A then completely unknown Berdych knocking out Roger Federer at the 2004 Olympics in the 2R has to be my career highlight. Fed was of course the absolute favourite for the gold medal but there came Berdych. It was his first top 10 win and stopped Fed from accomplishing something huge.

What’s your Berdych career highlight?

His quarter final defeat to Nadal at the AO 2012 is the best I have seen of him, it was a great match.

Berdych with Simon's brain would have been a monster. I've always liked his game a lot. Especially the version that came to the net.

Berdych pushed untouchable 2015 Novak in MC and Paris, but the Berdych brain faltered in key moments.

Beating Djokovic and Federer back to back in Wimbledon is not for everybody, no?

His peak level was scary, just didn't bring it often enough. Really knew how to play Federer and Murray in 2009-2013, could score the rare upset vs Djokovic or Nadal and consider that that could easily be the toughest 5-year period in ATP history. Beat every member of the big 4 in a Slam - Fed twice, bageled Nadal at the AO.

Overall very underrated due to his h2h records vs Nadal and Djokovic.

Also pretty enjoyable to watch when he was in form, he hit a very clean ball.

Just in jest man, Berdy had a good career - 13 career titles seems quite low for a player like him, he had some big wins in his career. Sad that he's not retiring on his own terms.

Maybe his best tennis is not enough anyomore. He used to be maybe the biggest hitter in the early 10s. Now there's Zverev, Tsitsipas, Thiem, Berrettini, Khachanov...

Or maybe he lost motivation after a good career and tons of money.

It's so sad when you see a career just sputter out like that, especially from so big and regular a name in the game for so long. Hope he has a happy retirement with that wife of his.

Highlights would undoubtedly be the summer of 2010. That career best run to the Roland Garros semis ending in that epic, among the best of the decade clashes with Soderling, and then the run to the Wimbledon final knocking off two of the big three back to back, including ending Federer's run of consecutive Wimbledon finals.

Honourable mention to when he wound up Rafa and all of Madrid alllllllll the way back in 2005.

I would not even put him in the 10 best players to never win a slam honestly. From his era alone I would put Davydenko and Nalbandian ahead for sure, and possibly Tsonga and/or Ferrer too. In history Miloslav Mecir, Todd Martin, Alex Corretja, Marcelo Rios, and probably Tommy Haas would be higher just off the top of my head.

Eh.

Haas: never made a slam final and never made more than one slam SF in a single year (only made 4 in his whole career).
Davydenko: also never made a slam final, won more titles but never beat any of the big 3 at a slam.
Nalbandian: less titles than Berdych, almost less than HALF the career wins of Berdych too.
Rios: May have gotten to #1 but never made a SF outside of RG. Also almost less than half the career wins of Berdych.
Corretja: also never made a slam SF anywhere but RG (never went past the 2R at Wimbledon and 3R of the AO!!!)

Tsonga and Ferrer are definitely up there and I don't have time to discuss the rest but Berdych is definitely "at least" top 10 best players to never win a slam. His longevity alone is impressive. Slam QF's ranging from 2007-2018. Slam SF's from 2010-2017. First title in 2004, last in 2016.

I've come to appreciate Berdych more after witnessing the Next Gen and he was going up against much stronger versions of the Big 3 in the first half of 2010s.
