Tomorrow Robin Söderlings future will be declared

RF-18

He has called for a pressconference that will be held tomorrow. Its expected that he will either say he is making a comeback or that he is retiring.

What do you guys think happens? Retire or continue?

Im sad to say it, but I thinks his days are over. The great swede who is the only player to butcher nadal in FO is retiring.

if you're coming back you just practice and play. If you're announcing a press conference it means you're finished.

sadly I think you are right, such a shame would have had a GS title by now imo

I know. 2 GS finals and still didn't make it, sad when you come to think of it.
He will always be remembered as the man who beat Nadal at RG or the man who made Fed the GOAT.

It will be a retirement announcement, sadly.

But he will go down in the history books as the only man ever to defeat Nadal at the FO.

And I do not say that prematurely.

These announced pressers always lead to retirements. It's not as if Nadal or Federer have been out of action for a couple of years. It's a guy whose only claim to fame is beating Nadal at RG.

Do you know that Robin started his own Business with tennisballs?

He has his own brand and i was on the ISPO Fair in Germany at his both.

The gave me one can of his new brand and one can of protoype balls. I tested the prototype balls last week and they played very well.

Here is the adress of the Website: http://www.rs-tennis.com/

Gutted really...he was a top 5 caliber player. The tour has missed him the last couple of years.

According to you, what aspect of his game would have given him a top 5 standing?

Serve and forehand combination, he did finish 5 in 2010. Admittedly not the strongest year. I think in an era with Ferrer consistantly occupying a top 4-5 spot Soderling was certainly top 5 material.

Strokewise? Maybe only the forehand, backhand and serve. But as far as caliber of his game is concerned, he is one of the only top guys who challenged those ranked above him consistently. The self belief he showed is what set him apart from nearly every other top tennis player outside the big 4. So he definitely earned is world number 5 standing.

It was a loss for the sport, but personally I can't really feel sorry for him since it's pretty clear he got mono from overusing EPO.

Either that or a doping ban. Hopefully Wawrinka isn't awaiting the same faith.

silent ban?

I'm not sure about the need for a press conference. When you haven't been seen for 3 years most people think you're retired anyway.

Seems like retirement. If he was simply announcing his comeback he'd not gather media together...he's tried several times to comeback and failed, so I think he'd simply sign up for the next tourney and do his best, he doesn't seem like the showy type.

It's a bummer, he was in the Berdych/Ferrer mold of guys who started playing great tennis in their late 20s after otherwise immemorable careers, difference being that Robin's peak was cut suddenly short. No way to end a career, but that's the body for ya :(

He's got fans all of the world, especially in Sweden. He deserves a brief moment to thank them and say goodbye properly.

Enough people are interested to know what he plans to do hence the various threads and frequent questions asked on here about him and his future plans.

The fact that he is calling a formal press conference is ominous but not surprising. Players almost always do this when they formally announce their retirement. He has not played now in almost 3 years and nothing he has ever said in that time has given us any encouragement that he will eventually take up his racquet again.

All the same, it will be sad to hear him finally make it official!

Yep, really sad. Helluva talent when he was on.

Robin had more ability than either Ferrer or Berdych...

Shame.

He was a light bearer for Men's tennis in Sweden after Magnus Norman's French Open heroics in 2000 and the legacy Edberg and Wilander left.

I hope Swedish tennis as a whole improves...I suppose it goes back into the class spectrum...only rich, affluent or well to do people can afford to play tennis...people need to change that perception as tennis is the best sport hands down right now.

Yeah, everyone who beats Nadal was doping, but the indefatigable bull, who whips forehand after forehand at 80 trillion RPM and runs down every ball all match long...is clean.

Sounds believable.

First of all, it's fate.

Second of all, you're talking out of your ***.

As someone has previously mentioned , i heard the press conference was mainly about the new brand of ball he hes developed ..maybe a link with a tournament or something of this nature.. no doubt playing career will be discussed as well.. hope its not bad news , he was enjoyable to watch

You're just a bit agitated because that's also where Rogie's mono came from

Nadal is obviously doping as well, of course.

link ? ..................

I posted this way before the presser.

This is a weird situation.
As if something doesnt allow him to say "yeah I'm retiring"
Or he's not willing to, which could be understood as "I got banned for using, they didnt make it public so now I'm scre wing with them a little bit"

I doubt it. Soderling is not a guy that the ATP and ITF would go out of their way to protect. They would throw him under the bus just like they did Mariano Puerta. Soderling is a bit like Mardy Fish, doesn't want to impose a deadline on himself but probably realizes he has no chance in hell of coming back now.
