The match against Djokovic was a moral victory. He was very competitive in the first set, we were closer. Djokovic is unreachable at the moment. If he keeps going this way, it will be difficult to stop him.

It's actually true. No one can beat Nole right now so why shouldn't Rafa take solace in progress being made?

Why does Toni bother to say something that goes without saying? The match was a moral victory for RAFA before he walked on court, but RAFA is morally unbeaten because when he deploys his forehand DTL he has never lost a point.

I agree with Toni on this one. He did well at IW and prob has a lot of confidence going into the clay season now. He'll be tough on the dirt.

IMHO progress will be made when Rafa takes a set OR when he gets more competitive as the match progresses (i.e. Taking Djoko to the limit in last set instead of surrendering halfway through it).
But good that Toni feels positive about it. Rafa can use any bit of extra confidence he can get.

I rather find these comments silly. There is no morol victories in sports. There is no such a thing of deserve to win as well. You either win it or lose it.

Because Nadal used to be able to actually beat Djokovic and was leading their h2h but for the past two years he hasn't been able to take a set off of Djokovic. It's not that Djokovic has gotten so much better (although he has improved his serve), it's that Nadal has gotten a lot worse.

There are no moral victories. That's silly. You either win or lose. Being close or closer means nothing to the bottom line. Nadal has to beat Djokovic or it means nothing as he's no further ahead than all of the other clowns who can't beat Djokovic.

At which point it will probably be younger players who will take advantage.

Eventually yes.

But I think Noles current level is so high that it's gotta be somewhat ephemeral.
Somebody will have tiny window of opportunity pretty soon I think.

But although he's made improvements on his serve, how is his level so much better in 2015/6 than it was in 2011? It's more a case of the other players who used to compete well against him at the slams have declined. It's been two years since Nadal has defeated him, that's a long time and has been ample time for Nadal to have figured out a solution. He obviously doesn't have much of one.

The mental toughness is better as well, but your point is solid.

Yeah but he was injured and declined.

yeah, it's a combination of things. Both Murray and Nadal declined with injury in 2014.
He needs to regain form first before he attempts to solve ultron.

It's one year 3 month since his 7 month injury break. This is amazing recovery actually.

OH by the way, Nadal may not be the one who can crack ultron this year. :D

I agree with Uncle Toni. He had that belief for the first set and 2-2 in the 2nd. Djokovic just clamped down.
A Phallic Victory.
Clay season might be strong. But I do think the US Open is the one to watch for Nadal making a deep run...

Well, I guess Toni will agree that Murray scored a moral victory over Djokovic in the AO final. After all, he was competitive with him in the 3rd set! ;)

Does that mean RG 2015 was also a moral victory? Rafa was level at 5-5 in the first set in the QF match (came from 0-4 down) - that was close.

No. Sometimes you play better but too unlucky or suffer bad decisions from judges/refree. You deverse to win actually.

Progress comes from performing better and making improvements. That's what progress is. Rafa performed better and made improvements.

The result was the same but it was objectively better for moral than a worse performance would have been. He definitely made progress as he definitely played better than he had the last several times they have met.
