comes back down to earth and can reset and refocus.

I said and was ridiculed for saying that he was creating too many side goals for his own good. I think he had the mixed doubles match happening just after this one in the back of his mind once he broke in the second.

Can't imagine the disappointment of losing this and playing the mixed doubles match without properly being able to accept this loss.

Yup, he can still take gold though. But I agree it must be hard to step out on court right after what happened here.

Congrats to Sascha, well deserved win. Novak's still the GOAT, but it's been all about Zverev today. He honestly has the best 6'6 defense ever and combined with good serving day is doing some massive damage.
Novak was pushing the ball to the middle of the court waiting for mistakes. It worked for a set and a game, then Zverev adopted. Any decent player would exploited Novak passivity. It was the same yesterday.
I really hope that you didn't watch the match.

Z isn't 6'11.

Congratulations to Zverev... I am sad for Novak, but for me as a tennis fan, who the f... cares, lol...

This loss can be good in two ways... Novak is reminded he is not unbeatable and that he can't pull away every match from being down... Secondly, he will try to win in three years so we won't see his retirement even if he win goat race... :sneaky:

Hopefully it’ll be a fine vintage, free of Belgrade Actor nonsense like MTOs and imaginjuries with a classic scoreline like 7-6 5-7 1-6.
Wrong score, wrong way, wrong everything. I think it’s safe to say Novak still has Zod covered level-wise. Zod played a good enough level to close it out but Novak just collapsed.

Hatchetjob gold incoming folks. The regional manager is gonna need a new inbox.

Frustrating loss to Djoker fans. Nole unexpectedly dropped out of the game rhythm after winning a break in the 2nd set and could not return to it back. Zverev somehow can keep Nole in subpar mode. :(

Peaked too soon. I wondered if he would be able to sustain the level he played the first set. Zverev is no Nishikori. Younger, fitter, stronger and quite determined, he was not going to implode after that. Djokovic was not prepared to play the 3rd at all.

Not going to lie, I didn't like his attitude towards the end. Excessive SnV when he is near a loss is usually a bad sign, and to do it at the Olympics he wanted to win badly... I don't know. Ugly ending. Credit to Zverev on taking the opportunity that was presented.

Hopefully this won't leave any long term effects on Djokovic as US Open awaits, with something more than just a Slam on the line...

Might be something physical. He didn't chase balls in one of the Zverev service game after getting two breaks down

Should not have tried mixed doubles, not with this kind of humidity at least.

Also a lot of errors from Sasha in the first.
Becker's critiques must have fueled him well :)

He had Zverev well knocked down. I can't blame this kind of loss on doubles participation, especially since they don't take much time and energy anyway.

In this humidity, he should have rested after every match. Djokovic, Nadal and Federer are well in their 30s, their recovery is not the same as it used to be. Matches for consecutive days are a big problem in these conditions, and he decides to play doubles also. It might not have made a difference if Zverev let up, but the german kept fighting and Djokovic just couldn't sustain his level of play.

Zverev should really aim for his first top 10 win in a GS this USO.
