Tomas Machac sensationally retires after coughing a small lead in the United Cup - costs his country a Finals spot

This was absolutely bizarre for those watching.

For context.

In the United Cup, team USA v Czechia in the SF for a Final spot. Coco Gauff had already given USA a 1-0 lead over Czechia by beating Muchova.

So then it's Fritz v Machac to level the tie.

Machac starts strong, takes the first set and leads 5-2 second set and then has 2 match points. Doesn't convert and then gets broken twice to then give Fritz the 6-5 lead. Machac gets angry at his box, smashes his racket and abuses team Czechia, plays one more point and then just quits out of nowhere. Commentators were stunned, everyone was stunned. He just handed victory to USA. He was still up a set on Fritz. Only needed a game and the tiebreak to win the match.

He never sought treatment, never got a MTO, didn't appear injured to most people on the ground, did absolutely nothing to seek help for whatever ailment he may have.

Woodbridge and other commentators were shocked saying he let his anger get the better of him and cost his country a chance at the final.

Machac has a bright future but that was insane.

Taylor Fritz said that Machac told him at the net he was cramping.

Fritz said he didn't notice any form of cramping or any issues through the match.

Machac never sought any treatment, no MTO, no pickle juice nothing. Just quit the match. He did also abuse his box and throw rackets after coughing the lead and two match points and then seemed to develop cramps which instead of trying to work through.... he killed Czechia's chances of making the final.

Machac is on the entry list for Adelaide next week.

There are just some people who are more unhappy with being close then falling short than not having a chance at all. So when being made imperfect they would rather opt out and not face the imperfect situation anymore.

I can empathize, not to say I condone his behavior

Tennis players are usually poorly raised, in a bubble, often not with much social interaction.
So you can't expect them to be mature or make the right decisions o_O
They aren't really suited to team environments... and probably don't understand loyalty or duty.

That’s just not not true lol because these things don’t happen often. I mean unless you can tell me an example where an individual has cost their country a spot in the final of the United Cup or ATP Cup or Fed Cup or Davis Cup or Hopman Cup in the last 30+ years?

Many are often raised in a team whether it be your family or your coaching or your country if it’s a nation like Australia or France or USA.

You don’t quit because you lost 4 games in a row lol.

Well when i play tennis i feel a bit immature because i'm badly behaved on the court and my coach's wife said she will ban me from the club for wearing the wrong thing always, but i'm good and classy away from tennis :giggle:

Never heard of the “United Cup.” Players complain about playing too much. Get rid of all the Cups. Start with the Davis.

I respect all people to make their own choices on things. I also respect the rights of people to criticize others if that is what they choose to do.

I just respect everyone at all times. But I respect the rights of others not to respect everyone at all times and to have a different opinion on what it is to respect others, which I also respect

Combined they have retired a lot.
Nadal did a lot of retirements, but it was through injury where he literally ground himself into the dust and realised his physical level wasn’t to a satisfactory standard that he could compete. But he has also occasionally completed matches with serious injuries.

I don’t think Djokovic has had many match retirements that are questionable.

Even if he has Novak never did anything mid-match like what Machac did here. Machac literally retired out of frustration / mental midgetry. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I’m half wondering whether there is something weird going on with the Czech coach captain. If you rewatch the match he seemed agitated even right from the start of the match and was getting aggressive with court staff and cameramen, but it will still not fully explain what Machac did.

Federer has withdrawn before matches have started but I don’t think he has ever retired from a match. That includes matches where he has literally had one functioning knee, torn ligaments and still insisted on playing out the match. To me that’s dangerous but Federer refused to compromise.

Lol big deal. Nobody cares about United Cup. How can you be United if Russia or Belarus can't participate?

And about the retirement? Much ado about nothing. Other players retired too yesterday. Sh*t happens. Shang retired with fever - his father also suffered the same illness. Dimitrov retired with hip problem.

Play a full tennis tournament and feel it for yourself.

No more bizarre than Osaka retiring after getting the first set 6-4, and gifted the Auckland title to Clara Tauson.
