Tomic and his tanking strategy

Bernard Tomic, who has repeatedly been accused of tanking matches, says that appearing not to be interested is sometimes part of his strategy.

Tomic came from a set down to defeat Fernando Verdasco at Queen's Club on Thursday, and then defended himself against renewed criticism of his commitment to the game.

"[T]hey accuse me of tanking,” he said in his press conference. “Sometimes, you know, that's the way I sort of come back into the match. You know, I sort of seem like I'm not there and stuff, but really I am there ... So sometimes I think people misunderstand me. Sometimes I use being down in a match, as opposed to being ready and on your feet—sometimes I like to change it and do it my way.

"And sometimes it looks [like] I'm not trying. But really, I'm competing mentally for every point."

Tomic caused controversy bynot attempting to properly return a match pointin the first round of the Masters tournament in Rome in May.

He said at Queen's Club that his return is not his best shot, which affects his strategy when he’s down in a return game.

"I'm really good at winning matches from behind," he said, pointing to his come-from-behind victory over Verdasco. "But, you know, that's something I'm working on. And [what] got me through today was I competed for every point."

However, the 23-year-old did acknowledge that he’s had problems concentrating in matches, saying that the presence of Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has helped him.

"When he's there it gives me that fire to focus in those first few points," said Tomic. "Having Lleyton here on the side, it encourages me so much to compete every point. And that's one of my biggest problems in the past, is maintaining that concentration and fighting for every point."

Tomic defeated Gilles Muller, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2, on Friday to reach the Aegon Championships semifinals.

Are nick and him really friends?
I remember Tankic ratting Nick out to Hewitt right next to microphones and stuff saying ' no he's in Canberra right now chilling, he ain't injured. TWICE he's done it now'
Or something like that. Are they really friends? What kind of friend rats you out?

I'd love to see how him and Kyrgios would fare as a doubles partnership.

I saw them play doubles together once. At the 2014 USO out on ct 8 and there was a good crowd and great atmosphere. A lot of smiles on both sides of the court. They lost a tight match to Granollers and another guy whose name I don't remember.

I think I am more disturbed by the fact that his psycho dad is back on the scene! I saw him sitting next to JMac at Queens today for Bernie's semi-final.

I thought this guy was banned from attending ATP matches but, unfortunately, I guess it was only temporary!

Couldn't even force myself to finish reading his quotes because he's an irrelevant tanker. He's basically like the ATP's version of a wrestling jobber. Comes out, collects his loss, slumps on along to the back.

Why doesn't he simply tell his dad to **** off and not attend his matches anymore?
Clearly his dad is a horrible influence, such a negative attitude.

"Bernie, this pretending to "not try" and tanking strategy is working great...... now just take your racquet and hold it the wrong way and your all done"

I think what he's referring to is some of his matches where he pisses away a set or a few games just to start fresh, one example of this was his SF against Dolgopolov in Acapulco. He got breadsticked I think and looked finished and uninterested as he does, he ended up fighting back hard in the 2nd set and the 3rd set and surprisingly won the match, much to the surprise of the commentators. Obviously he's still a dumb tanker A LOT of the time, such as the racquet being held the wrong way. But there is times when he looks disinterested but does fight back.

Oh yes cause suffering an entire lifetimes worth of emotional, physical and mental abuse makes it so easy to just distance yourself from your own father. As if it's not hard enough to cut your dad out of your life, throw on top of that the fact that that man has pretty much been in control of Bernard's career plus all the years of abuse he's suffered. John's left Bernard in a constant petulant attitude with the years of damage, he needs help in cutting John away. It's not just easy to distance yourself from your own father
